@keaton1895 true, but he came in as the bass player, replacing paul samwell smith, who left to manage the band. chris dreja heard him play and volunteered to play bass. beck thought page was trying to upstage him, so he left. eventually, page was left to honor yardbird obligations as the new yardbirds, which morph into led zep. look up the album, five live yardbirds, with songs called, i'm confused, white summer, when zeppelin came out, they made them pull the album. rare now. peace out!
@LedWhisky69 Zeppelin could never be greater than the Who not because of ticket sales or popularity but view it musically. The Who were always coming up with different tones, different ideas, different albums. Zep meanwhile stayed in their heavy blues/folk rock field, with minor expansions into other fields and ideas. The Who were always a step ahead of Zep, several steps, but they couldnt keep up with The Beatles or Floyd.
@HarrisonPaniszczyn None of what you said here is even true. Every Zeppelin album shows a variety of different tones and musical styles. There's a different Zeppelin song/album for every possible mood you can feel. You're just plain talking out of your ass, dude. Go away, troll boy.
@HarrisonPaniszczyn That's because Led Zeppelin WAS better than The Who. The Who made many terrible songs, and this is coming from a huge Who fan. Don't tell me I don't know The Who because I know them better than you. How many others like myself would mention these songs as being their favs-Trick Of The Light, Naked Eye, Water, Heaven & Hell, Young Man Blues, Success Story, The Music Must Change, Relay, etc., etc.
After watching this a few times I noticed that Keith Relf looks in Jimmy Page's direction at about 1:12, when sings about arguing with someone else. Relf didn't get along that well with Page, who was a bit too professional and polished for Relf's liking.
The Black Keys ripped these guys off BIG TIME....it's cool, everyone rips everybody off anyway. Theses were the daze when the band actually played live...these guys were way ahead of their time!!!! Thnx 4 dee post
@biggpiston Lol, hardly. The Animals didnt contribute as much to music or culture as the Beatles did. The Doors were great, and I'm putting them in the 4th slot because they were the greatest American rock band of all time. And Zeppelin were mighty, and they stand head above shoulders from everyone else, unless its the Beatles, Floyd, Who and Doors.
Actually the fame LZ recieved has nothing to do with the fact that the Who are indeed better than Zeppelin. Zep is probably 4th best Rock 'n' Roll band, first being the Beatles, 2nd being Pink Floyd, 3rd being the Who, 4th being Zeppelin.
@HarrisonPaniszczyn Dude, STOP trying to pass of your opinion as a fact. There are MANY MORE PEOPLE who agree that Zeppelin was a greater band than the Who and, in fact, Zeppelin WAY OUTSOLD the Who, so what do you think about that? Opinions are opinions, your statements are not facts.
@LedWhisky69 Led Zeppelin was better than The Who, and The Who is my third favorite band. Jimi Hendrix/Band of Gypsys had more light & shade than that of The Who.
@WEBERisAbadCOACH I completely agree with you and I'm also a pretty big Who fan. I saw them play live about 10 years ago and it was a KILLER show, but when it comes to who is better between them and Zeppelin, there's no contest, in my opinion. Some might feel differently, but it doesn't matter. We all have our own opinions. It just gets frustrating when people try to justify those opinions with lies and distortions of the facts. Hey, I'm just glad that there are more likes than dislike. But I'm gonna say it, THERE SHOULD BE NO DISLIKES! Who comes to this video just to dislike it? Creeps.
the Yardbirds were such a great band, the mood that they evoke for me is indescribable. Zep is my alltime favorite band, but there is indeed something special about the Yardbirds. Groundbreaking stuff!
Jimmi Page was shortshrifted on this video (not one segment of this video included his fret work!@#). His lead riff (it wasn't Jeff Beck of Eric Clapton) was so much ahead of its time that I can't even finish this sentence...
Wow... This right when Beck left and Jimmy Page had to become the guitarist on, like, a days notice! Hes totally nailing Beck's quirky guitar parts. Definitely the Best.
Is it possible this was done when who was doing what was up in the air? Beck wasn't around, but wasn't officially out of the band? Jimmy doing bass? Between the Jimmy and Jeff on dual lead guitar, but Beck did a disappearing act, so just Jimmy was around, but didn't want to start something? Who knows? But maybe that's why "the guitarist" and "the bassist" were shot the way they were.
@yosefXalXsaraf when my 17 yr old heard this song he said he knew. i looked at him in disbelief cause his usual fare is some wretched rap song. no mom, really, observe and report. who knew
Anyone know how to get page's tone. He's got a distinct guitar sound that's evident from this point on until the first Zeppelin album. What was it: fuzz, wah wah, distortion, amp, pick ups. Whatever it was he lost it from zep 2 onwards.
His intonation is off,he's not hitting the notes on his bends, and he keeps rushing the beat. Sloppy. Listen to what Buddy Guy on of Page's biggest influences, was doing in the mid 60s. I saw LZ open for the Who and get their asses totally kicked in terms of energy, dynamics ,excitement, sound quality, showmanship .In terms of drug crazed abandon ,Moon made everyone else, look like suburban posers at the mall
@Cometsamba The Tele simply got knocked out of tune. Page is playing properly while trying to compensate for the poor tuning and it still sounds pretty damn good to me. It happens to the best, even Hendrix. LZ got their asses kicked by the Who? Funny because LZ went to be 10x the band the Who ever were and even Pete Townshend has admitted to that, hence his envious dislike of the band. BTW, featured acts are supposed to surpass the opening acts, dumbass. Otherwise, what's the point?
Great! P. S. Smith and (from the looks of that tele I’m guessing it’s…) J. Page are totally headless! Funny: that twelve (?) years prior to this Ed Sullivan et al. were reluctant to show Elvis from the waist down; here we don’t get anything from the chest up! Nothing recedes like progress right?
@SlappyFrankenstein Hell yeah! I love this stuff! You should hear Hendrix from the same time or even earlier. I have a live recording of Jimi from 1965 and its just ridiculous! Hendrix loved these guys...
@producer73 The mind still boggless ,why this band began to suck , after Beck left.
One would've thought Page was a valid replacement, (Live),but after "Happenings",almost nothing valid was recorded. The track "little games",was acceptable, but that album sucked.
When I heard Yardbirds songs, no other pop group in all the long history I couldn 't associate more with electricity !.Pure electric sound, and Keith voice as a lot to do with that
I saw Yardbirds live in 1965 when both Page & Beck were in the band. One of the best shows I witnessed in the 60s. The other best live were Rolling Stones '65, Donovan '67, Cream 1968, Beatles were disappointing in '66 ( both shows Seattle) .
@duffh oh man i envy you so much right now. i was born in the wrong era. btw about the beatles live, i love the beatles but let's face it they were a pretty bad band live.
@JAHISRAEL there are at least 3 cameras. the director is the one who "calls the shots" and tells the camera men what to focus on. better thhan most of the long shots of the whole band that was the norm during this period. just not what you want to see.
Directors are over paid morons who think their idea is what people want to see.
Just like today......they think we want a close-up of a persons nose or their hands instead of what is actually happening.
They look at the raw film and then tell the editor's to cut out all the best parts and just use shots of the singers face and shots of the drummer but I guess those guitars are just floating in space with a pair of hands attached
@JAHISRAEL this was a tv show, which is "cut" live in real time. directing can be good or bad; depends on the viewer's tastes. that's why some tv and movies win directing awards and others lose. you give a "fail" to this clip. others might think it is artistic. art is a subjective medium.
Oh I know it was a tv show and I have been around for a long time and a director to me is John Ford not some director like we get on NBA games now showing the inside of a persons mouth or up their nose.
Let me put it this way....Frank Zappa would not have done that and would have told the tv director to fuck off.
Yeah I saw Frank back in the 70's and still have my ticket stubs!
too bad all the untalented pop stars of today don't take a clue from guys like this. these guys could play their instruments and sing, unlike all the studio manufactured hacks around now.
@ioriorioriorio I agree! I detected a little of it in Cream's "In The White Room" (I think that's what it's called), especially in the instrumental part at beg. and end!
WOW! man 'I feel that way today about everything man ,over, under, sideways, down, backwards, forwards, square and round, sounds like a groovy square dance man'this is like ;freak'in me out man, totaly gassy man;lets all do the go-go to this hip cat tune man.
that he was either badly advised working with Mr Coverdale or that he is SO creatively redundant that he had to employ a Plant clone to get any credibility as a solo artist?
The only other project he has played on that i have heard was the Black Crows album where he played a slow and rather uninspired version of Peter Green's 'Oh Well''.
Does this answer any of your points and queries?
How can you even say Led Zep were even an ''ERA DEFINING'' band?
OMGZz: WHAT are you on..?I've got to be in a band to have an opinion?
Jimmy Page is very good at regurgitating his influences-his real strength and talent is as a producer.
The Led Zep albums are masterpieces of production and sound engineering but the overall musicianship doesn't translate live.,despite the fact they all had great ability separately.
My favourite work of page's is as a session man-the guitar work for The Kinks and 'LuLu and the Luvvers' as well as The first Gear's....T.B.C
.Anyway,Jeff Beck is twice the guitar player Page is.
If Page is SO creative WHY has he only had three or four solo albums out over the past 28 years?
The soundtrack for ''Death wish 2 "is SO bad...!Outrider is just as lamentable ,the only good thing on it being Chris Farlowes vocals.
The rest,The Firm and 'Coverdale-page'' i haven't heard but the mere fact He is reduced to working with the biggest Robert Plant clone on the PLANET tells you

@ Zappa
Even though I grew up back then LSD forms of "art" are just trash and mud under the feet of hippy's at Woodstock.
(or these goofy message boards with "character" limits" and no bbcode or html)

too bad all the untalented pop stars of today don't take a clue from guys like this. these guys could play their instruments and sing, unlike all the studio manufactured hacks around now.

Love the indian riff all thru the song...zep and cream would use this trick on many tunes.....
ioriorioriorio 11 months ago
@ioriorioriorio I agree! I detected a little of it in Cream's "In The White Room" (I think that's what it's called), especially in the instrumental part at beg. and end!

Superb performance of an unusual song by the group. Relf's vocal is good on this.
flimbambo 1 year ago 12
@flimbambo
I disagree with it being "unusual." It was catchy, but it was not Sgt. Pepper-unusual.

Cont...are FAR more influential and NO riff Page has written will EVER match anything written by Tony Iommi who has such a fantastic melodic talent.

cont:
that he was either badly advised working with Mr Coverdale or that he is SO creatively redundant that he had to employ a Plant clone to get any credibility as a solo artist?

BLUESGUITARMANIAC 1 year ago
continued....''Leave My Kitten Alone'' are great.
.Anyway,Jeff Beck is twice the guitar player Page is.

Page is SO over rated!
