Hey gimme: Make a video about the crime rate in Japan and how it compares to other countries. Many people have the wrong idea that the crime rate in japan is high, which, of course, is far from reality.
A few drops do not make a rain. There is crime everywhere. You can always find some tragic episode anywhere in the world like Germany, recently. Do no mix family kidnappings with regular crime. You have to make similar comparisons. I know Japan first hand (and Switzerland). In the USA (and many other countries), will you sleep with the doors unlocked?

They DIDN'T knock at his apartment door - he came out to go to his gym wearing no shoes, saw police and ran. These facts are VERY well known - do a fact check before posting things.

Japan has still one of the lowest crime rate in the world, although Korean crime rate in japan is quite high, more than 10 times higher than japanese. I'd forgotten how he originially came into contact with Hawker. Thanks for filling in the details. You didn't mention the one picture they had of him from the night when his coworkers convinced him to go out to karaoke or something, and he ducked behind someone else as the picture was snapped. You'd think his odd, reclusive behavior would have caught more attention, but I guess there are a lot of guys like that in Japan.

about every other suspect.. police brutallity is quite high in the US. People think taking a stance of underestimating the problems we deal with is a good approach. Let me tell you that it's a shitty approach that's right on the edge of someone being in denial of the problem itself. Police brutallity is a HUGE problem in the US, and it's very rare that a police officer is held accountable. Its very common to see a police officer get paid leave in these cases even when they're national!
I disagree that it's very rare for officers to be held accountable. I don't want to get into numbers, but off the top of my head I can recall numerous officers being put on trial for cases of abuse. This is something that's not taken lightly anymore. I think we've made great improvements over the last 10 years. While brutality still exists, I think it has significantly decreased.

Sorry but I'm against that proposal. The more you marginalize the more they're likely to relapse into their habit of violent crime in order to survive. This is the case in the US. There is a reason why if someone is convicted then they're chances of finding work lowers and thus they go back to crime to support themselves and get back into jail. We quite literally have a different world if you have ever seen a prison. I think this is a huge problem if we do what u suggest it makes things worse.

You don't have several facts right.
He saw her on a train and followed her home on her bike - he DIDN'T respond to an ad. The police officers who went to his door DIDN'T take off their shoes - you have confused the facts - a total of 9 officers were waiting at his building some on his floor, and more below. They DIDN'T knock at his apartment door - he came out to go to his gym wearing no shoes, saw police and ran. These facts are VERY well known - do a fact check before posting things.

Those points are not really the point of the video though, and not "well known", a subjective word. None of my students knew that. Did you know he was the fastest runner in his high school? Does it matter?

I'm very happy this creep is in custody, maybe more so as a British student in Japan.
What happens now is the issue. I have a horrible feeling that he will only get done for "abandoning the body", will be handed a 6 year sentence, and be out on parole in 2 or 3 years. This has happened before, in the case of Hiroshi Nozaki, who was let loose after the first murder to go on to commit another.
Japan only punishes these sickos properly if they're foreign and their victims are Japanese.

Wow! I'm glad he is caught. I heard about this story in the news, maybe a year or so ago. Sad, what has happend to this lady. I guess she thought that since she was in Japan, nothing bad would of happend to her. This just goes to show, you have to be careful where ever you go.

Japan has still one of the lowest crime rate in the world, although Korean crime rate in japan is quite high, more than 10 times higher than japanese. The guy who killed Lucy Blackman was also Korean. Korean tend to work in Pachinko industry and prostitution, and send money from these industry to North Korea for nuclear weapons development. so sad

Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Switzerland may be even better or a close second. I feel very safe in Japan, in any city and anywhere. The yakuza don't bother the people.

I'd forgotten how he originially came into contact with Hawker. Thanks for filling in the details. You didn't mention the one picture they had of him from the night when his coworkers convinced him to go out to karaoke or something, and he ducked behind someone else as the picture was snapped. You'd think his odd, reclusive behavior would have caught more attention, but I guess there are a lot of guys like that in Japan.

British or Americans have no right to say anything in comparison to the police in all over the world the Japanese are still the best they have the highest rate of solved crimes.
It really goes to show how stuck up Brits and Americans are when they are in a foreign land compared to any other culture. And of course this is a blanket statement and only true half of the time (before anyone scolds me)

well I would agree with you, but you sound like one of those people who goto JApan, and find themselves to be better than the other foreigners.Possibly take pride in having more japanese friends than your foreign counter-parts, and maybe you know phrases and terms that are completely useless,but you know them.But I don't know you so you aren't like that.But yea your statement has some truth to it,but I found that european countries also tend to have these atittudes, and same with other cultures.

A large majority of Americans, Australians, and Europeans I ran into outside their country look for things to knock down that other country and act like it doesn't happen in their country.
Look into crime rates Japan has one of the lowest crime rates and the best crime investigation. I guarantee he wouldn't be saying what he is if that was the U.K. about the police.

I've been to foreign countries, and yea I've occasionally ran into Americans. Some were as you described, and others were quite the opposite trying to avoid the stereotype you are propogating... I think you can't use huge generalizations like that. I know Japan has low crime rates. I lived in Japan. I know their police departments in Japan are top class man. I've lived in Japan. Hell I'm going back to Japan. My God I hate it when people assume they know me, or assume we are in conflict.

A few horribly tragic incidents over the last few decades don't make for a horribly flawed police system. When it does happen its horrible, but let's be real it isn't as bad as all that. This is also coming from a minority living in NYC.

lol I'm a minority living in the US ,and the things police get away with in certain cities does make for an incompetent law enforcement department, and lets not get started on the legal system. I think NYC has improved over the last few decades... Japan doesn't have the same issues as the US does with violent crime... Atleast when I was living there. Which wasn't so long ago soo yea.

about every other suspect.. police brutallity is quite high in the US. People think taking a stance of underestimating the problems we deal with is a good approach. Let me tell you that it's a shitty approach that's right on the edge of someone being in denial of the problem itself. Police brutallity is a HUGE problem in the US, and it's very rare that a police officer is held accountable. Its very common to see a police officer get paid leave in these cases even when they're national!

I disagree that it's very rare for officers to be held accountable. I don't want to get into numbers, but off the top of my head I can recall numerous officers being put on trial for cases of abuse. This is something that's not taken lightly anymore. I think we've made great improvements over the last 10 years. While brutality still exists, I think it has significantly decreased.

I've been advising the creation of felon-free regions which would ban anyone convicted of a violent crime, so we would never bump into a guy like that if he gets out of jail.

Sorry but I'm against that proposal. The more you marginalize the more they're likely to relapse into their habit of violent crime in order to survive. This is the case in the US. There is a reason why if someone is convicted then they're chances of finding work lowers and thus they go back to crime to support themselves and get back into jail. We quite literally have a different world if you have ever seen a prison. I think this is a huge problem if we do what u suggest it makes things worse.
