I hunt something very similar to that in WI its a heavily wooded creek that connects to a decent pond. We get both mallards and woodys because of all the acorns. they just love them.
It is 100 percent LEGAL to shoot a duck anywhere, whether its on land, in the air, or in the water. I agree its not very sportsman like but it is absolutely legal. If injured the most humane thing to do is shoot them. Don't let them swim off and suffer. Finish them off and cook them up. Shoot straight and fold em up
i am 14 yrs old and im from arkansas and i dont know if its illegal or legal to shoot birds on the water but it is arkansas so hey we got plenty of ducks but i try my best to scare them off the water and then bust at them but if they dont hear or see me then hes dead -if it flies it dies-
you can easily tell its crippled by the way its head is. drake woodies do not hold their heads like that swimming around, they hold their heads up high. yall are just hatin because yall cant shoot woodies like this guy... that is unless your from SC ofcourse haha
whats the big deal about shooting ducks on the water? the duck you shot was wounded, you could tell by the way it was swiming. its not that big of a deal to shoot ducks on the water.
Yeah, some sport. The injury rate in waterfowl hunting is high enough to be obscene. Amazes me anyone can feel good about engaging in this practice. Totally disgusting.
It is legal to shoot waterfowl off the water. Not good sportsmanship ill agree, BUT in this case it is a lot more sportsman like to shoot a cripple instead of injuring it and letting it go off somewhere and die....I hunt waterfowl faithfully and have had to finish off MANY birds that were on the water and unable to fly, which i think is a lot more sportsman like than letting it swim off and die later for something to come and eat other than me. Great video and good hunting!
i love how people say woodies are rare....thats all i get in my back pond is woodies, woodies and more woodies....then the random coot...but yes thats all i can ever call in, in my pond
and to be honest, I killed hundreds of ducks and one of them was a wood duck, I was sad to have killed such a rare and beautiful creature, so I made it stuffed and arranged, now its some kind of trophy ever since
do you really need a woodduck call? i have been hunting them for years and from what i can tell, its either they come or they dont. but does it really make a difference with a call?
People need to quit complaining because he shot the duck on the water. I dont care if its injured or not, me and probablly everyone else would shoot a duck on the water. Great video by the way.
awesome video..reminds me of october wood ducks here in NY STATE..
i hunt a slough that looks just like this one here in NY STATE...
shooting is so close i use a 20 gauge youth gun with a skeet choke and hevishot number 6 being most birds are within 5 yards of me when they drop into the hole.,.

to u all u dum shits that think its "unsportsman" like to shoot a wounded animal and put it out of its misery FUCK U! and if u didnt notice he already shot it in the air and it was tryin to swim anway and he shot it so he could get it and so he didnt have to worry bout loosing it
that was mature of you... and although i know what you meant, you might want to read your responses before you post them so you don't sound like, you know, a dumb shit. your sentence makes no sense...
and i acknowledge my mistake. the duck was wounded. and while it's not illegal to shoot unwounded swimming ducks, it's ridiculously unsportsmanlike (skill level required to shoot a swimming duck is far below that needed to shoot one in the air)
@TheHawk2617 well now that you know the duck was wounded, i'm sorry for all those rude comments. i'm just a big fan of the canadian wingshooter, so sorry if i made myself look like a jerk :(
Apology accepted. Likewise, I'll apologize for being a bit condescending, b/c I actually feel bad insulting people who actually seem respectful. (the internet could use a lot more people like that!)
Watch closely, just before the water shot the bird was shot and fell through the trees. I cut the audio where I spoke with the guy who shot it, the duck could not fly away. I would never shoot a bird on the water.
yeah well guess what else isn't legal, your mom fat fucking ass. and it was in the fucking US dumb shit it was in canada you chip fucking little basterd and the duck was wounded any way!!!!
not illegal at all..frowned upon by elitist wingshooters maybe but not illegal by any means...and actually water swatting is condsidered a tradition in some parts of the country,,
@TheHawk2617 legal? yes... "good sportsmanship"? not necessarily... i have seen 7 year olds shoot on the water for their first duck. no big deal. :) this guy obviously respects the birds. he even lets some go on the other videos.... "it flies it dies" is not always how it goes. love to just watch em fly!
@TheHawk2617 whats up with everybody frowning down on shootin a bird on the water??? Yall obviously arent from the south.. down here we're not picky if a bird lands on the water in my spread, ill make noise and give him a good ten seconds to get off the water before i shoot and if not, then too bad for him. And btw i dont know where youre from but in SC its definitely NOT illegal to shoot a bird on the water havent you seen any duck commander shows?
@TheHawk2617 You are wrong. It is not legal in some states. In MO where im from it is most indeed legal. Although I still try not to do it unless theyre crippled or were jumping them.
@TheHawk2617 Its legal in Missouri. My lil brother is 8 and we let him shoot them on the water with my old 410. He gets a kick out of it. We shoot em on the wing.
@TheHawk2617really for one its legal and two maybe ever consider that it would be fine for a youngster to take one on the water. read up on your recs bud
That's a whole lot of woodies flying. Looks like mid-day too. Seems like they hide in Wisconsin 10 minutes after shooting time. If you want a woodie here, ya gotta shoot 'em early. Keep it up guys.
ive got the wood duck passion everyone i know loves hunting mallards i think wood ducks are more of a challenge i love em hunt central south carolina gonna get some haydel wood duck calls soon
Please notice that the duck was shot and fell through the trees. It is difficult to see because the camera was going from light to dark, but you can see that the duck was a cripple and needed to be finished. Perhaps I should have left that scene out, but it was the right thing to do. in fact, the guy who shot it spoke to me before he took the shot to let me know he was shooting in my direction, the bird could not fly away even though we were speaking and I was only 20 feet away from the bird.
Wow! Your woodies are in pretty much full plumage during your early season? I wish ours were. Every now and then we will get a drake with a little color but not often.
They like wooded areas, marsh or creeks. We often shoot them over large ponds too. This video was shot in a creek, although we knew where they were roosting we did not have permission for the roost pond; we now do.
Yes, using better upload programs. The last upload was not so clear and did not do it justice. I think this one is a little shorter, less talking, more action; always works better on you tube.
In the 21st century still has these horns shooting at birds, will have the punishment they deserve still alive ..
