Is this anything like Star Wars Galaxies? That's what it looks like. I'm just looking for a good MMO to play for a little, I got into RIFT, but it hasn't hooked me like I thought it would.
@JerenYun Well, I want something fun and addicting, something with very open environment and good combat mechanics. You know something good. I'm not a fan of Cryptic studios so much though, seeing as Champions Online always gives me the "Server Not Responding" Disconnects. But that is like the only game I can't run on my computer for some crazy reason.
@TehKraken721 Star Trek Online has a fairly open environment. In comparison to SWG, it is similar (I think the original SWG was much more open and diverse, but such is my personal feeling). STO runs on the engine used for Champions Online. If that is giving you problems, perhaps you can give the demo a try. (startrekonline[dot]com/demo). It's free.
@JerenYun Yeah I got a trial key, and this game gets the same error. I put a ticket in, no response from that. So I'm just going to wait and see. The 10 seconds I was able to play seemed fun though? I guess haha can't really judge off of a few minutes of gameplay..
I've not played WoW to know what you mean regarding those characters. However, those in the science field are suited for healing others, debuffing the enemy, etc. Engineers are able to construct turrets and shield generators. You don't have to fight directly, no.
There is some element of exploration, but most missions have combat.
A couple things are harder to pick up, but I think the interface is pretty straight forward. Since Trek is full of touch-screens, most of the displays and buttons are interactive.
If there isn't one now, I believe there will be. I do know that people who bought the Collector's Edition box can give their friends a game key that gives them a 10 day free trial.
You can't advance very far solely with exploration. But there are several missions in which you don't fight at all. And you get to make two choices, what your ground character specializes in and what type of ship you have. Which is space specialization. What's great about this game that I didn't care for too much in WoW is that you don't absolutely have to have other people around for quite as much stuff. And both combat situations are much more to my liking than in WoW though kind of similar.
@JerenYun: Have you fought the crystalline entity yet? I was so pleased that I finally found it that I tried to fight it. But I was the only ship in the instance, so I died before I realized I couldn't beat it. I could barely take out one of it's shards before it reached me.
I did it a couple days ago. While the other players may not have been too helpful, I was glad I had a mine launcher equipped. I dropped mines are often as possible, which would help in dispersing and destroying any shards that were after me.

@TehKraken721 What are you looking for in an MMO? There are some similarities to other MMOs with Star Trek Online.

@TehKraken721 Well, if they can help you get the game to run, it sounds like you'd have fun.

@JerenYun Yeah for sure. I am still waiting for a response to help me out. I have no idea why I can't run Cryptic games.

I was tempted to provide my own voiceover for the video, but I had a feeling it wouldn't have been as entertaining.

uhm....mass effect online like...
nice, is there a need to fight on the ground? can't we just explore? or be healers/tanks/rogues like characters?

I agree. I like playing solo at times.
