I'm speaking for nearly everybody here, as i think, that i wished this song would be released as a single (for the older folks ;) ) and for downloading. I personaly could download it, but as long as it's still here to hear 4 free, it's ok. What do you think, would you like it with the spoken intro or just the song? Esp. Iglesias' intro gives it more depth and intensity. Best would be the original and the movie version if, as I've read, some parts had been loop for cinema.
"Something in French... Well... This french song is so recent that I have to read all the lyrics because... It was only written three days ago. It's only three days old and... That's why I have the lyrics with me. But I can promise you that from today it's going to be very popular in France. You see... I believe it..."
Basically Julio is teasing the Olympia audience with a cover of one of the most popular french songs ever (written by Charles Trenet some 33 years before)
"Quelque chose en français... Mais... C'est tellement nouvelle cette chanson française qu'il faut que je lis tous les paroles parce que... Elle vient de la faire il y a trois jours. Elle a seulement trois jours et... C'est pour ça que j'ai les paroles ici. Mais je vous promets que depuis aujourd'hui elle va être très populaire en France. Vous voyez... Je pense..."
The next summer hit? I was in TTSS too. Great film. Great song. I love live recordings more than most well produced studio albums. There's this hidden power, you can feel it. It's not well produced but you can feel the energy of the singer and band. I don't know what Iglesias saw this night, how he felt. What did happen before the show? All this cumulates in this song, as with every other singer oder player.
I watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, came home, listened to this song 30 times in a row, fell into a deep sleep and haven't had a negative thought since
The reason this song resonates is the fact that this emplifies the period the movie is set in and that it also compliments the pace of the film....the pace being plodding untill the last quarter where it ups the pace untill the unveilling of the finale...enter the song...brilliant =) this urges your feelings towards the film to the climax...now it's time to have that cigarette!
@markcimus I think it also has something to do with Mark Strong's character Jim Prideaux becoming a french teacher, and the sense of betrayal he feels towards his supposed friend. In my opinion he is the best thing in the film.
Also the applause coinciding with Smiley taking his rightful place as head of the Circus speaks on behalf of the audience.
love this at the end of ttss, the thing you realise wathcing it, is that the life of a spook is a truly tragic thing, almost completely devoid of joy and mirth, and this song provided such a bizarre juxtaposition with the tone of the rest of the film, fantastic
Music on TTSS conducted and composed by ALBERTO IGLESIAS a wonderul Spaniard musician...his choice of pieces could not have been better...this end is absolutely awesome!
I loved the movie, but perhaps if they exposed a bit more suspense, i.e. more relevant fear or tension-conveyed action (no stupid special effects though), it would attract more wider audiences
Its sort of interesting. Most folks who didn't like the movie seem to be saying (1) that it was too slow/boring, and (2) that it was too hard to follow. How can those both be true??? Sounds like some people tuned out when there weren't any CGI explosions in the first 10 mins. At least everyone here liked the ending enough to go find the song.
@JorkellDIY I only understood the gist of the plot, but that doesn't mean I didn't love it! For a lot of people it was pretty confusing which turned them off. It's not because they're literal shit eaters that don't know a good movie, but because they would like something easier to understand.
Ironically, Mark Strong from TTSS, was "Lord Blackwood" in the first Sherlock Holmes! One thing I noticed during TTSS was the fact that many people around me were chomping on their various "snacks" not realizing that it was not your usual LOUD, action packed film. It's intelligent and thoughtful, and must be listened to carefully in order to understand all its nuances in order to understand the film. Unfortunately a LOT of chompers just don't get it, while spoiling it for everyone else....
@MaggieMay575 Several prominent critics praised the "mood" of the picture but criticized it for being difficult to follow. The original screen adaptation of the book was seven hours long so it's not difficult to understand what a challenge it must have been to distill the story down to two hours.
loved Tinker Tailor and the spectacular ending accompanied by this hilarious rockin' song just topped it off for me. Came straight home from the cinema tonight to find it on youtube
To be fair, i understand why many wouldn't like the film. I dont think i would if i didnt have such a respect for and reverence of the era. Its not to everyone's tastes, and wasn't the most easy to follow of films. While the general public can unfairly heap praise upon garbage, you have to respect the fact that not every film is particularly accommodating of the general public. Tinker is a film far grittier and real than many on offer.

TTSS was an intelligent spy movie, one that doesn't overwhelm you with mindless action and doesn't tell you everything -- you have to pay attention and figure out what's going on. I thought it was excellent. And JorkellDIY, I think we are soul mates.
Makes sense since the music for TTSS was by one Alberto Iglesias. I haven't heard this song since my early childhood, long long time ago...
I'm not sure if this song captures the spirit of the era (ok, I'm not that old), but the film is one long tribute to the late 50's early 60's. I mean sitting in Wimpy's, eating a burger with silverware! No computer in sight. And everybody knows England was in a constant fog (indoors too) during those years :-) Loved it.
That movie ending was worth the entire movie which was zero flat without it. It's like the whole 2 hours were rising to that culmination point. And even without the movie this is a very cool song, finally some real music for a change.
I can't find this wonderful version on iTunes...:( Saw the movie this weekend, it's so f***ing awesome. Always nice with a movie that makes you feel a little bit... dense.
Just saw the movie TTSS and I must say, what a fantastic masterpiece of a movie! And this song added to the end of the movie was so good (and that comes from a person who are mostly in to hardrock and heavymetal, ha,ha).
But this happens sometimes for me, on rare occasions, like in this movie, that the combination of a song with a particular part of a movie actually makes the song and the movie better than if one would listen/see the two apart. Hope you understand what I mean...
Trying to work out If I love this song because of its elegance or because I associate it with Colin Firth getting shot in the face. Defiantly British film of the year
@JorkellDIY Hear, hear. This was the most atmospheric, intelligent, and profound film of recent times. It brought Colin Firth and Gary Oldman to a peak of performative self-discipline. True, it is overly enigmatic on first watch; second time round, everything falls perfectly into place like a symphony. I was brought back to the glory days of seventies cinema
@JorkellDIY What if I'm someone who honestly loved and understood TTSS - both in book and film form - and at the same time, I also love the Sherlock Holmes adaptation/s to pieces?
@JorkellDIY Hey I didn't say I didn't like the movie, au contraire - I loved it! I had some problems to understand everything, so I felt the urge to watch it at least once again. I loved the subtle clues and the lovely absence of clichés. But please remember, some highly acclaimed critics have written its only fault is that Alfredson made it too complicated, so not only "dimwits" think that...
@JorkellDIY Lol I liked the Movie Sherlock and Tinker you saying that I'm still an idiot? You must be a close minded asshole. Do you know how amazing SH was? I guess not cause you don't give stuff a chance. Both movies made you think. But, in general you can't compare the movies!!!!!! This movie is about "Mole in agency" Sherlock is about "Stopping a man from causing a world war" Shut te fuck up and learn to tell the difference between movies learn how to find if you can compare them
@CooleyReviews At the finish with the horns, yes. Would like to see one more George Smiley story brought to the screen, with GO in the lead, of course.
@lewiske The sea, seen in, bays along the clear, a silver reflections. The sea, changing reflections in the rain. The sea, in the summer sky, confuses her white sheep with the angels so pure. The sea, shepherdess of azure infinite ... oh, yes, eh! see near ponds, the great reed wet. See these white birds these houses and rusty. The sea, has lulled along the clear gulfs and a love song. The sea, oh, cradled in my heart for life ... Life!
Like everybody else, I saw "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" the other day, and have been listening to this song ever since. SUCH a great movie, saw it for Gary Oldman but good god so many other hot British guys...and then Mark Strong and Colin Firth at the end. I cried. Just....wow.
I'm also here because of TTSS, but my god what a lovely song. Evokes memories of playing Bioshock, too! And I adore the distinctly 70's feel of this version. <3
I fell asleep watching Tinker Tailor and half woke up to this booming through the surround sound at the end. One of the most surreal experiences of my life.
@tathjones Yo really? How could you possibly have fallen asleep during Tinker Tailor? What an outstanding film with fine acting all around and a stellar, complex plot to go along with it. I most definitely agree with the surreal part though.
@Aestra19 you see, some people don't like to think. Keep it simple...good guy, bad guy...happily ever after and all that. TTSS, masterpiece. I hope they continue with the trilogy.
@TheBigEase Well said man...well said. What people don't understand is that by thinking they can experience a more intricate sense of pleasure while watching a film. (that applies to almost anything)
The director said that this song was something they imagined George Smiley would listen too. It was an interesting choice for the end of the movie but I'm not so sure about Smiley gettin into it.
I also looked this up after returning home from the movie TTSS. What a fabulous closing song for a movie that's so international! And I love the irony that the joyful song comes after the film's two-hour somber gray mood and images and the complicated and dark plot and characters. Great! And thanks Julio
@maggiegillie I didn't care much for the movie, but I completely agree that this upbeat song made for a tremendously ironic and powerful juxtaposition against the "somber gray mood" of the film.
świetny kawałek :) kiedy znalazłem kto wykonuje ostatni utwór w filmie nie mogłem uwierzyć że to nieśmiertelny Julio :) pozdrawiam wszystkich widzów filmu z Garry Oldman'em ! :)
The movie brought me here too! I loved the ending with this song! Oh, those groovy '70's! (I had to look up "Second Greatest Secret Agent in the Whole Wide World" too!)
Julio's son wrote the soundtrack so it was quite nice to use his father's song (this one) for the final scenes. At first I thought it didn't quite fit but as the song went on and we see Smiley triumphantly take Control's job the song fit the upbeat ending - making it a perfect choice.
Dear people that have seen Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and anyone else, thank you for seeing this video, for thanks to you I have more that 30,000 views. Thanks again and enjoy!
@Dardanstarnan Thanks so much for posting it...hearing this as the final sequence in the film blew me away, after which I hunted down this version of a true classic....amazing!

@Tails137 Totally agree.

@rasoros The mole was being used by the Soviets in a ploy to get access to the Americans through the British. Boom. Movie unraveled.

What an amazing song, and what a great ending for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Beautiful! Unfortunately this song is not included on TTSS soundtrack CD!!! Shame!

Emmmmm..... sorry but, I'm a former spy from KARLA, and where is USSR now?
Hector1892 1 month ago
Karla is the one dislike because he knows this is George Smiley's favorite song.

Julio's son wrote the soundtrack so it was quite nice to use his father's song (this one) for the final scenes. At first I thought it didn't quite fit but as the song went on and we see Smiley triumphantly take Control's job the song fit the upbeat ending - making it a perfect choice.

And Gary Oldman in the last scene in TTSS? Julio sings for triumphant Smiley sitting in Control's chair. That was really something.

Beautiful song which gets me in a good mood. And Colin Firth was great in that ending scene in Tinker Tailor....the scene was simply prodigious!
