Indeed, the piano itself is over 100 years old and doesn't hold it's tune. My interpretation has changed a lot wince this video was made, almost 4 years ago now. There are a lot of things in this video that are just plain wrong. You've got to cut me some slack though, at this point I had had no lessons, and had only been playing for about a year and a half.
not bad man, not bad. I would encourage you to take some lessons because self taught can only get you so far. And also you might wanna consider getting the piano tuned.
hey it might not be all that bad getting a decent teacher. if youre really a one and a half year self taught student, then youre a genius, cuz you have great finger techniques and great musicality for a beginner like you. well, decent job, ive been playing for 12 years i think, and i just finished the piece (watch mine if you want :P), but yeah, keep practicing and maybe get that teacher and you'll get so much better. best of luck to ya.
excellent playing. although you could try playing it a little faster and make the notes crisper instead of dragging a long tail of sound if you get my metaphor
I know what you're talking about and I understand the difference sound quality can make. But...that does not affect the music...I have a 1929 recording of Rachmaninoff himself playing...the quality is horrible but the musicality is incredible...that is what I am talking about...making the music with the phrasing and style...that's what you could work on with lessons (although musicality can never be truly taught)
it's great for playing for only a year and a half and being self taught...
but i advise you to find a teacher very soon because you will find yourself developing bad habits that will be very hard to correct later on
by having a teacher to critique you...you will develop proper technique and hopefully a sense of style...because right now it just sounds like notes being pressed
lol, I am self taught, at least I was up until quite a while after I posted this..
it's very easy to read music if you have patience, it's just logic, I found out where middle c was on the treble and bass clefs and worked all the other notes out from there.. as for accidentals and ornamentation, if something confused me I just found someone who could read music to tell me what they meant..
I've had the same problem with audio/video out of sync. Anyone with any musical inclination can tell though that the audio is about 2 seconds behind the video and he is actually playing this song. Well done might I add.
some people think this video is fake, so I thought I'd explain something about video recording.. this was recorded using a digital camera, not a camcorder, it's not ideal, but it's all I have.. as a result the video and audio are different codecs, which means that it plays fine on my computer, but when it streams in when you watch it online, it's out of sync..
anyone who wants me to email them a copy, only needs to ask, I can send a compressed version, video should be synced with audio in it..
lol, I can only assume you don't play piano.. I dealt with this in earlier comments.. listen to the audio, closely, my sister coughs at around 1:20, the playing leaves much to be desired, the piano is out of tune..
I'm jealous! (Just kidding.) I've been playing for 20 yrs, having taken a 7 yr hiatus and just recently started playing again, and I can't even think about learning this piece yet! My goal is to learn it eventually. I'm kind of stuck on Chopin right now. (Ballade No. 1) Great playing, especially since you've only been playing the piano for 1 1/2 year, and self-taught! What talent!
It's really difficult yeah, but the part you see me playing here isn't too bad.. I think I'm actually going to learn Chopin's waltz in Em just now, and move back to this piece later.. I hope to get lessons at some point, but have no money just now :(
nobody that left you tips to play knows anything, and anybody that leaves a message about how you should play can't prove themselves competent, which is why they are stupid for leaving tips to begin with. Anyway, nice playing
Too much pedal, un-blur it. Otherwise, other things are acceptable. If you need to with any section of the piece, Pm me and ill make a vid for you. i played this piece professionally 5 times.
Just one thing I noticed: In the first few bars, you aren't holding the half-notes when you play the chords. Remember that you only use the pedal on the chords so you need to hold them down to stay legato=D
Otherwise, quite suprising for a self-taught to play such piece.
that's what I did, just get the music and work slowly, it took me 8hrs straight playing just to learn that one fast scale thing.. That's 8hrs for one bar of music, my right hand was agony after that..
pretty impressive for self taught =) i have that problem wiv my camera apparently ¬__¬ audio goes in first then the video doesnt even fit in wiv the audio....but judgin from ur audio...it's awesome =) keep up the gd work man
hey, awesome recording, and I've read the comments, so rest assured, I'm sure you've improved much since this recording. most the comments were about dynamics, but also remember that a good technical understanding should come before it, after you know the piece very well, and become familiar with it, then you'd have the flexibility, literally, to approach the song in a way you want, great job, I never made it past the first page ^-^;;
if youve been playing a year and a half, you wont be able to play the second section of it lol. you can definetly finish the first part, keep playing! =)
Very good control technically, but don't forget about dynamics, musicality and expression. Liszt was very meticulous in the placement of dynamic and expressive markings, so follow them carefully to match the style. A good upper arm support will allow you more freedom and control of the sound. Alos, listening to a professional and imitating his sound is also a very good way to improve your style. I'd personally like to hear more from you. Good job, and keep it up!
Thanks, I have improved it a lot since this recording, (or at least I hope so), I realised when watching it myself that my expression was simply wrong sometimes, and sometimes I speed up or slow down for no particular reason. I also noticed that sometimes my actual timing is wrong also, it's difficult because I am still trying to get the hang of reading music. If I can get hold of a better camera, (this was recorded using a digicam), I'll put up a more recent version among other things.
Sorry, I still don't understand, do you mean sit more upright so that my elbows are higher? I don't know what you mean by support downward movement that's all.. You mean allow my arms to flex more at the elbow, or use from the shoulder down?
Ok, touch your right shoulder with your right hand, and act like you're playing piano with your elbow..as if a little hand were attached there or something. You are now moving your upperarm. That's the movement you need to get used to while playing.
OK, will do that, thanks for the tips, I'm also trying to imitate a recording of it now, I have a couple of pianists playing it, but don't really like one of them. Anyway, thanks again.
Listen to the Hamelin recording, it's the best out there. Just search for it here on you tube. And no prob, always willing to help a fellow pianist :)
that piano sucked , sorry sir :(

Your piano is horribly out of tune.
oxSoSurreptitiousxo 5 years ago
yes it is :P
it's not as if I don't get it tuned, but it's over 100 years old, it goes out of tune after a day or so
deliriousthunder 5 years ago
Lol, get a new piano?
If you want to keep it in tune, you might need to change the strings. But. That would cost. A lot of money.
Maybe an electric keyboard?
oxSoSurreptitiousxo 5 years ago
if you have a spare one you can give me :P
I can't buy anything else, so it'll just have to do for now I guess.. it's actually a really nice piano when it's just been tuned, Broadwood :P
