The unibody car/truck Ute with an integral bed did originate in Australia in the 1930s and was eventually brought to America in 1957 with the Ford Ranchero based on the Ford Courier 2-door station wagon. Chevy followed with the El Camino in 1959..

Actually it was a local Ford dealer from Melbourne that had the idea & put it to Ford Australia.. They built the first one.. but it is a wholly Australian idea.. they wanted acar that could carry stock to the auctions but also take the family to church on the weekends.
