This is called "a musical joke" due to the fact of it's repeating and uneventful melody with a lacking since of power in it's harmony. Mozart was trying to make the point that lots of composer were doing the same thing over and over in a piece. He was disappointed in the works of the time and lazy composers
It is kind of funny, but not if you think about it. I was listening to it in the background, and found myself going "Uhhhh" in disgust a few times. Once I thought about it, it was pretty funny that this was exactly the response he was trying to elicit.
some believe he wrote it for his pet starling who had died a month before, mimicking the absurd mimicry of the bird. also, the final movement of his piano concerto in g major is thought to have been modeled after a refrain sung by the bird. he had written in his ledger about the purchase of the bird, which included five measures and 17 notes with the comment, "das war schon!" (that was beautiful!)
I would just like to point out that Mozart might have written it to be humorous as a satire of the conventions of the time. It, in my opinion is the foreshadowing of more modern classical music. Note the slightly dissonant sounds and the awkward instrumentation. This was unheard of in Mozart's time, but I could definitely picture Prokofiev or Stravinsky performing it.
This is a parody of the product of low skilled composers and players of his time. It's quite funny, if you are familiar enough with the compositions of the major composers of that time. It loses some of its effect if you have listened to it too much, and then you are just listening to poorly composed music, even if done purposefully, such as here.
@19ZeldaLover95 I think it deliberately does all the things Mozart's father told him not to do as he was growing up. My opinion is that it must have been a reaction to the death of his father, who died just before writing this. The end of part 4 is so bad it even sounds like he's giving a two finger sign to his dad. Very sad actually.
@GayzeStarr There seems to be at least 3 interpretations:
1. That it was a rebellious/bitter statement following the death of his father, who left him little in the will (Leopold, a meticulous musician, always demanded his son write "precise" music)
2. As a mini service for his pet starling, complete w/ eulogy
3. As a sarcastic musical parody, to show the faults of mediocre musicians w/ all of it's screwy formula, odd counterpoint, etc. (This is probably the most accurate, methinks.)
@cazonetta His own journal notes did make mention that it was written "in starling style". As the "Mommy" (which they call me, by the way, they speak English at least as well as any parrot) of several pet Starlings myself, I will stick by Mozart's own notations. LOL
Hehe, it's funny how this piece contains more complexity still then your average contemporary popular piece of musical drivel which are mostly more of a joke then this is.
Yeah I get it, this is very repetitive compared to his other material and evokes no emotion in me.

I think the joke isn't that it lacks complexity, but that the complexity doesn't flow together well to form a uniform piece.

The massive repitition is the most obvious parody and pauses are at the end of the 4 measures which is a horrible thing to do throughout the piece.

Mozart actually composed this piece in honor of his pet starling, who had just died, and indicated that it was written in "a starling style".
