Most people seem to forget it these days, but there is just as much if not more risk now than in the 80s that big American, European, and Russian cities will be hit with nuclear bombs, due to the rise of international terrorism and "lost" Soviet warheads during the 1990-1996 time of troubles. I'm glad my family in America lives in only medium-sized cities with no military targets.

These days, Israel's usefulness to the US has waned, because of the huge military installations President Bush built in Iraqi territory. For the 1 1/2 years, President Obama has been essentially saying this to Israel: You better shape up and support our every move, allow American businesses to take over your government monopolies, or else we will cut all support and I will make speeches to the world supporting Palestinian terrorists' aims.

Today, there still is a strong Israel lobby, but its words have less force than before.

As for propaganda, since the 1990s everything has changed. The main focus these days of most Palestinian/Arab nationalist groups has been in the media, doing things like filming "corpses" and saying "the IDF did this." They are succeeding, since it's easier to sympathize with those who don't hold military power in a country. On CNN, BBC, even RT, Israel now has a bad reputation.

The bottom line is that the nuclear genie is out of the bottle and will never be stuffed back in. More countries will develop nuke weapons in the future: Japan, South Korea, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Iran, Eqypt, Ukraine, & Indonesia all jump to mind. So, the USA needs to retain at least 1500 warheads, permanently, and to maintain a nuclear triad: submarine, ICBM, & bomber-deployed weapons. And, Russia needs to continue its TOPOL-M enhancements, too. This is reality: a Balance of Terror.

Like many folks in the US, I have mixed feelings about Israel: Admiration for its accomplishments & the quality of many individuals in medicine, science, the arts, business, etc., combined with concern that they will eventually drag the US down into World War III, when they fight Iran, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Hezbollah, & Saudi in the future. I recognize the terrorist threat that you enunciated, or the fact that the Pakistani government could end up falling to the Taliban, who would then control the Pakistani nuke arsenal. But, you cannot assure us that Tel Aviv would never use its vast nuke arsenal, if it felt existentially threatened. The IDF has the nukes, the delivery systems, & the skill to use them. If the current Mideast tensions continue, who knows what will happen?
