  • BIONICCC... AAAARMMM!!!!

  • that feel when Rin Tezuka

  • Very Infomative..

  • 11:33 : Including over a dozen of our wounded warriors in the U.S. Arm services..... LOL

  • 8:23

Am I the only one irritated by the fact that he used gram as a measure of force? I suppose it's easier than saying 9.8 millinewtons... I think I need to get out of the house more.

  • Seems they're all focusing on using gears and 'conventional' motor power for operating the limbs. Though real muscle doesn't work that way, they need some flexible contracting materials. Nanomuscle?

Cuz ya ain't done 'till you can punch a hole in a brick wall I say!

  • @onoez2k In middle school, I had to design an artificial hand. I didn't like the gears approach, so I used thin dowel rods for the bones, tape for the joints, fishing line for the muscles, straws to guide the fishing line (i.e. not double-jointed), and a rubber glove as skin. The result was a puppet-like hand - you pull one of the lines, a finger contracts. Finally, the ends of the lines were attached to a glove (for me) inside a hard shell, and each real finger could operate each fake finger.

  • FUARKING INTREDASTING

  • Very good. Keep researching.

  • Just call Massive Dynamic.

  • Science rules, religion drools 8D~~

  • This reminds me of both Deus Ex, and Fullmetal Alchemist.

  • One heck of a schoolteacher to have. I'm envious.

  • He never asked for this

  • Wonderful.

  • i love science

  • i never asked for this.

  • Take your best shot, Flatlander Lady - Killswitch

  • 4:06 you touch yourself

  • Play Deux ex Human Revolution, and fear comes over you

  • @TheDaftWorld I understand the fear. But fear will rob industry from doing something good for amputees. Guns and other weapons are good for protection but someone always finds a way to use it for evil. Nobody stopped their production. Just my opinion anyway.

  • I Didnt Ask For This

  • Thumbs up if dues ex human revolution facebook bought you here

  • augmented

  • >That feel

  • She didn't ask for this.

Overused memes aside, give this 15 years and I really believe we will approach Deus Ex-level of prosthetics. Also yeah, screw the fake plastic skin, I want chrome, or shiny black.

  • I never asked for this.

  • @DJFishmonger

Curses! You beat me because I was googling while I was typing. Well played mister ninja.

  • Sarif Industries

  • Deus Ex.

  • @skytop082 I suppose you never watched Robocop.

  • @skytop082 Que Deus ex. ta loco é

  • Do you need to be a biomedical engineer or doctor to make things like this?

  • @Persason nope, you just need 2 know what you are doing ^^

  • @krqkan Yea if you put it like that.... Tod kuiken is both a BME and a doctor (neurologist). TBH you do need some education along those lines to know what you are doing... So your answer to my question doesn't really hold xD

  • @Persason well u can use google and learn bout all this stuff, so if u are bright u could build an arm by your self ^^

  • @krqkan I doubt it being nearly as effective as receiving real lectures at universities :). In theory you could though, the question is just how many people would want some random guys home made robotic arm :P.

  • @Persason well thats true, but still, a 17 yo scout kid built a nuclear reactor in his backyard, but still haha

  • Great video keep up the good work.

  • It's amazing. One day they'll get even better than natural ones. But I dislike the fake plastic skin. If I ever should be in need of a prosthetic limb, I'd want it to look like shiny robotics. Totally bad-ass.

  • @kreaturen You'd still need some sort of cover, otherwise it'd be very difficult to keep clean and functional.

  • when she spun her hand... i could feel the bones in my wrist crying...

  • When she spun her hand, I shit my pants with how awesome it was.

  • I didn't ask for this.

  • see this video right after the one on cyber attacks...the possibilities,,,,,,

  • I think if I had a prosthetic hand, I'd kit it out with a black leather glove, Darth Vader style.

  • I never asked for this

  • Somewhere, we entered the future, where sexy bionic women have become a reality.

  • god damn i wanna pork that bionic woman. i wanna have sex with her weird body. her boobs are huge and awesome

  • I think that Todd is medical doctor, specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and biomeedical engineer, but not surgeon.

  • first standing ovation ive seen on TED

  • bionic handjobs

  • deus ex will become a reality.

  • Great to see this amazing work. And he sounds pleasantly like Richie Cunningham/Ron Howard

  • I can imagine that eventually 3D printers could be used to custom make these arms for the individual, so that they match their other arm when they only lose one.

  • HUMAN REVOLUTION YEAAAHHHH

  • This world is nice :)

  • Very motivating...........Im up and out the door....TY

  • I wonder if she can spin a hot-dog around like a roticery

  • lukeeeee i am you father

  • This was absolutely fascinating.

  • I know this is wrong and trite, but she's hot!

  • The exposed machinery looks so much better than that rubber fake skin you put on the arm. I suppose the rubber has functions other than cosmetic ones, but couldn't the same be achieved by see-through plastic?

  • BIONICCCCC ARMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!

  • Amazing!, but i must admit i first thought of skynet when i saw this ^_^. Thankyou beautiful humans for always thinking!!!

  • 10:41 right side of the screen.

WAKE UP! THOSE SEATS AREN'T CHEAP!

  • interesting ... imagine a control circuit to jump-start failing hearts, afferent and efferent nerves as control circuits, nerves as human - mec/computer interface... , control your own organs change parasympathetic or sympathetic , automatic insulin shots for diabetes patients, rewire the whole nerve system, lets rock

  • PURITY FIRST!

  • Not to sound ignorant, but this makes me want to loose a limb.

  • Ok, now the important question...can she flip people off with it?

  • This is simply amazing! the stuff of science fiction from the not so distant past is now becoming a reality and frankly a miracle in its own right. outstanding sir!

  • I really appreciate the honesty of this presentation. The media always tries to trump research up, as if it wasn't amazing enough already. The last story I read about prostheses made it sound like i-robot style bionic arms were just around the corner. I think the realistic portrayal of remarkable process given here is better.

  • Why doesn't God heal amputees? It no longer matters; we'll do it ourselves.

    (Well, we're getting there, anyway:)

  • this is pretty farking awesome

  • That is amazing stuff. All we need is the next step in nerve to electronic interface to make it integral to the body.

  • @Striker2054 I hope you mean integrate

  • @TheDhezballah Integral: of, pertaining to, or belonging as a part of the whole; constituent or component.

Intigrate: to bring together or incorporate (parts) into a whole.

I would like to se them integrate these parts, making them integral to the body. Thanks for the point out, though.

  • does it have masturbator capabilities?

  • @tranceman14

I'd be afraid to try. That'd be the worst possible time for a malfunction.

  • Amanda, if you read this, I want you to know that I think you are truly beautiful. Phyiscally, mentally, spiritually.

  • @jordanowen42 and bionically.

  • @jordanowen42 I just puked

  • @rpifb18 Well good for you.

  • beautiful work

  • There should be an Olympics for augmented parts with huge cash prises that double when they begin to beat human records, and triple when they beat records set by cheetah's and gorilla's and shit.

  • but will it blend?

  • @aakarsh5292 lol

  • @aakarsh5292 copypastabullcrap

  • Awesome!

  • SCIENCE!!!! It works.

  • I think I read about this on a E-book in Deus Ex HR

  • Amazing !

  • I'm thinking doing somthing like this more advanced

  • Finally something tangible and not over-hyped mechatronic devices.

  • Couldn't that headset that reads brainwaves help with this?

    /watch?v=fVhggGSjXVg

  • Very cool

  • Good progress...

  • "i know that feel"

  • 12:30 Coolest thing I've seen a live human do, probably ever.

  • Amazing! People like him and his team are making the world a better place.

  • Knew Kuiken when I was in stroke rehab at R.I.C. some time ago, the only 'minus' in an otherwise enlightening odyssey. One cold fish.

  • really great approach, i'm curious how the pattern matching will further work out.

  • Amanda is damn sexy...with or without that arm.

  • Are all those electrodes really necessary? I mean, when the muscles move, can't the movement be read optically?

  • @thegoodhen

    Read optically under a shirt?

  • @kusotarre Of course. Can't your computer mouse work in darkness?

  • If we had telekinesis, we wouldn't need any arm.

  • brilliant! hope he keeps getting funds to continue the great work - and make it commercially viable. good luck.

  • thumbs up if you think todd should get a nobel prize

  • 2 people are just straight up a-holes.

  • 15:18 ...but my favorite one was... the kungfu grip

  • 17:40 sounds like he's advertising for a new iPhone.

  • They should go more hybrotic or organic for prosthetic systems. Siphonophores are connected in their colonies by a simple neural net. Just grow nerves into the arm with nanobioreactors...

  • that awkward moment when he meant 'when you touch...' but said "you touch yourself..."

  • love it

  • I am incredibly grateful to live in a time where such a discovery can be made.

  • Thumbs up for motorised prosthetic thumbs.

  • this episode does not get on my nerves..

  • 12:32 I lol'd

    What a charismatic woman

  • He reminds me of Dr. Howard Mierzwiak from Eternal Sunshine. xD

    Amazing.

  • Humanity: advance 1 step through application of science

  • The future of the world might be based on him . Today an arm , tomorrow a whole body .

  • I meant Ghost in the Shell

  • Did anyone see Ghost in the Machine?

  • And how did she pay for all this health work?

Or better how much did it cost?

  • Comment removed

  • huh, so the bitching and complaining by people whose speakers are permanently set at hiroshima volume finally paid off. well done.

  • @325982668

    lol ftw.

now get them to turn down TV commercial volume!

  • fantastic

  • This is fucking awesome. =)

  • and so, Deus Ex: Human Revolution begins.

  • @DarkMnMChocolate I was thinking the exact same thing! :D

  • HUMANITY - FUCK YEAH!

  • i loved the bling bling on her wrist.

  • 16:48 the beginning of the end..

  • Fascinating

  • 0:15

  • OH GOD!!

Watson computer, BIG DOG, siri, and now this..

    science is AWOSOME!!!

  • This + Fake skin + more time/money/research = probably the best invention of the decade... all of these things exist and are possible... they just need money and time.

  • @Oceanopain To hell with "fake skin". I'd prefer, if I had one, to have it in a stylish chrome/black/graphite/interchangeable appearance. As well as being modular and hot-swappable. >:3

  • @LithiumLogica Well that's all good and fine if you want to advertise the fact of your fake arm... and carry around several extra pounds. but with the fake skin, there's the possibility of bystanders not even knowing your arm is fake in the first place. :D

  • @Oceanopain Well, I understand some people might want to hide the fact that they're missing their real flesh and bone part. At the same time I look at things like motorcycles, sports cars, jewelry, and personal devices like smart phones, ipads, kindles, nooks, etc. and I see how we sex up things that aren't us. Why not do the same with something that isn't you, but is something on which you depend so much it is essentially a part of you?

  • @Oceanopain Oh, and I have a certain affinity for the concept of an augmented human body. I don't see it as less human. I see this as being another part of the logical evolution of our species and I embrace it fully. I don't know, with the current state of technology, that I would be willing to give up a fleshy limb that works fine for something like what's being demonstrated here, today. I would, however, jump at the chance to have one if I was missing a limb.

  • @Oceanopain And that's completely ignoring the inevitable future of limb and body augmentations that are far superior to the real, fleshy counterparts.

  • @Oceanopain I'm excited, can't you tell? And I have little shame in admitting I get choked up and tear up a little each time I watch this vid. It's fucking amazing.

  • @LithiumLogica I agree completely. Although, what are the implications of us as a species knowing that we can basically tear our own limbs off for robotic ones. That would really be interesting to watch... Also, I agree with the idea that the chrome and metal covers would be cool. I (being a FMA fan) think bionics are one of the coolest things in modern science along with (bit of a Controversial subject) the almost infinite possibilities of stem cells.

  • @Oceanopain I'd say, as with all technology, there's potential for gain and potential for harm. Overall, I'd say technology and our application of it has had a pretty good track record, barring the few HUGE mistakes here and there.

You should check out Ghost in the Shell, if the cyber stuff looks cool to you.

  • @LithiumLogica That's something I can agree too. Also, I tried watching that once, but I got board rather quickly... I may try again though now that you mention it.

  • @Oceanopain

As for controversy on stem cells, it's only controversial because of religion. Sam Harris made a good point about the suffering of using a few day old human embryo.

He explained the human embryo would be roughly 150 cells. In comparison there were 150 thousand(or million) cells in the brain of a fly. So, without religious interference, there's more suffering in the world every time you swat a fly than when you take cells from a few day old human embryo.

  • @LithiumLogica Oh, I understand this, I was just saying that so as not to offend you or anyone else. as for the facts, that is an interesting comparison. Do you have a source, I'd really like to read into this subject.

  • @Oceanopain /watch?v=vKWYENPxNtM

Sam Harris is a Neuroscientist. He's also really good at explaining things like this.

  • @LithiumLogica Cool, Thanks.

  • @LithiumLogica That's a good point, in Richard Dawkins book "The God Delusion" he mentioned that embryos at that stage don't even have nervous systems to feel pain. So I think the point is, what suffering?

  • @LithiumLogica You shouldn't be ashamed at that feeling, empathy is nothing to be ashamed of, antipathy is.

  • @carlosewm Oh, no, what I mean by "I have little shame in admitting..." is that I don't really have any shame in admitting I tear up every time I watch this. I had a hard time explaining it to my girlfriend, because she doesn't really get the same feeling, I guess. Orphans in third world countries, abused animals, etc... those don't really affect me as much, any more because they're so in your face and... almost always negative, trying to guilt you into caring. This stuff is inspiring. ^_^

  • @LithiumLogica i was just thinking that. carbon fiber and titanium, not fake skin!

  • science is doing "Gods" work, isnt it?

  • @thenotorlousbig XD yeah!, because he didn't do a good job at all, I mean salamanders can growth their limbs back, right? why couldn't he add that to our design XDD

  • @thenotorlousbig

I think science is the interpreted capture of nature like painting a portrait.

But I don't think God exists, so our perceptions are different.

& your observation is quite poetic so I applaud you for that.

  • @HumbleVillain93 dont mean to alarm you, but i am agnostic.

  • Brilliant!

Looking at a few of the comments about what it reminds people of and I'm showing my age by mentioning Six Million Dollar Man!

  • The Luke Arm!! Makes me think more of Ghost in a Shell @Nunchucks67

  • @SidTempleton Really? Makes me think of Terminator...

  • I never asked for this...

  • All I can think about is starwars.

  • @Nunchucks67 fma for me... :)

  • great presentation! one of the best and most interesting i have seen in a while!

  • wondering if its possible to divert the nerves to our back/rear shoulders for more space
