Someone was right, he looks so much like a zombie I expect him to grab one of the "co-workers" and start eating their brains. It would end with him saying "needs a little butter...."
There's a legend around here. A pitchman buried, but not dead. A curse on commercial breaks, a creepy curse. Orville Redenbacher's curse. They say he died in 1995, but he keeps coming back.
LMAO he had a seizure at the end :O and thoose people were staring at him and they where like "SHIT GO GET THE SHOVEL HOLYYYY SHITTTT ITS A ZOMBIEEEE :O
@KaraClubPenguin He died from age. If you go to the popcorn site it shows the history/about him. he was born in 1908. he died from age but he didnt die from any disease.
These ads have to be one of the stupidest decisions in advert history. I read somewhere that they got literally THOUSANDS of letters and calls from angry consumers swearing off their product until they were pulled off the air.
I am so glad they took these spots off the air. This was nothing less than terribly CREEPY! I noticed that they have started airing the original commercials once again.
You must be blind. I could tell it was fake from "hello." The head doesn't even look right on that body. CGI still sucks when it comes to substituting for the real thing. An actor would have been a better choice. CGI ruined the 2nd and 3rd matrix movies too.
This is brilliantly executed. Hats off to Digital Domain! It had me fooled, and I am in the film business; I thought they were using old footage and outtakes in new cuts. The only thing that tipped me off was (in the current campaign) there's a shot where "Orville" dumps a bowl of corn and a scene slate comes in at the end to mark a tail slate. That particular style of scene slate wasn't around 15 years ago, so I suspected something else was up and did some research.
Even before I got wind of what they did to create "it"... I knew it was plain creepy. Doesn't make me want to buy the product. I'd have to give it a D-
Odd commercial. I actually got to see Orville at the taping of a local news show in San Diego quite a while ago. He was there to show off a new product and he talked a little about developing better popcorn plants and that sort of thing. He seemed like a real nice guy.
I think it was in the early 1980's. It was a local news show by, if I remember correctly, the CBS affiliate in San Diego. Their studio was located in the Kearny Mesa area.
Oh god, shut up you all! That isn't an iPod, it's the Creative Zen Vision:M! My god, is that how the player made its American debut? (Does anyone STILL remember the Zen Micro? Paris Hilton and Maroon5 endorsed it.)
Apparently the firm responsable for this abomination WANTED people to react with repulsion. They say this fad of bringing back dead spokespeople will continue and that they will be credited for being the first, bringing attention to the brand. Sorry guys, but J.M. Schneider (Canadian meat company) did it two years ago- they thank you for bringing attention to their brand... And they didnt provoke mass indignation.
Don't forget David Fincher and Digital Domain who made all this possible. You know the company who brought you: "Titanic," "The Day after Tomorrow," "iRobot," "Cinderella Man" and "Flags of our Fathers"
I think they should just bring Gary back to carry the torch instead of trying to revive old Orville. The character in that video is actually a live actor with a CG'ed face. The voice is done by a voice actor. Both of which don't quite hit the mark. I think, "creepy" is a good adjective in this case.
Oh I'm sure this is just the beginning, I'm sure Gary is coming back too!! Conagra says they are going to also put Mr. Deadenbacher on all the bags and packages of popcorn again.
Take a cue from KFC, ConAgra. Either put out a call for a competent impersonator or turn the character into a cartoon and don't try to make him needlessly contemporary. We know it's someone playing the part. We're not offended by it.
This ad is wrong on so many levels. I like how not only do they resurrected him from the dead, but also make a feeble attempt to "update" him a bit to appeal to the younger generation (Orville toting an Ipod?! I mean, come on...) I'm surprised they didn't give him a backwards baseball cap and have him utter a couple of "Fo shizzle"'s at the end of the spot too.
"Hello, i'm Orville Redenbacher! Can you believe they brought me back from the dead!?

I think Gary Redenbacher should do the commercials instead of having the CGI puppet that's suppose to be his granddad.
