There is a very wide spectrum of harmonics within the sound - not just the fundamental pitches, but the associated harmonics heard on individul voices, which mkes it an incredibly rich, warm and satisfying sound. It is ful of soul.
I really want to move on to 3:46 out of curiosity, my cursors is already on 3:46 but my fingers just won't click it! it's too beautiful to skip any seconds
Des voix uniques, une perfection et une solemnité qui nous plongent au plus profond de la foi orthodoxe.Pavel Grigorievich Chesnokov était vraiment un compositeur de génie.
@hatstalker I know, the bass voice is supreme and very sought in choirs. But, I'm still not a basso profondo, but i have a strong low voice. For now only a bass.
Pasiukov was fantastic. I was in St. Petersburg this summer, and despite of the heat, the St. Petersburg male choir held concerts at the Peter and Paul fortress twice a week. If I remember correctly they will continue doing so until September 24th. Miller was absent, he was at Valaam. The bass profundo part was sung by Kochetov, a very good singer, but not really of Miller's brilliance. I talked to the conductor, Afansayev, and he spoke highly of Pasiukovs unique ability as a basso profundo.
@KjeXXXer I really don't know. I speak Russian quite well, so I spoke with the director, Afanasyev, in Russian. Didn't speak with any of the choir members. I suspect they don't speak very much English.
@uglymoon78 Ah. I guess there's no way out of taking that Russian class I've been thinking about. I think Miller speaks a little english though, judging by what he's written on youtube (unless he uses google translate, haha)
@KjeXXXer Yes, I guess Miller speaks some English, and even better German, as far as I know. Maybe Kochetov speaks English, try to speak to him after a concert, if he doesn't disappear backstage right away. Such a short and rather small man physically, with such a thunderous voice! Miller is a big bear of a man. But having av bass voice isn't always related to being tall or short, of course.
@uglymoon78 I guess I'll have to try if I ever see any of these guys live.. Do you know how old Kochetov is? He has a great voice from what I've seen on the Profundo trio videos.
Why isn't Miller at the first scenes of the video?? The final song is called Vechnaya Pamyat(Eternal Memory) I have the same one with Miller sing a low G1 then passing to sing Vechnaya Pamyat. Oh and Pasuikov, dark and powerfull such nice work, and tenor is awsome!! Where did you get this video EricAmada?
@1donpizarro Yep, I checked the name in a russian page, I found some cd's there and listened to them and it was clearly Timonin. I can recognize his voice anywhere
All - I just got the CD of the full version of this piece - go to Musica Rusica, do a search for "Afanasiev" and you will find 4 CDs (I got all 4), this one is "Funeral Service." A LOT of Pasiukov chanting, quite a bit of the counter tenor (Vasily Timonin) who has such a great ringing quality to his voice - YouTube sound quality being just enough to make you want more...these titles may be available from sellers on Amazon also...now also question the date on this clip, anytime between '97-'04...
Yeah when I first discovered all this I went on a mad search online and all I could find on him was post from Miller on Classica Russica giving a brief timeline of his (Pasiukov's) career...so if my math is right, he'd be in his early 50's now...
Besides, this clip, the first part in the church anyway, is from '97 or '98, he would have had to be in his 60's here in order to be in his 70's now...definitely does not look that old to me!
There may not even be a lower voice. If you search YouTube under the more Russified spelling -- Pasyukov -- you'll find at least two videos in which he offers up big, lovely, G1s that are as dark as the midnight sky.
i addicted to this post nearly 1 and half years. and always return to hear to hear this wonderful music. how beautiful! and the direction. has no air, and accurate, polite, just love it. thank you for posting. i can say this vidio is the most precise trasure i ;ve found in youtube ever.
I mean this in the most complimentary way possible, btw. I just realized that that comment could've possibly been taken negatively. Such was not my intention, Bass-homeboy made the happy parts of my brain vibrate.
Such beautiful, beautiful music. The choir, direction (so sensitively and powerfully done) soloists, and the way the singing goes with the images, esp. when it zeros in on the painting of God's face, when one would think He is singing/speaking. And then the Christ. I am blessed, so blessed with this music, this video.
@Greatheil , brilliant, I was sure it was in both ears when I first found this but had resigned myself to thinking perhaps not - you're right, it works.
at 3:34 he sang a very low not (maybe A1) and without moving face, showing that's not a hard note!. I can sing it only in the morning just after waking up. My lowest note in the rest of day is C2, I'm Jalous! lol
The Western side of the world misses out on such a wide range of music written for the Basso Profundo. It's fascinating, really. I thank God every day for my range. I can hit the Bb below a C2, but I have to fry below that, unfortunately. On a early morning with a terrible cold though my range opens to ridiculous extremes, with the cost of obliteration of my middles and highs.
Vladimir Pasuikov is in my opinion the most impressive choral basso profondo I´ve ever heard. That 100% modal low A1 was just amazing...and his massive lion-like voice is very pleasant.
It reminds me of church when I was a boy. We had a choir of all the older ladies and gentlemen who would sing in the choir above everyone. I haven't been a practicing church goer in a while so this brought back some good memories. Not enough to make me sit through a 3 hour service (1/2 russian/english) anytime soon but enough to make me atleast sit down and appreciate my heritage
im 20 and with strohbass and some vocal fry i can clearly project a c2 but that d2 isnt so clear. then e and f are good. am i full a bass or will i be a full bass some day? i can hit the c above middle in my high range. I love pasuikov
When I was 20, 30+ yrs ago, I had only a D, but by 23 I had a B. Lower is coming. With care, not pushing, you can stretch it, relaxed is best, tension takes away from it. Around age 30, maturation of bass voice adds fullness, and continues to drop. I now usually have a G you can hear dozens of rows out, no amp, though no lit for it.Try not to overfry; unless you do only russian profundo, you need highs, and too much frying hurts them, and if you want paid, better have those too. Ignore idjits.
I only found out thru this YouTube video and then going to the vid poster's site and followed the links.
You know, they started low key but man they really brought it! And the main men here (the tenor as well as the ultra bass here) were NOT there. But they had this tall ultra-bass and another pretty good bass and a couple tenors and others that were tremendous.
A few of the people in this video here (including the conductor) were the same, others new.
do they have cds or something???I really want to listen more of their music!! it is simply genious!the peace and harmony guided me throughout the entire melody!! now i can finally sleep with their music in my mind..:X:X
What a shame they could not have come to Pittsburgh. We have a large Russian population plus one of the few Old Believers church is Maranna, PA. Rats!!!
Im a sub-deacon in contact with all the Russian Orthodox churches in the eastern PA/Philadelphia area. I really want to let everyone know about the choirs tour except I cannot find when and where they perform. I emailed their director with no response. Any idea about their tour schedule?
They just finnished up their tour. They performed in Miami, Atlanta New York area, KY and Aiken SC. There were only 9 dates fro this first run tour. One of the shows was pulled. If you have any questions for the director he is sitting next to me until 3/25/09
I just saw them Thurs. night at Kean College. They were great.
The only way I knew they existed was through this YouTube clip.
Whoever organized their trip to the states, thank you!
However if you want to triple attendance, all you got to do is to tip off the numerous orthodox churches in the New york, phila area a few months ahead of time. Such advertisement would be high gain and cost nearly ZERO.
I saw them on Thursday night at Kean College also and I thought they were fantastic. I was very disappointed with the low turnout. They were so wonderful and there were only about 100 people in the audience.
I just saw these guys in Palm Beach, FL on Wednesday night (Feb. 26, 2009). It was amazing. Does anyone want the set list? We actually got to meet the director. It was an amazing show!
check to see if that show is still on, 3/6/09 was pulled from the schedule. if you come to Wilkins Theatre in Union, NJ on 3/5/09 7:30 or Brooklyn Centre for the performing arts on 3/7/09 or Recital Hall at SUNY Purchase 3PM. At either Union or Purchase I can intoduce you to the director. Come back to the CD table and I'll see you get a signed copy
Thanks for your comment, If there is anything else you would like to ask th econductor he is staying at my house till Monday Morning. Glad you liked the show
from about 4:45 to 5:23 is my favorite part. I listened to it over and over. The chord at 5:14 which I think is a suspended chord and then it resolves to a 5th sent chills down my spine!!
The Choir is performing at the University of Georgia in Athens next month - very much looking forward to going to hear them! Does anyone know where this video was filmed?
This was recorded at Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God on the grounds of the Smolensk Cemetery on Vasilevsky Island (Ostrov) in St. Petersburg. This Church is a minute or two from the grave of St. Ksenia (Xenia) of St. Petersburg. It is a wonderful Church as St. Ksenia herself is credited to helping build it. Look it up on line. The Icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk is considered one of the protector Icons of Russia.. Enjoy the show and bring friends
Thank you very much for the information! I did find things on line about this church. However, one site said that the original Smolensk Mother of God icon was destroyed during World War II & another site said that the original icon has been found. Do you know which is correct?
You would need to go to the website for the University of Georgia's Performing Arts Center rather than the school's music department. Let me know if you have any problems.
here are some translations as it helps to know what is being sung
0:01 Blessed is our God always: both now and unto ages of ages (Choir Responds) Amen.
0:23 For Thou art the Resurrection, and the Life and the Repose of thy servant, who is fallen asleep, O Christ our God, and unto the do we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, and good, and life-creating Spirit: both now, and ever, and unto ages of ages. (Choir) Amen
There is a very wide spectrum of harmonics within the sound - not just the fundamental pitches, but the associated harmonics heard on individul voices, which mkes it an incredibly rich, warm and satisfying sound. It is ful of soul.

I'll be seeing them on 3/6/09, and am curious to see the set list if you'll oblige me.
Also, under what circumstances did you meet the director? (if you don't mind me asking)

from about 4:45 to 5:23 is my favorite part. I listened to it over and over. The chord at 5:14 which I think is a suspended chord and then it resolves to a 5th sent chills down my spine!!

This could almost make you believe. If this was on offer I would go to church

I just went to the UGA music website to find teh date but didn't see any info. Can you tell me when and where they are performing?
honeycomb67 3 years ago

Here you hear resonance, depth, in the lowest range. This I don't hear with Tim Riley, but yes with BIG John Hall, and Jim McClintock.
