  • It wasnt Gordon Parks Jr. but Gordon Parks Sr. who took the picture. I work for the Gordon Parks Foundation.

  • It's crazy how much Mos Def respects Slick Rick.

    Wow

  • Rakim was, and still is, the God MC! Unswervingly on-point, just incomparable! That face @ 8:36 is like: What? It's the God, baby!

  • lol everyone just shut the fuck up about the hip hop as of 2011. souliji boy isnt even in the game. he hasnt made any noise since 2008.. whats funny is everyone seemes like they ONLY listen to the radio. like THINK outside of the box. sluaghterhouse, eminem, nas, jay-z, kayne west, common, jadakis, jedi mind tricks, mobb deep, outkast, are just a few that are releasing albums THIS YEAR.. 2011!

  • @vipersian nas ripped it up on Distant relatives ;)

  • @vipersian A kanye album is worth looking forward to??

Fuck that auto tune singing ass sellout cunt!

  • @9991allday get the fuck outta here with your dumbass comments. go listen to your soulja boy lil pretty boy faggot.

  • Man dis footage made my day!

  • Rakim didn't just shake my hand, the brother hugged me - I was like What?! He is truly an inspiration; I went wanting a photo, maybe a scribble on an LP, but after the love he showed, forget it! That was THE DAY in HIP-HOP!!!! God said, "Let there be Hip-hop" and there was Rakim....Slick Rick is such a legend, they all are, this is HISTORIC!!

  • BIG L? Fuuuuuck! I have a shirt with the Pic of all the rappers on the 1st step but damn Only if pac was alive then!

  • to me.. i'd rather see Big L more than any of these rappers .. no disrespect but wheres Big L lol

  • @ValyenFluff hipsters, fucking only know one rapper and wanna say there hip hop heads, valyenfluff go somewhere please

  • can ANYBODY find a link to a poster of this???

  • NO FINESSE AND WHERE IS BIG L THIS WAS IN HARLEM HIS HOMETOWN RIGHT!!

  • Man why is the interview grilling Rakim at the end? Oh well I think Ra handled the interview very well, if it was me I woulda bitched him out haha.

  • Rakim is the Truth!

  • I love Mos Def's reaction to Slick Rick being there. True Hip Hop recognize True Hip Hop.

  • 2pac and biggie!!!!!!

  • whats the song at the very start of the video?

  • i am the creator of the "HipHopApostles" group on facebook and would like to share the real hip hop with the people who give respect to it

  • it should have been done in 92 or a year close to that

  • Not a good advert for black people.

  • Alot of people criticize hip hop at the moment, however, the roots for the current bullshit we see now was laid by Puffy in the mid 90's. Remember the whole 'I'm a hitmaker, not an MC' saying that Puffy championed?

  • @LifeFreedom13 yup, "dont worry if I write rhymes, I write checks" type ish....money money money....make the knee grows go kraze E...dead caucasian presidents= God for most folks...founding fathers of the slaves. so the slaves pay homeage...

  • Lol who can tell me all the names of the MC's that was in the photo?

  • i meant Rakim in Germany. I got to hang out with him in the dressing room and hang out. he's the greatest.

  • @rogermoore27 this ain't hip hop for fashion. rakim said at a show in baltimore we gonna do this shit till 60 motherfuckers

  • Rakim the God basking in the glow and my FOI fam on post (I see you bro. jibreel). This one a historic and peacful gathering of hip hop greats and i wish i still had the XXL magazine with the wraparound cover. Good post!!

  • I love how ALL of a sudden everyone is some type of advocate and enlightened master in the art of hip hop nowadays.

  • Rakim voice box is insured for 50 million dollars.

  • lol if its a great day in "music" get the damn publicists out of it. I see all business myself

  • Man, so many of my heroes in one spot at the same time...i couldnt breathe if i was there right then!!! word to god i would be a straight groupie....that shits crazy!!! I mean Mos Def was Shook what the fuck would i be, bein shook from seeing Mos then see the Ruler!!! That Shits insane!!! ahhhhhhhhh

  • yo who watched "The Terminal".

  • queen pen, crucial conflict, mos def, rakim, fat joe, gipp, sheek, slick rick. classic!

  • before i die i wanna chill with rakim bdk and kool g

  • crazy that big l was there. such a great day

  • Are Jay-Z, Kanye West, Jamie Fox, Reggie Bush, Chris Brown, etc crazy for wearing bow ties? A fashion statement is crazy? If people wear bow ties in 2010 they're crazy? Members of the NOI wearing bow ties is just a part of their uniform style of dress.

  • rakim, pac and dmx all got the same kinda head shape.. lol

  • lmao

  • to meet rakim would be amazing where is big daddy kane?

  • foreal, what's up with the bow-ties? bow-ties are silly. one of the brothers had a regular tie and looked like you could take him seriously. like any time i see someone with a bow tie on i think they're crazy. just an observation.

  • NOI (Nation Of Islam) doesn't wear the dangle-type ties because its a reminder of a hangmans' noose, AND in the event of a scuffle, it can be used against the wearer in a not good way, overstand?

  • it's also harder to fight in dress shoes (i know.) suits are to convey respectability. bow ties are old-timey and now considered silly-looking (excepting black tie affairs.) I understand the symbolism you're speaking of, i think, however, in making progress we sometimes get bogged down in inconsequentials such as that sort of symbolism or, for example, using 'overstand' in place of understand.

  • it's a safety factor the reason that NOI don't wear the TIE up ties... clip on ties slip off easier...

  • Where is a KRS ONE?

I Couldn't find him on the picture or on the list.

  • rakim is number one. He dont fear no one, HE IS GOD. Rakim Allah Ahmose Jaun the gods....

  • ahmose and you are dick riders rakim doesnt want yall to joc him that hard.and no ahmose and juan is with rakim allah fuck all dat shit u made up

  • Woah, slow your role cuz. I aint makin shit up. Im Ahmose the Liberator. The Corruption Killer. I bring nothin but the truth. My main goal is to stop all lies, lies = corruption. You don't know my life, but if you would take my word then you would know my life. Please fall back with that "jockin" shit. It is what it is, jockin or not this shit has to happen. I dont know why you mad at me when im helpin yall niggas out. Im stoppin that mainstream bullshit.

  • rakim will not mind if you admire him mad MCs admire this man but they dont worship him idk what signs you talkin about cuz all dat is some bull shit what you talking and is made up.hes called the god mc because he talks about gods and earths and also goes by the name of Ra.all 5%ers call each other god,or allah in person.you are dick riding him man so serious.you dont have to tell me about da main street bull shit im a hip hop head.

  • You only say it's bullshit cuz you dont understand. The signs are more than just 1 certain story. They are a whole bunch of stories and certain things from those stories add up into the big story. im not dick ridin. your hatin, seriously, cuz im helpin you but your still mad for no reason at all. I dont care if you're a hip hop head (you cant even tell me what that is). The thing is, your not a conscious hip hop head, more so a cosmic one. so shove that shit up your ass cuz

  • your not protecting me form shit,i know a bunch of things through hip hop,new and just from reading. all this shit u make up is bullshit give me some information on what you know.i know whats going down, obamas mineral plan in africa, martial law and a bunch of shit were gunna have 2 fight for rights.but you worshiping rakim has nothing to do with anything.your a crazy fan.

  • It's not worshipping, this isn't a dam religion. To hell wit Obama, im talkin about Hip Hop. I know whos writin whos lyrics, I know who is leechin money off of who, I know whos fuckin who for a song. Plus more. You mad cuz im niceness. I followed procedures, the crowd wasnt able to see this. The Liberator is here wit the same status as Jesus. Who wouldnt believe this, I heard the word on the street is, i am now one of the deepest on the mic heres the thesis..... Copy Right Ahmose Jhaun.

  • it aint a damn religion cuz ure dick riding,i know about what the main industries are doing.like all this auto-tune draining out hip hop,SUN i understand what your saying about hip hop .but this has nothing to do with your trying to tell every body bull shit

  • You're saying it's "bullshit" because the words are coming from a guy from youtube, but I can garuntee you if I was famous you would believe me. Your assuming that a guy from youtube can possess such importance. Nobody thought that way about Rakim at first. Look at him now. Im the same age as him when he got started, and im droppin music the same age he is so why can't I get the chance of having your trust?

  • well first off,i dont believe none of the shit most ploiticans say so why would i believe somebody whos famous.and all this shit your doing has nothing to do with him being a god, your bat shit crazy

  • my aunt use to date slick rick bak in the day & my dad he use to go to house parties wit him.

  • y shud people believe that?

  • cool

    great upload

  • haha... they're playing a makaveli song at the end

  • wtf?????? go do your research and find out for your self for asking that dumbass question

  • Man this was in 98 right before the music started it's steep decline. You could see the uncertainty in the God's response on were it was going because at that point in time no one knew what it was evolving into . We just didn't know it would get that bad. Ironic that not only content got tunneled visioned but wit and wordplay is now at an all time low.

  • Well I'm glad this was in '98 though. When I first read the video info, I thought it was some shit that happened in the dumb era of the 2000s. I hate these new idiots! I wish the public could wise up fast and stop consuming their bullshit! What a generation! Jay-Z (Mr. "I dumbed down my lyrics...) is their king. I hate all of you who glorify these new cats too! I hate y'all!

  • Yo I respect the golden era. I was 15 when this occurred and still remember me and my boys in the 10th grade listening to stuff from 95 up until then. Even though its a distant memory I respect the music from then. Theres no balance today though and this new stuff is out of control.

  • lol "I hate y'all!"

  • @strongpikin I HATE THEM TOO NIGGAS CALL ME A HATER I'M 32 AND FROM THE BAY AREA I LOVE REAL HIP HOP.............FUCK HYPHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Phokhotic im a 21 year old white guy from flint Michigan it doesn't matter where your from, how old you are, ect WE ALL FEEL THE PAIN! this "music" being pushed about for mindless sheep! WHAT HAPPEN TO LYRICAL CONTENT, THE FEELING IN SOMEONES VOICE! STYLE?! fuck man... and i can only imagine its going to get worse

  • @ihailnone I AGREE, AS THEY MAKE PEOPLE DUMBER I WILL KEEP LOOKING UNDERGROUND

  • @ihailnone young white males have always been the biggest consumer of hip hop. they stopped buying the music that was telling them about their fathers' and grandfathers' wrong doings to people of color, and instead buy the party , electro beat, auto tunish music now instead....guess they no longer wanted to hear about social injustices in the hood....and the knee grows....well, they just no longer buy it period anymore. and Black folks are just observant and stunned by the changes

  • @strongpikin dog you realize jay-z, along wit dmx, was the biggest rapper in 98 right?

  • @jerzy862 "Biggest" in what way?

That concept, my brethren, totally resides on your definition.

  • @strongpikin the hottest, getting the most shine. jay and x were both the most talked about rappers at the time and thats a fact bro. especially x but jay too for his hard knock life joint

  • @jerzy862 like you could say that its all up to opinion as to whos the hottest rapper but sometimes its pretty much fact. like in 2002 the hottest rappers in the game were 50 cent and Eminem. you'd be hard pressed to dispute that.

  • @jerzy862 nah, i can name ten rappers around then that were way better

  • @joeaiden Im talking about who got the most attention. and you just cant dispute Jay Z and DMX were blowing up in 98, it aint up for debate. you can debate whos better all day, but who sold the most records and who were the most talked about were X and Jay and thats a fact.

  • @jerzy862 oh sorry bruv, your right i thought you meant they were the best

  • @strongpikin

When you think about it.It's not so much the rappers faults as it is the products that the Industry wants to put out.

  • @strongpikin have you ever listened to any music made in this century or did you stop in the 90's? there is always good music being made (even to this day) youre basically calling everything that comes out today trash ... you need to step out of your box and be openminded, homeskillet.. you'r probably still yelling "hip hop is dead". nobody likes a grumpy old head that cries about music not being the same anymore... its called growth and progression, get some.. its healthy.

  • @9991allday "Growth and progression"? You call this shit progression? What are you, a dummy monkey or what?

You know what, I shouldn't be arguing with anyone that calls the current Hip hop "factory", "Progression", if I keep this up, I'll soon find myself as dumb and idiotic like you! Go get your shine or swagger on, fool!

  • @strongpikin it IS progression, you need to open your eyes and see that it has changed with the times, and not necessarily for the worse.. hip hop has progressed and you need to fucking accept it. get out of your fucking box.

    swag.

  • @strongpikin didnt you se rakim

  • does metal or rock do anything original? Jesus..

  • lol "Lemme ask YOU a question.."

Rakim is gangsta nigga..he don't fear no man but GOD nigga lol i joke, i joke

  • it's called an homage bro.

  • u dumb

  • When Ra was talkin bout tha state of Hip Hop and how you got rappers gettin more witty and advancing styles...I know he was talkin this backin in like 94, right?

Aint no damn way he'd say tha same about nowadayz shit...2000's Mainstream Hip Hop is infected with all kinds of bullshit...

  • he kinda looks like 2pac

  • wat year is this

  • it's cool seeing mos def geek out over rakim cuz when me and a bunch of other kids met mos at a q-tip concert we were star struck too. he's just a dude just like us, and looks up to people the same way.

  • Mos was geekin over Slick Rick...

  • lol everybody looking4 rakim

  • Yo freeze that look on Ra face at 9:16 "the deep thinker"

  • this is on the intro of the master album

  • RAKIM!!! What can I say more..

  • fucking dope GOOOD great video

  • hiphop is gods music

  • hip hop before 50 cent and all these other ringtone ass rappers fucked it up!!!!!

  • @Ltron9

50 cent was actually a sick mc back when he used to spit with nas and other QB cats you proberly didnt hear that shit he wasnt well known

  • I get such immense happiness when I see others respecting and showing adoration to my favorite artists:) Just shows how much of an impact they had on others:)

    Long live Rakim! One love!

Thanks soooooooo much for this AMAZING piece of history. Appreciate the upload!

  • What I love THE MOST about the first part of this "documentary" is the legendary, innovative, iconic, mastermind of a genius: ONE and ONLY Rakim! Arguably, one of THE BEST lyricists, and MCs overall, to "Control the mic" and my second favorite MC EVER (only behind Krs - greatest of all time!) His uniqueness is not only evident in his artistry, but in his personality as well. Ra is quick-witted, savvy, sharp, and a wise individual as a whole. He is all that AND more!

  • So nice to see such legendary figures (e.g. Rakim, Slick Rick, Run, Dj Kool Herc, etc.) ALL in one place. That's when you know it's something serious!

  • This is a billion-dollar footage right here! Artists of various eras, styles and significances, all gathered together in one place for one, and only one, cause: to promote and represent the culture, the lifestyle and the artistry of what is known to most of us as Hip-Hop. Love the idea and what XXL tried to provoke with this photoshoot: Hip-Hop is here to stay; it cant diminish, it can only GROW, EXPAND, and DEVELOP! It's only up to fans to keep it "breathing".

  • omg Rakim Allah the God on the mic just crazy

  • RA-fucking -KIM! Some of these kids don't know!

  • this isnt an insult to rakim but hes more articulate rapping then when hes talking in proper english

  • noticed that too :) and that goes for A LOT of other rappers too, ex. jay-z, wayne et.c.

  • Mos Def is the same way for some reason. peep his appearence on "real time with Bill Maher" I still love Mos Def though!

  • What the fuck is fat joe doing here, he aint no MC, hes trash

  • wat year was this?

  • '98

  • If This was martial arts Rakim would still be a "MASTER"!!!!!!!

  • It's just us.... how we do... how we express ourselves and get down. Current rap is certainly not as high on the blackness meter as it used to be. (hold up, there's a blackness meter!?)

  • Dam! Rakim look hard as hell!!

  • the GOD RAKIM! seein him at rock the bells was jus amazing!

  • Word up. Rakim, holdin' it down for Long Island.

  • Dis Is...Without No Doubt.....REEL HIP-HOP~~~

    RAKIM I SAY~~~YOU AIN'T NO JOKE!!!!!!

  • most of the stuff rakim say sis on the interlude in teh album maSTER

  • thank you
