I love this song so sweet and oh so filled with passion , though it maybe quiet passion but it is passion, sweet and gentle thanks so for letting me find this
Worked on a show with this guy about seven years ago. He showed up early and tuned all the guitars, replacing a couple strings as necessary—and not just his, the whole band's, basses too. I thought, "Damn, this guy is his own backline crew." I'm sure if the bass drum had needed a new skin that night, he would've seen to that as well.
Then he drank a cranberry juice or something and rocked the place for about 2 hours. He's a real pro, and a very unassuming, down to earth, do-it-yourself type.
Crooners like Johnnie Rivers make todays musical groups blush in embarassment at their lack of talent even with digital technology to make them sound good in the studio and live...Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Ma.
great memories--my buddies and I in Nassau for xmas. Every little bar played this song over and over--we slept on the beach for 2 nights and then in the lobby of a sleezy hotel on the wrong side of town. What fun!
Dan O sounds like you are catching on to Johnny. I have been into him since I was a little kid. I was 5 when he broke out. He was the first to play the legendary Whisky. My single mom would go see him there all the time. Stars use to go. I started seeing him live in my mid teens. He is so good of an artist. He takes a song and arranges it for him. If you get the chance see him live. Incredible! Meet him many times. Ah the Summer Rain...beautiful rock song!
it's the same way...but the sound isn't...the valvul record player fron 1960 have a great sound.....like electric guitar amplifier...better sound...but i love crosley
Thanks for post..about every five years I run across this song and remember its my favorite Johnny Rivers tune..then I ask myself how I could possibly forget that once again!! Maybe it'll stick this time..thanks for the reminder.
This song is beyond big...I'm completely blown away by this 1960's survivor - Mr. Johnnie Rivers. If only Jimmy Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Janice Joplin and many others could have survived...Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Mass.
To all of my friends from the 1960's era..Remember the many hours we'd spend in my room up stairs in Winter Harbor and listen to this album? I still LOVE IT!! Only more..because of you!
good call...I never thought of it as a paean to the 60's, but it so is! Now I'll appreciate it even more...as a song I love, but also a touchstone to my cildhood in the 60's!
Love this gorgeous song from Johnny Rivers.... It made the Top 15 back on 1/6/68....when the #1 song that same week was ''Hello Goodbye'' by the Beatles... I love the songs from way back in early part of 1968...when I got very interested in meteorology, astronomy and oceanography. BTW..Belinda Carlisle also hit with ''Summer Rain'' in March 1990..... cool chart trivla ...eh??
forgot to ask if maybe you could play "do what you gotta do off this album" so I can hear it? The way you played this one. then I could keep it on my computer., Thanks
my favorite song on this album was "do what you gotta do". I had this album when I was 16. Been looking for it forever to buy it. You can't find it anywhwere.
Happy 40th Anniversary to "Summer Rain!" It topped the billboards at #14 in 1968! Hard to believe it's been that long! The song was also performed by Johnny Rivers at the Monterey Pop festival during the summer of love!
Yes, I turned 16 on 6.6.68 and just got my driver licenses. Whatever became of Johnny? Is he alive today? Does anyone know??? I had all his albums.....God Bless him
Wow! This song has generated a lot of buzz! I was really just showing off the phonograph machine... as it stands, I have played the phonograph for 34000 people already!
I heard this song on "10 at 10", a syndicated oldies show one day in about 1995, and I said. "Damn that was a cool ol tune- so I went home and made my own version on electric guitar that sounded kinda Hendrixy- I even put baxward bass and rgythm on it. Then I researched te tune a bit- weirdly, it was written by a country songwriter named James Hendrix.! No relation to Jimi- u can hear my attempt partway thru the video I posted above. Enjoy!
gotta be one of the top ten songs of that era....and only Johnny Rivers could sing it, just like nobody can sing Bobby Darin's songs but Darin, really.
I saw Johhny Rivers perform this song at a concert in Melbourne, FL last summer, and he was as good as ever. This is a precious song and is quite touching. Long live Johnny!
great song and album.. with all the videos about Big Sur cant believe that no one has put "going back to big sur" on youtube.. i think its on the same album ..
Wow, great song. Having only heard it on the radio, it took me a bloody long time to find out what it was, since the only words I could recognize were, 'kept on playing Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.' Recognizing the voice as Johnny Rivers didn't help too much, 'till now.
Good song, but owes quite a bit to Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina", which I believe came first.

James Hendrix was a folk singer in the early '60's in a group called "The Mugwumps" with Cass Elliot, she later of the Mommas and the Poppas.
