mike weaver was always a slow starter, who got stronger as fights went on. as he proved in the rematch with dokes, he could have done better. also, curtis was a terrible ref, and blew many other calls in the opposite way, by letting them go too long: bramble-crawley, calvin-summers
Terrible stoppage -- in the 1st round, no less!. And people, good intentions do not excuse it. If a ref is that trigger-happy to call a fight, he shouldn't be in the boxing ring.
Watching this , I'm thinking what a retarded referee , but in slow motion , Weaver did not respond that prompted the ref to stop it . I think it's bullshit , but the ref stated the death of another boxer prompted him to stop it . Reminds me of Richard Steele , one of the shittiest refs ever to stop fights too quick that you wonder if there paid off .
@double42 Richard Steele was one of the best referees in boxing ever. He only had two fights that were considered quick stoppages. Not a whole shitload. Ruddock to be fair was in bad position when Steele jumped in between. Ruddock's head was completely chin up and exposed and his left arm was behind the ropes. Tyson would killed that fucker, as he was in striking distance.
I've long forgiven Steele for the CHavez-Taylor fight. And I was a big Taylor fan. I let that shit go a long time ago.
@TheTruthAboutFloyd Richard Steele sold the Chavez-Taylor fight, there were only a few seconds left, Taylor was still fighting off before he fell, he recovered in time and only had to avoid Chavez for 3 seconds... Steele was also a close friend of Don King. He -was- a FRAUD
@Sacriphyx Yeah a ninety year old alzheimers patient should not be reffing a fight. Weaver got hurt allot and came back. The ref didn't give him a chance/
Dokes' language cracks me up. 'Sweltering?' 'Frisky?' Too funny. But what's this nonsense when the ABC man asks whether the referee, Joey Curtis, should have called on the ringside physician 'for a consultation.' Only for cuts (or bites) does the doctor get involved. In boxing, the referee is the sole man in charge. I think the stoppage was a bit premature, but Weaver wasn’t fighting back. If you watch the British broadcast on youtube, the commentator doesn’t object to the stoppage.
When was that, in 2000?? Thats ridiculous. And Holmes didn't knock Weaver out, the fight was stopped-prematurely even. Mike Weaver was strong as a bull, he could take a lot of punishment and he obviously wasn't going down yet when it was stopped. And WBA title is the oldest title, so I don't find it "meaningless". Ali had that title.
Weaver was robbed in the rematch with Dokes too, I remember seeing the fight as a kid, most who saw it thought Weaver won, but it was ruled a draw. I wish someone can upload that fight here in youtube too.
For those of you questioning how seriously Weaver was hurt and whether he could have weathered the storm, check the clip up here of him fighting Coetzee (round 8). It's an EXACT replica of this, but Joey Curtis ain't the ref, so the end result is completely different. Bottom line: THIS fight was stopped too soon.
Fighters (unfortunately) die every year in the ring, and every time it leads to the same reaction (people asking for the sport to be banned). I'm just saying that a GOOD referee has to be able to judge a fight objectively (sanctioning people breathing down his neck or not). Only Joey Curtis knew what exactly made him stop the fight, but the point remains that it was premature. And about Weaver not fighting back: he throws a left hook and his guard is pretty solid. In no way is he "comatose".
A referee should be objective, and not let himself get influenced by what occurred in some other fight. And of course Weaver was hurt, hell, he was knocked down. But he got up immediately and his eyes were clear. In no way was he getting his "head caved in". He was doing a rope-a-dope and punching back. The referee stopped it too soon, that's the bottom line. And like I said, if this was just another fight, so what, but this was for the heavyweight championship of the world.
Ok, don, you have a point. Let's call the second fight badly decided; "farce" could be an exaggeration. Could be...
On the other hand, in two fights with Michael "Dynamite" Dokes, Mike Weaver is the one who got blown up. He would probably tell us the word "farce" is too mild.
Why did Holmes and Weaver not have a second fight? Weaver had the WBA belt from 80'-82 and deefended it twice against Coetzee and Tillis. Their first fight was awesome. Did Weaver duck Holmes or vice versa?
I feel it was the political climate due to the fact that Weaver was not a Don King fighter. If there is one negative about Larry, it was that he never became the unified champ, and Weaver would definitely at this time been a formidable opponent.
Dokes was also not given any legitamite title opts after losing to Coetzee. He had just 1 loss when he fought Holyfield in 89'. A Dokes tyson fight could have been a great slugfest. Holmes/Pinklon/Witherspoon could have given him a shot in 84'-86
I think part of that reason was the fact that Dokes only fought once in 84, and twice in 85, and the drug problem really started to kick in at that time.A prime Dokes could possibly beat Witherspoon and Thomas, but Holmes may have been too much due to his inactivity.
A little early? Yes, Weaver was hurt by the left hook that knocked him down, but just look at the way he is defending himself after he gets back up. Dokes lands a couple of overhand rights, but they're not damaging punches. Weaver's reaction right after the stoppage says it all: he immediately complains. And again, this was for the HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD: the reigning champ deserves the right to defend his crown, you don't stop a fight of this magnitude that soon, Kim or no Kim.
86pimp03 you are the only person, other than the judge concerned, who thought Dokes won the rematch. Shocking stoppage in first fight, boxing's cheating politics in fight 2.
A premature ending if ever there was one. Terrible decision by the referee. After the knockdown Dokes was throwing a lot of punches, but not landing anything big because Weaver was still very able to defend himself. Stopping a heavyweight titlefight in this fashion is a crime!
He already fought him in 1979, and knocked him out in the 11th.But I think Larry was more about the moolah at this point in his career, as he avoided certain fighters, and fought Scott Frank and Marvis Frazier.
ref was in somebody's pocket. this sport needs to be cleaned up!

Weaver won the rematch, at least 9 or 10 rounds; Boxing wanted Dokes to win--Dokes won.
So both fights stand in Boxing hx as just two more bad jokes, noting that Boxing is a very funny sport.
BooBooLane 3 years ago
"The first knockdown"---------there was only one knockdown.
The draw was also a farce. Boxing is the metaphor of Life. Like politicians, Boxing keeps giving us garbage, we keep taking it.
