I think this is my top favorite song of hers. I just discovered this version of the song. I borrowed some cassette tapes from my grandmother and found whatever live recording this is. It also had what I believe is an earlier version of Don't Explain. "This is another song that I wrote. I do hope you like it." she says, ooozing with class :) Up til now, I've only had best of, or gold collections album of Lady Day. Time to start some REAL collecting.
STILL in love with this music and this song. There is a willow tree on 9th st in New York that I visit from time to time and it makes me want to cry. It's huge. The branches go from the yard in the block, all the way into the street. When you look up at it at night, smh the feeling is remarkable. I wish I could bring all of you to see it one night. I will get married under one one day. "willow weep for meeeee". OMG I LOVE THIS SONG
billieholidayonline i love you! it's really the first time i'm listening to these recordings should have been in 51 or 52 it's a great day for me thanx a thousand times
though I am only 22, I am in love with music like this. I wish there was somewhere I could go and listen to music like this in New York. Someone needs to open up a spot like this, I would always be there. Maybe I'll do that ha
@DajaWaja Yes, I was actually walking around in the village with a friend and happened to find a small restaurant who had live jazz playing. We went in and fell in love with a group called "The Bill Murray Experience". If you get a chance, look them up. They were amazing.
@twinronda You go girl. I love to hear when your generation appreciates the old standard classics. That's awesome. Let us know when you get it open...and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it.
@Harky1951 awwww thank you so much. I love going to my grandmas house. We could hear classic music from outside the window (this way we know she's home). Music that (quite often) is only on LPs or Records. We just sit in quiet while she sings and we want to ask her "ooo grandma who sings this one?" ha, but we don't want to interupt.
I'll never let anyone tell me I can't do it and you gave me the push I needed to continue on wanted to open up my own business. Thank you soooo much Pamela =)!!!!!
@Harky1951 haha thank you Pamela. I will def go for it. I'm moving to GA next year so hopefully opening up a bar lounge will be a little easier. I just finished college and I'm going back to get a second degree so I'm very focused.
@twinronda there are a lot of your peers in nyc that share the same appreciation for these tunes, maybe one day there will be a place we can go to enjoy the sounds of old
@richeyelens I sure hope so. Jazz music feeds my soul. I've been walking around soho in NY lately and I'm really surprised at the amount of Jazz spots I have run into. It's great. Live bands.
Hi, you can listen to jazz every Saturday eve at St. Nick's jazz pub before 11 p.m. and probably most any night, though they do change it up quite a bit. 149th St. & St. Nicholas Ave., Harlem, NY. Where Billy Holiday once sang along with all the other great performers from her time til the present. Enjoy!
@CreativeWorksTM1 Oh thank you very much. I will surely check that place out. I grew up very close to that area so it won't be a problem finding it. Thanx a bunch
@twinronda are you serious? New York is still the jazz capital of the world... go check out your local listing and see the plethora of jazz venues that have music exactly like this. Smalls, Smoke, Fat Cat, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, etc etc... I live in Canada and I know these names off the top of my head... you clearly haven't gone outside if you seriously think they're a lack of jazz in NYC
@hanzle haha very true. I went walking around in the village a while back and stumbled across a hole in the wall. We were walking passed it and we saw three people in front of the place. A blind fat black man with beautiful nappy hair and suspenders, a pretty quiet white lady and a fat white guy with long black hair. The black guy looked like he came straight from the 80's. I loved him. They told us to come back and they....blew...us...away. I MUST find the name of the band. I was stuck on them.
@twinronda ? Age has nothing to do with it, I've been listening to Frank Sinatra sing this song since before I was ten. These musicians are timeless. Fortunately for you, there are plenty of great singers in New York who were inspired by this same genre. UNfortunately, there's a ton of terrible singers out there that you'll have to sit through while you wait to find a good one, but it can certainly be worth it. Just keep trying--lots of clubs out there.
@etristram You're right. I can literally be on my laptop for 5 hours straight listening to different music til I come across something that touches my soul and then I'll know it was all worth it. I don't know what these so called artist think they are doing nowadays. It's very disappointing.
@twinronda my friend&former colleague lisa leilani kekaula vennum and i (sometimes with a trio) used to play this in a coffee shop in palm springs in the early 90's. and we did the music justice. this was before garage band and cheap at home digital recording unfortunately or i could prove it.check your local paper entertainment section. if you live in Cali,ChIcago ,ny LA seattle(maybe not in all small towns)you'll find good jazz musicians& singers performing i.e. darryl rowe in san francisco.
@markmarktarmann wow that's great. I'm sure I'd fall in love in that coffee shop haha. ugh digital recording. I'm so over all of it haha I truly wish I was old enough to notice my love for Jazz music in the 90's. I was born in 87 =(. I'm moving to GA next year. I pray I find some Jazz spots. I don't know much about GA so I hope I'm in for a pleasant surprise. I'm currently in love with Raul Midon. You MUST check him out. If you know of any spots in GA, PLEASE let me know.
@accursedseraphim Man you don't know how I search for this song, it's been like 30 minuted i'm searching on google and youtube to find the sampled for hanabi. I finally got it. Thank you i'm glad that i've seen your post. At least i'm not the only one ;-)

Why does everybody feel the need to state their age at the start of their comment? Yes, you're young and you like this music - do you want a medal?
