@achildofthesixties I sang this in a barbershop quartet and the writer of the words was there; at least so he claimed. His name was Bill waddington a famous British Actor and Music Hall performer.
Wikipedia states that "It was sung during WW2 by soldiers and sailors". A little while before 1947. Waddington was a WW2 entertainer. I can't find a definative answer as to who wrote the words and only have Waddington's word that it was him.

Actually, in 1944 Nick Lucas made this sone, or a version of it, if he didn't first make it, it's one of the worlds' unslved mistories. XD

It may be a Flanigan and Allan song a comedy duo from around WWII in UK. Certainly sounds like one of theirs.
