one of the most graceful things ever done in rock.....Page recognizing that death of Bonham meant that Zep was finished.....he preserved their legacy forever and that authentic sound .....Bonham was NOT replaceable...he was a monster.
@photinia99 Yours is one of the best comments I have ever heard aside from their press release that said ' because of the loss of our dear friend, and the undivided harmony we felt, and respect we have for him and his family, we decided we could not continue as we were"
@dthevideofan657289 I think you mean Bonzo. Zoso is still with us :) But yeah... A huge loss. No other can drum like him. He's a beast on the drums. He's a real man on the drums. He's the best on the drums.

This is IMHO the best version that I ever heard from best band in world!
The best song of Led Zeppelin and the best performance.
First time that I heard this version was with an old cassette tape that my father acquires in the street. I´m still having that bootleg that has this version. My favorite over all great Zepp´s songs. Bonzo as a God of Drums!! Thanks for share the audio.
@alejandroulises Very good version ('77 tour had better I'd say), but DAMN they still had "it" on this tour, shame it all went down in flames. My 1st Zep CD boot was Zurich '80, it was a 2cd set and cost $90 in 1988, and I was blown away by the perfect sounboard quality!
@ArtemArtak Well, if you look at their track history is this time period, it was not very frequent. Now, in their younger days they sure did open for others. And a little through the 70s. But, when other bands say they became superstars, they literally did. They had music by the nuts. Their arrogance with Peter Grant also shows how they became bigger than life. Whatever they wanted, they got.
Really weird I was there! I was 15, the 21st indeed because it was my cousin s birthday and she chose to stay home.
The lady at the boxoffiche informed us wrongly about the selldate of the gig. So I got there late and had a ticket from a far..I was also having flue or something and I felt very ill. But still, I was there!!!! Did not recognise the first song. Must have been Train kept a rollin? I still had alot of work/music to trawl through before I had any clue.
Dig it. Paqe is god. Or so the rock said. Great version. Go back 1 yr. if you want to see him do a mediocre job at it but completely blown out on the diesel. Dig it Dave
This is an excellent performance. The intensity, the solo, the power, mystery, and hammer of the gods . . . 4:00 - 4:34 is/are spectacular!
The delay (repeat) effect on the guitar does work well here actually. But in 1980, you couldn't really synch a guitar delay to the drums unless the drums were on the identical digital beat (which did not really exist unless a drum machine). So, a great result despite the obstacles.
This is an excellent performance. The intensity, the solo, the power, mystery, and hammer of the gods . . .

These guys ended up defining Rock music, don't know if they set out to do it, but they ended up doing it. I've played with some of the best, members of Sabbath etc, but this is another level. Hats off to them.Bloody marvellous !!
Probably the greatest session guitarist that ever lived, coupled to an exceptional vocalist and lets not forget the rythmn section, irreplaceable drummer and bass.

@TruthAxe I finally got around to watching the official DVD. They are a bit overindulgent at times but it is quite a spectacle even all these years later to watch on my big screen. I'm sure seeing them live in the 70's was moment.
Awesome live version, they were really made a huge comeback in 79'. They were really getting it together. So sad Bonzo's drinking got him after all they had been through. Yeah a huge piece of Rock and Roll died that year. Led Zeppelin rules Rock forever. For those who don't think so, you don't know Rock and Roll. R.I.P. Bonzo
Wow! Definitley an improvement from the 1977 version. Jimmy is really tearing it up. Great playing here! Very hit or miss guitar player. No doubt brilliant, but it seems his performances are based on what ever levels of substances he consumed. I read that during the 77 tour Page hardly ate, and had a steady diet of Cocaine, Heroin, and banana daquiries. No wonder his playing was very spotty on that tour. Lucky to still be alive.
it sounds pretty bad, but, the drums always sound frsh.even if page was too high to really kick-as as is the case on this one,John Henry Bonham was taking no prisoners! And even some of the solo here sounds untouchable, really complicated and he isn't missing much of it!!!They were the baddest, that is all there is to it!biggest druggies of all-time too!!!LOL!!!
damn it.. howcome everytime they play this song live it sound like shit and especially the solo can never sound like the studio version one. i hate it. i am a huge zeppelin fan but it sounds weird.
@juanc2499 because when he was doing any show live starting after the release of presensce page was taking heroin and couldnt play guitar as well robert plant was depresed about his son john honham was drinking like 10 times as much and John Paul Jones just really hated being there
Simple, studio version is recorded in a closed, padded room with multiple layers of guitar. A live version is often recorded in a big open venue with hundreds if not thousands of humans who each change the sound wave simply by standing there.
@juanc2499 Well, live, Page didn't have the whole layered guitar effect backing him up. Also, since Page was such a studio wizard, he could use this to his advantage and get the exact tone he wanted to make his solos sound as incredible as they did.
Not to mention that Page seems to have gotten progressively sloppier perpetually since Zeppelin debuted as a band >.>
That said, he better put together another f-ing album before he dies, or I'm going to.... cry.
If he would lay off the phaser pedal this would have sounded better. Muddying up his tone makes the one guitar sound sluggish in a song where the studio version has at least 3 to 5 guitar parts. The delay pedal on the solo sounds pretty cool.
The sad thing is that Bonham died just as the band was rejuvinated and ready to tour again. This song, and several others that I have heard from this tour stand as a testament of this.
this would have to be jimmy page's hardest live song to play. He loves the challenge and it brings out the best of him..hard to beleive he only had a single guitar for this live performance..un matchable! he his a freak on guitar..
At least put up a picture from the 1980 Tour Over Europe instead of a photo from the 1977 Tour in America... That way the people who sit for the 9 minutes and 14 seconds looking at their PC screen can imagine what it was like to see them as well as hear them during this very show/tour.
Just a suggestion from a long time Mighty Blimp fan,
He was doing much better by 80, 77-79 were forgettable years for Jimmy, but was faring much better against his addiction by 80. Sadly, before he could return to normal, the band was done :(
Unbelievable to find this version on you tube...i was there that evening in Ahoy...this song was one of the highlights.....thanks for posting this gordonroyal! How you ever got hold of this?
they should continue, and grow up, leaving the drugs and alcohol before a bad thing happened, just like bonham case, i tink that paul jones, page, and plant, would continue for the bonham memorie...
So sad Bonzo was gone a few months later on 9/25. They don't make them like this anymore. Never will. If it weren't for Jimmy I wouldn't have picked up the guitar and brought the beauty of playing that instrument into my life. They have been with me all my life, death, divorce, happy and sad times (good times/bad times) and their songs always find different meanings and new light that help to guide, Happy b-day to RP tomorrow. Long live Zeppelin
simply amazing, next to trampled underfoot, this is my fav zep song, great live version to-- love it, and i agree with grajdrums, no the same without the best drummer to ever hit the kit
Dude, I've listened to the new records, like "No Quarter" with Page and Plant. Without Sir John Bonham, Zep is not the same. Even his own son is missing something that his father had... In my opinion, they couldn't have continued without Bonham. R.I.P.
He took ill a few days or weeks after this during a Berlin show in early July.. Simon Kirke sat in or do I have that wrong. One of their last shows. Yes.. alcohol and drug abuse took this band down for the count after the misfortune of Plant's accident and losing his son. The lifestyle was completely out of control and Page would be out of commission for years after this. Had they outlived the drugs and wildness 1981 tour would still be talked about today!
Such an interesting song.... page was obviously working some kind of univibe, or phaser with his foot during this take.... sounds cool. He used few effects on record, seemed to experiment more with the songs live....thanks Jimmy! And hey thanks for posting this, one of the best songs ever recorded..... and just listen to Bonham!
That's becasue we can't post the good videos because it's "copyright infringement" so we have to find the not published stuff wich sounds bad just to play it at all. That's fricking stupid.
ik was ook bij het consert in 1975,maar kan niks vinden op youtube

As much as I dig Zeppelin, I have to take umbrage with you and say the Beatles still reign mightily over all in terms of influence and appeal.

Does anyone know how well Jimmy's health was by 1980? Was he doing better then his 1977 and 1979 tours? Was Heroin still a big thing to him?
Killinfloor 2 years ago
I think 77 was his low point, and it improved in 79.... dunno about 80 tho...
MrPinkZeppelin 2 years ago
He was doing much better by 80, 77-79 were forgettable years for Jimmy, but was faring much better against his addiction by 80. Sadly, before he could return to normal, the band was done :(

I think this is my favorite live version of the song. Most of the others somehow seem to lose the heavy power of the original.

Way better than Knebworth

The Zurich recording on this tour is my favourite ALS version.
They became more experienced during the years
performing this song.
Page puts too much delay on his solo.
Bonzo picks up quite some tempo from minute 5 on

i really love this song.. one of my led zeppelin favorites :)
lisa5989 2 years ago 2
they should continue, and grow up, leaving the drugs and alcohol before a bad thing happened, just like bonham case, i tink that paul jones, page, and plant, would continue for the bonham memorie...

It's very hard to believe later that year Bonham passed away an there's no more zep T.T...

I meant less than 4 months later Bonzo died. Sorry. 9/25/80

And hey thanks for posting this, one of the best songs ever recorded..... and just listen to Bonham!

what the heck everything that is a led zeppelin song on youtube has become bad quality lately its frikin stupid
skatecross27 2 years ago 2
That's becasue we can't post the good videos because it's "copyright infringement" so we have to find the not published stuff wich sounds bad just to play it at all. That's fricking stupid.
briemkiki827 2 years ago
that sucks... why does the law have to try ruin everything?
