Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this when it originally aired...I was 6 yrs old. It was the first time I saw Bunraku. I always had fond memories of the performance. I wish they would show re-runs of The Muppet Show...there has been many kids that has not been able to enjoy It unless you buy the set for like $150 dollars or so.
TING...Yeeeeooh...TING .....Yeeeeeoooh!......... Some deep lyrics. I remember this vaguely but I was so young. It kinda freakd me out because I had no idea what the hell I was watching, but now I can understand and appreciate the artform and the talent behind this. Very neat and interesting.
@maeveangel me too. it took me a while to phrase the words right to find it again, it really did scare me when i was younger but at the same time i need to see it again
I cannot remember the name of the Kabuki play, but it's based on a story where a woman becomes possessed by a sacred lion mask. It's a fairly well known one so if you searched you probably would be able to find it.
I found the story- it's called "Kagamijishi". A young lady in waiting at court is chosen to perform the lion dance at the new year's celebration but is too shy to perform it properly. She's been locked in a room with the head of the costume and told to practice. At first she's timid but is drawn to it. she starts to practice and is possessed by the spirit of the lion which drives her into a frenzy
thank you thank you thank you for posting this!!!! i remember watching it once on the original broadcast as a kid and not being able to sleep that night. i'm glad to see it wasn't a figment of my imagination :)
The music reminds me of Samurai Shodown.

Very artfully done. I guess to be a great puppeteer you have to "get inside" the character or characters you're doing.
