Look, I know Jesus Christ PERSONALLY- I have the gift of speaking to him as a spiritual medium almost every day- let me tell you he is still fine speaker, always inspiring me to change my corrupt life for the better.

Jesus had brothers & sisters reared from a well to do family, who worked with wood, stone & masonry, hand hewn loom made crafts & linens, pottery & even the occasional piece or two of fine clothing!

His family and personal life on earth was much different than modern man is aware of.

Morton Smith, maybe by mailing because she lived in Europe and not in USA; anyway, it seems they met sometimes in England many years ago. We don't know if Hermon's book is fiction or reality, but it's amazing how many similarities the novel shows, compared to Smith hypothesis about secret, gnostic Mark gospel.

How do you say Jesus IS God? The trinity doctrine has pagan origins and this is not the case with Jesus. The bible states clearly that they are in unity but the following scriptures prove Jesus was not God but with God.

Hi Jcr4runner, can you explain why Jesus calls himself the morning star? I'm pretty new to Christ and his word but am really confused why he would call himself Lucifer. Hope you or somebody else can answer that. I've seen people today drive out demonds and everybody says they must be evil but Jesus did it and we dont question it, we just assume he was good. First, this is a metaphor, Jesus is not literally a morning star.
Second, Lucifer is called a morning star prior to his rebellion.
Third, sometimes metaphors can be used more than once to describe opposite things. The kingdom of God is described by Jesus as being "leaven" that works its way through the whole lump of dough. But in another place, Jesus warns the disciples to beware of the "leaven of the Pharisees."
What we have here is a figure of speech that is fluid, not static.

If you are a Christian believer, take an ancient civilizations class and look at the similarities between it and the pagan beliefs. The ideas all involve virgin birth/resurrection at the different solstices. It's plagiarism of an already two thousand year old idea that attempted to explain the Sun and seasons.
@TheBoringProphet Acoording to Lee Strobels documentary "the case for the real Jesus" this is false. Its an old idea that has been disproven by historians and has become a sort of urban myth. Christianity either precedes these other pagan beliefs and/or the similarities are not there as commonly described. I wont go into it in detail, but if you watch the documentary or read the book, its very convincing.
@karenasmm i am studying religion for my degree, and at the very least some of the ideas definitely have parrallels with pre-existing religious beliefs. particularly buddhism. see the temptation of buddha by the demon Mara and tell me it doesn't smack of the temptation by the devil in the desert. this is just one instance. buddha was also revered by a wise man at his birth, the similarities go on and on and on

@TheBoringProphet well you have to remember that ancient civilizations all came from a similar backround.. from the first man and woman. they had prophecies and promises from God that he would come to earth. It was passed down from generation to generation, but then the stories never are the same when they're passed down so they got changed and most even put it into their own new little gods with those stories to help explain things.

You keep confusing the 4 NT gospels, authorship of which was assigned post 150, with fragments of early documents on which they may have been based. Clement never referred to authors or "gospel". You argument about no OT quotes are a red herring. Scripture at that time was limited to the Torah.

You don't understand the concept of the trinity. The proto-orthodox church fathers ran into problems with the notion of Jesus as divine *son* of God. The problem was that a separate divine being would contradict monotheism. They "solved" the problem by conceptualizing Jesus the Son, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit as manifestations of a single divine being. In other words, an artificial contrivance.

Recently came out a female scholar, certain Sara Hermon, that has written a book " The Galileus Gospel" (italian language). She claims to have been a pupil of prof. Morton Smith, maybe by mailing because she lived in Europe and not in USA; anyway, it seems they met sometimes in England many years ago. We don't know if Hermon's book is fiction or reality, but it's amazing how many similarities the novel shows, compared to Smith hypothesis about secret, gnostic Mark gospel.

Christians don't have to consider the plausibility of anything. They just have to believe that god can do anything. That's the beauty of their story. No matter how wrong it is, how contrary to physics and history the situations are... it doesn't matter because if god wanted to create a triangle with 17 sides or a have someone spit out a Ford truck when he burps, he can do it. There also doesn't need to be proof because NOT seeing proof means god is testing you. You HAVE to believe.

Hi Jcr4runner, can you explain why Jesus calls himself the morning star? I'm pretty new to Christ and his word but am really confused why he would call himself Lucifer. Hope you or somebody else can answer that. I've seen people today drive out demonds and everybody says they must be evil but Jesus did it and we dont question it, we just assume he was good. The old testament tells us we should not worship any other but the New Test. says Father,Word,Holy ghost are one. Who do we believe? Thanks

First, this is a metaphor, Jesus is not literally a morning star.
Second, Lucifer is called a morning star prior to his rebellion.
Third, sometimes metaphors can be used more than once to describe opposite things. The kingdom of God is described by Jesus as being "leaven" that works its way through the whole lump of dough. But in another place, Jesus warns the disciples to beware of the "leaven of the Pharisees."
What we have here is a figure of speech that is fluid, not static.

Lucifer is a title rightfully attributed to Jesus, but satan has tried and somewhat succesfully stolen that name for himself. Look at Gen 1:26 (Let US make man in, OUR image, according to OUR likeness) Not my image, or my likeness but our meaning there is more than one being there.

If you research the origins of the "Trinity," you'll find it is a pagan belief cloaked in christianity. The Bible makes it clear that Jesus was a god, but not God the Father, Yaweh. Jesus is called the "firstborn of all 'creation'" and always showed his subordinate rank to his Father. He said that only his Father knew when the End would be. If he were God, he'd know. Other than that I am a full-time English and Social Studies teacher, the husband of one wife and pro-life Personhood Amendment activist.

No..so your belief in history is based on faith in man's writings..man who can lie, or be mistaken, or deceive. Just because a man writes a book, an article, etc does not always mean it's the truth. But I can promise you that every word spoken of God is truth, can be proven, is being proven as we speak. Look around, the earth testifies of God's design, God's promises are kept, His prophecies fulfilled.

If you are a Christian believer, take an ancient civilizations class and look at the similarities between it and the pagan beliefs. The ideas all involve virgin birth/resurrection at the different solstices. It's plagiarism of an already two thousand year old idea that attempted to explain the Sun and seasons.

@TheBoringProphet Acoording to Lee Strobels documentary "the case for the real Jesus" this is false. Its an old idea that has been disproven by historians and has become a sort of urban myth. Christianity either precedes these other pagan beliefs and/or the similarities are not there as commonly described. I wont go into it in detail, but if you watch the documentary or read the book, its very convincing.

@karenasmm i am studying religion for my degree, and at the very least some of the ideas definitely have parrallels with pre-existing religious beliefs. particularly buddhism. see the temptation of buddha by the demon Mara and tell me it doesn't smack of the temptation by the devil in the desert. this is just one instance. buddha was also revered by a wise man at his birth, the similarities go on and on and on

@TheBoringProphet well you have to remember that ancient civilizations all came from a similar backround.. from the first man and woman. they had prophecies and promises from God that he would come to earth. It was passed down from generation to generation, but then the stories never are the same when they're passed down so they got changed and most even put it into their own new little gods with those stories to help explain things.

This is hard to establish historically (in antiquity) whether the concepts involving virgin birth and resurrection of the messiah originated in prophecy and were copied by multiple religions or whether they were just human ideas or spiritual patterns that were duplicated chronologically. We know too little about that period of human history to be certain which came first.

The earliest mention of the Gospels is in 150 AD by Papias. Authorship is not named until 180 AD by Irenious.

The Gospels are quoted numerous times in the following writings:
The Didache and Clement c. 96 AD
Polycarp, Ignatius c. 107-115 AD
Papias c. 115 - 125 AD
These dates really aren't in question by many scholars except as noted. There is enough internal evidence in the writings themselves to demonstrate dating and authenticity
There isn't a single book in the NT that does not portray Jesus as the Divine Messiah.

NONE of these writings quote the four Gospels. They are early church rituals and procedures. As I said, Papais indicated the existence of some writings. Irenaeus named the four Gospels about 185. The "four" Gospels are not in use til much later. Of course, there were more than 80 Gospels to choose from....
My point is the portrayal of Jesus as God is only in John. Son of God (adopted?) or Servant of God (Didache) does not count.

It's not an opinion. It's fact. There are HUNDREDS of quotations in just the authors I mention here.

1 Clement (c. 68-96 AD):

How is that not a direct quote from the Gospels?

Scholars date 1 Clement to 96 CE. It makes reference to Paul, but not to any Gospel.
Perhaps you are confusing copying with quoting. At this time, versions of documents which later became the Synoptics might have been in circulation, as were Gnostic Jesus sayings.
Clement could well have copied some phrases and send it off to the Corinthians.

Clement also quotes the Old Testament many times, but doesn't name the books. That was the norm because the audience didn't need book, chapter and verse because they knew the Bible better than we do today.
Skeptics try to say that quotes that come directly from the New Testament are not quotes because they don't name the book.
That is nonsensical of course, but if you have blind faith, you will invent anything to support that.

The problem with the Gnostic theory is that there is no Gnostic Gospel older than 150 AD.
Clement is 96 AD.
If so, why do the church fathers prior to this time quote ONLY from the canonical Gospels and not the Gnostic Gospels?
We don't find Clement writing: "The words of Jesus" and quoting something NOT found in the canonical Gospels!

All gnostic Jesus sayings were purged by the orthodox Christianity to which you subscribe. We will never know to what degree gnostic sayings were, or were not, incorporated in orthodox text.
You keep confusing the 4 NT gospels, authorship of which was assigned post 150, with fragments of early documents on which they may have been based. Clement never referred to authors or "gospel". You argument about no OT quotes are a red herring. Scripture at that time was limited to the Torah.

This argument is "begging the question" -- since the documentary evidence does not support it, you have to invent phantom Gospels that must have contained this material that would support your claim.
"Alas! This material was "purged" by the Church fathers!" -- Unfortunately there is no evidence for that theory either.
Most of the Gnostic Gospels mentioned by the Church fathers exist either whole or in fragments. They even quote the Gnostics in their refutations.
So much for the "purge"!

As a reference for christians are a mine field. That's why the Church ran a 45year campaign to hide, obscure and marginalize the docs. Many Doc's disappeared to the Vatican Archives and have never been seen.
One Monk translating a doc given to him in error walked away agnostic.
Showed an Essene political movement that was the pre-cursor to christianity.
It debunks Jesus (The wicked Priest/The Man of a Lie) as no more divine than you or I.

The Vatican never had control over the Dead Sea scrolls. The scrolls were cataloged after each was found prior to being translated. After each one was translated, all were finally published.
There are no DSS that have disappeared.

If i am the mayer of a city and I'm having problems with an area of that city, and I send my son to fix it with a few legal powers, that does not make him mayor of the city. Altho he should respected as if his father would be, because he is there in the mayor / father's name.

You don't understand the concept of the trinity. The proto-orthodox church fathers ran into problems with the notion of Jesus as divine *son* of God. The problem was that a separate divine being would contradict monotheism. They "solved" the problem by conceptualizing Jesus the Son, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit as manifestations of a single divine being. In other words, an artificial contrivance.
