Oil should be changed when engine has just been used,and hot, to stir up any sediment in the bottom of the oil pan. It's also a good idea to pre fill the oil filter before reinstalling on the engine. It might not make a big deal, but better safe than sorry. Don't rev the engine at all, till that filter is full. Although a pain to work with, good advice on the gloves. No V6 Subarus that I know of.
Oil should be warm - drains better. Also you should use neoprene gloves - oil is a contaminant and known carcinogen so skin contact should be minimised. There's no connection between air filters and oil changes - they have very different service intervals.
