I don't get why this says "vegans beware". Vegans are the LAST people who have to think about this stuff - as our focus is primarily on fresh fruits and vegetables. Yogurt, ice cream, and lasagna would never enter our plates.
@amytothegrace: Ideally we choose the fresh fruits and vegetables over the processed stuff in cans and packages, agreed, ... yet that's not the reality for all. It's an alert for those who don't eat any animal products yet still derive a portion of their diet from processed foods which may contain this 'ingredient'.
Vegans don't have to be any more aware of using products derived from insects than from ANY other animal-derived item they buy. Also, if it's got the Vegan Society registered trademark, all the necessary checks have already been made. Under European law they don't have to say, "You're eatings bugs." but they do have to label ingredients.
and also, what is annoying is that people don't want to eat bugs because they're 'creepy and crawly' and they're apparently scary looking. animals aren't quite sanitary either, and yet most people eat them anyway. They all have the same body systems, its just they look different.
okay like it's gross that there are bugs in our food, but i'm also vegetarian so I could be biased, and the food companies should tell us what's in our food, because they should put EVERYTHING that is in the product on the back in case of an allergic breakout that happened to this child. But this report is using way too much emotional appeal, it's like a news report on a kid getting an allergic breakout from drinking milk because he didn't know he was allergic, which is why I dont' like this.
Chof-K, and Star-K on food packages are supervision signs that the products do not contain bugs. They consider anything containing carmine as non-kosher.
This may be one of the ways for people to stay away from this. Please double check with these kashrut supervising agencies to be sure.
I agree, it should be labled... but only because it's an alergen to some people. its fair enough (like eggs, penuts, etc. I think its completely absurd to ask for something like this to be banned... its equally commonsensical to ask that all people with alergies be exterminated so the majority of the people (99.999%) can just live their damn lives. take penut butter out of schools... take eggs out of everything just to cater to people with alergies. its crazy... just like me

Milk has pus in it. The USDA allows up to 750 million pus cells per liter before the pus/milk mixture is regarded as abnormal.
Of course, you are not going to see this information in ads or on labels.
