How the BUSH fam TOGETHER WITH the BIN LADEN fam MADE TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WITH THEIR CARLYLE GROUP ON THE WARS IN IRAQ, AFGANISTAN... AFTER 9 11...
I will tell you what he will do:Obama has 12years of teaching Constitutional Law. Obama has already stated he will reverse all the exective order that Bush has signed into law that has trampled all over our constitution. Obama will also look at all the things that has been done by the Bush administration that has lead to the leakage of our wealth leaving our country by the billions. He will strengthen our military by not spreading our troops to thin and kill this war that has put us in debt.
McCain will be the one raising taxes to pay for missiles, killing more of us off in Iraq and wherever else he decides to invade. Taxes are part of life. They'll both tax us but would you rather pay to help poor Americans get back on their feet, or pay for a war that's killing Americans? Vote for Help, or Hate.
It's fine with him that we stay in war for 100 years as long as no one gets harmed, injured, or killed? What does he think war is? A trip to the supermarket? People are always going to be harmed injured AND killed during war and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent that, other than just not going to war.
Very interesting argument, and very well presented. Especially since Obama seems to be adopting a strategy of hitting where McCain, according to this blog, is stronger, the economy. Granted if you take out that leg you have McCain clinging to Iraq, but its possible they are waiting to hit him where he is weak later on where it would do more damage. We will see.
Yes, having bases in Germany and Japan is exactly like keeping bases in the Middle East, a region known for its stability and peacefulness. Everyone there is too busy with their good jobs and plentiful water supplies and functioning electricity to care if the US keeps military bases in their homeland. What we need is to make them even more desperate, so they will stop recruiting new suicidal terrorists.
Even if John McCain means that he wants a 100 year military presence there, just like we have been in Germany since the end of WWII, and Japan, and South Korea since the end of the Korean War, for Iraq, that would be impossible, because they don't want us their, Germany, Japan, and South Korea accepted us their because they saw us as heroes defending them against Communism, but for Iraq? that is a different story, we went there by choice, so 100 years means a 100 year War, not presence.
We still have troops and bases in Japan and Germany in non-combat roles over 60 years after WW2. You act like a dishonest propagandist when you take his words out of context and twist his meaning.
Oh yeah, forgot, we have oil, but the damn tree huggers won't let us drill within a hundred miles of the coast, while Cuba is drilling right next to Florida (and they are within 200 miles of their coast per international law).
The future is not in oil it's in nanotechnology for solar energy. Plants use solar energy and it has supported all life for hundreds of millions of years. In less than five years solar energy will be more cost effective then oil and coal. Plus oil in the oceans and mountain is more expensive and would be long>>> term inverstment.
The surge has worked and is working. Its a military fact and the current reality unless you are smoking crack.
We still have air bases in Germany, Japan, and half the world. Why, they do want us there, because we are the only ones standing between them and their enemies. I bet Georgia (the country not the state) wishes they had an American base in their country right now, then Russia would be screwing with them and shooting their stuff down.
I hope every American soldier OUTSIDE America gets... Actually, I hope all the oil on the planet dries up and then America will finally, FINALLY leave the rest of the world alone. Hopefully.
The bottom line is socialist nation-building is a crime. We should have nuked iraq, not waste American lives and our taxes on this commie, nwo bullsh*t.
We have shipped jobs and national defense contracts overseas. Don't make the same mistake with the Presidency. The democrats now want to outsource the Presidency to a Kenyan instead of an American!
It's important to stall Israel's nuclear pre emptive strike till alternate energy sources make the Middle East immaterial to US, but Surge works" is just bait & switch from that goal in Iraq.
McCain in Iraq's like hiring a Empire State Building JANITOR to build skyscrapers. Just being there doesn't reveal anything since the enemy's invisible till an IED blows out your ass.
Vietnam, an enemy in uniform we could see, we fought a war of attrition (kill everybody). We still lost.
Oil's the lifeblood of the world's heart, the economy. Oil dries up, the world dies of a heart attack. We need 5 years to get into alternate energy, wind, solar, electricity, and even nuclear, so that the Middle East becomes immaterial to our economic good, and leave. LEAVE.
Then, let Israel police the area with its 65 alleged nukes, turning the place into angry black slag if threatened.
Get into alternate energy sourcs now, the best way to get our troops home.
This is why there needs to be a WORLDWIDE ban on nuclear and biological weaponry. It's wrong no matter who does it. Back when wars were fought with swords and shields... the casualties were almost entirely military. Guns came around and military deaths went down, but innocent bystanders were killed more and more. Bombs increased it burther. With nukes we can make sure none of our military dies... but we kill more civilians than their military. Wars should be fought between militaries.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
John McCain knows the surge is working because he has visited Iraq on several occasions. How often does this Veracifier guy check up on our status in Iraq?
Please don't reply unless you have a valid argument.
How about the fact the Iraqi people don't believe it's working and want Americans to leave. 69%. Dear, get your head out of the sand and tell McCain where the real terrorist are, they aren't and never have been in Iraq.
thesophisticatedgent: I have a valid argument. Why should we vote for mccain who is going to continue the war while not raising taxes and borrowing all the money from the Chinese and japanese? I don't want my kids and their kids paying for that war. It does nothing to help my family in rural PA. Also, i am living in China now and can tell you that they hate us. We are going to be in debt up to our hairlines in debt to a country full of 1.3 billion US hating chinese.
its time to get rid of the white power that runs America and obama is the peoples statement to that fact we also need to get rid of the white congress and house senate etc to much white has ruined this country.
Read obama lama ding dong's:"Shit From My Father"or"The Audacity Of Shit"...from CHICAGO politico lying, racist pig. Read Hillbilly's "It Takes A Shit-eating Village" from the habitual, lying, sniper bitch. Then take a look at mad mad McCain's beer swilling, lying bullshit (his book was written by someone else)...just vote republican so the dems don't have all the power..keep the lying bastards fighting each other in d.c. leave the rest of us alone. it has nothing to do with white power, dumbass
Nobody likes war. But I agree that if we pull out now. Iran gets Iraq, gas goes to $5.00 a gallon. If Obama wins the presidency, start stocking up on gas. Quick before he raises taxes so high you can't even afford to pay attention.
He never said to fight for 100 years, nor did he ever insinuate a 100 year war.
Even Iraq asks us to stay with a base after this war has ended.
We have bases in countries all over right now that are not at war, some have already been there 50 and 60 years already, as he mentions. Many countries like having US bases there.
04/01/08 Obama made the same spin remark and is getting slammed.
It should definitely be the case, that his statements on Iraq, and his silly "bomb Iran" singing, should be looped on tv ads night and day, until everyone sees what a nut-job this guy is.
Discrimination against money free parties will cost the department of the treasury dearly, and the tax payer will pay for the demuise of the failure of true democracy.
Josh its media hog washing and brainwashing....
You havn't said a thing about that. You like your government committing treason on the backs of american citizens.
John McCain says he's ready to fight this war for the next 1000 years (if he can live through one term in the White House, that is) yet he doesn't know Iraq from Iran.
Apparently he's a typical old fart who doesn't listen to his son (who just returned from a tour with the Marines).
McCain can't understand economics, yet it's the biggest issue (after the war) that Americans are facing.
Do we really need another out-of-touch ideologue in the Oval Office?
McCain couldn't tell the difference between Shiite and Sunni, which is so fundamentally important in understanding the situation in Iraq. Why is it that people are still listening to what he has to suggest in handling this war?
It's really time for all these unapologetic people who've been wrong with everything about this war the whole time (WMD presence, how long/how much work/how much money it takes to stablelize Iraq) to sit back and let others fix this mess.
The Republicaton nominee is sadly, a mirror image of the current President, please help us, not another devil incarnate!
The Democrats are totally losing it, they are so busy emasculating each other's nominees they will probably commit political suicide by June '08. The democrats simply have lost the ability to choose and participate meaningfully in the Democratic Process!
The American people are so darn confused; the government tells one blatant lie after another. It will keep saying things are "starting" to look up, so they can keep the bankers and fascist psychos can keep the dirty money game going.
I wish people would wake up. The brain is for thinking; not the butt.
The only one with the knowlege and desire to get us out of this mess was Ron Paul, but he was refused. Thanks a lot, America. I guess you really really do thing with your butts.
Well said, Josh Marshall. My overall query: how is this situation unique, in that the admin. is willing to part with how much this war continues to COST?? It's just so wrong on so many fronts. It's also inherently linked to dependence on foreign oil of course, which is linked to our excess CO2 dilemma etc. Years of continued funding suggests to me there is a huge underlying agenda worth many many billions (not even to mention the casualties).
Bush turned Iraq into an Al Qaeda recruiting ground where Al Qaeda didn't exist before, and made Iran the strongest power in the Middle East after Israel by destroying the Iranians natural enemy, Saddam. Obviously, with this track record, the Republicans, who, don't forget, managed to let Osama get away in Afghanistan at the beginning of THAT war, should already be packing their bags for a long hibernation.
So your reality is based on polls not on actual facts. We need to stay in Iraq as long as there are terrorists to kill. The more we kill there, the few that can come here.
"Mission Accomplished" as you mean it describes either a banner hung on the USS Abraham Lincoln, which had just returned from her mission in the Persian Gulf, or to the President's statement that major combat operations ("convential" warfare) had ended.
McCain might be trying to compare the spirit of the Iraqi war to WWII, not the circumstances. For you to compare body counts between such different wars is absurd, but if you must: 418,000 American casualties in WWII vs 4,000 in Iraq.
McCain's campaign is loaded with lobbyists and neo-cons Bill Kristol is an adviser for crying put loud. I didn't buy into the McCain will be worse than Bush argument until I saw the people that surround him. HE WILL BE WORSE THAN BUSH and that is almost impossible. As far as the surge working that is such bullshit. It's more propaganda and the people fall for it like sheep. 49 MILLION Iraqi's still don't have clean water or electricity Bush's corporate buddies make BILLIONS while they suffer.
Unfortunately there is something covering his Achilles Heel; the mainstream media.
They write off his bad statements as either mispeaking or joking, they portray him as having an adept sense of foreign policy despite the fact that his foreign policy is nothing more than 4 to 8 more years of bush and the MSM even helped McCain when the NY Times uncovered his big lobbyist scandal by turning it over as an attack on the NY Times.
Thinking that the Dems can defeat McCain based upon opposition to the war is naive. They thought the same thing about Kerry defeating Bush in 2004 - when the war was also unpopular based upon the polls - and look where that got them.
21% = 2/5?, and the guy reads it without noticing that 1/4 is less then 2/5. I was always skeptical about tpm but now I see that he is a puppet, reading without thinking.
why no any stupid of them calls or talk about the peace for all the earth or no body likes the peace any more. any way fuch McCains him self and his pushes ideas
I am hating being here. It's bullshit. The whole thing and the people. We, the U.S., are idiots here and we are fucked left to right and lied to because we're throwing money like confetti in every direction just to get support. Complete crap though.
...We're now giving amnesty to thousands of insurgents who admit to blowing up Americans and planting bombs, shooting at us, etc. I know you're thinking - well, that's not quite right probably. No, it's exactly right. I could show you the articles in the papers. Perhaps you've read some of them. We are so fucked up here it's beyond rational belief.
...I looked into doing a conscientious objector thing but I think the Army would fuck you so bad and rake you over the coals for months. Claiming C.O. status is a long process and I think the Army die-hards look at as giving them the middle finger. Perhaps it is like giving them the finger? Fuck the process and all of them though. I'm still thinking about it.
...Just seems like an extremely difficult road once you start researching the procedure and paperwork and interviews which are required. The Army is so irrational and dysfunctional that you cannot comprehend it without getting fucked by it up close and personal. Then it's like - wow, it really is completely fucked up.
Correction: That Harris poll said (and Josh repeated) that support for the surge had gone from 1 in 10, "to two in five (21%)". 21% is not two in five. Two in five would have been 40%! Sloppy (skewed?) reporting from Harris, which will be repeated as fact on Fox. Read closer next time, TPM. The devil is in the details.
It doesn't, that is known, but what is also known is that he did not mean a 100 year occupation, he was speaking on the bases we have across the world for decades upon decades, of course we are going to create base(s) in Iraq we would be stupid if we didn't.
How could there even have been an opinion poll taken on what Americans feel towards the 'surge' in May of TWO THOUSAND FOUR (2:20). The surge didn't take effect until 2007.
I respectfully disagree. Once the Democratic race is settled and it's Obama vs. McCain (as I think it will be), I think you're gonna see a real healthy referendum on the last eight years of Republican rule. And based upon what we're facing now, I don't think the American people are going to give the GOP another four years.
Of course the numbers can change with the American people, as the situation changes and hopefully, the MSM covers it again. Because we need to understand the urgency that the situation there, still sucks. Which I think is what's happening now, as the 4,000 dead milestone and the recent upsurges in violence in the region/possible ending of Sadr cease-fire, are happening. The MSM coverage of it seems to be increasing again.
Uh, you getting all your facts from Rush or something? Obama has foreign policy experience as part of the Senate Committee for Foreign Relations. Also, being a POW does not count as foreign policy experience. xD
Hillary and Barak will NOT remove up to 75,000troops at the bases in Iraq."The War" may end and our occupation will remain.Wrong, wrong, wrong. Don't only talk about McCain. All of these jokers will help destroy the US.We're in debt.We don't manufacture much so we will be more apt to have a depression, not a recession. We're burning a gallon and a third of fossil fuel to create one gallon of ethanol. The increased production of corn has driven up the price of wheat. We're sunk!
100 years, 1000 years are just rhetorics. What John MacCain saying is that don't pull the plug when it's progressing, otherwise, it's just as the same as there is not a surge.
No, he actually cites the fact that we have been in Korea for 60 years, and states that it does not matter if we are their (Iraq) for 100 years.
However, we have to pay for our policing of the world. That will eventually bankrupt our country.
Also, an overwhelming majority of Iraqis want the US out. What right to we have to remain in a democracy where the population overwhelmingly wants us out?
Well, the thing is that people have run out of patience. Apparently, a timetable does not make sense either, because there are so many variables. If we retreat now, these Sunni militia will turn their guns to us now instead of helping us as the time being. So still, we are in a difficult situation.
While I agree with you, Joshua, that the war is one of McCain's strongest achilles' heels, the problem of what the American people will tolerate as a resolution still remains. We want to feel like our sacrifice (or others') has meant something. I'm not worried about the war being unpopular,I know it is, but I'm very worried about what Americans think we need to accomplish in Iraq before we leave. If only a sympathetic puppet govt will do, then I'm we're in for a long haul, probably under McCain.
Thank you Josh for some real perspective and thoughtful commentary. These so-called polls twist and distort the facts so much it's a wonder anyone can understand the true meaning of them. 32% of the 66% changed their minds to 62% which means the 32% of the 66% blah blah blah...twist bang crash....lol no wonder most stay asleep.....
it shouldnt matter if the surge is working or not, the media is still avoiding the fact that the invasion of iraq works against the geneva convention and other international laws,,,the media is ignoring this fact which means that they are following the script presented by americas twisted administration
I disagree with you on that the dems are missing their opportunity. They have already started calling mccain a third term bush and have used the 100 year line against him. It should be noted though that john mccain was against Donald rumsfeld. Even john king from CNN said that the truth is that mccain is more in line with general petraeus, than he is with bush. A defeat for America is a victory for someone else, and there is too much at stake in iraq for the dems to ensure defeat
Remember Vietnam? If you can't win then defeat is inevitable the only question is how many other peoples children are you prepared to let die before you admit it?
Most people don't seem to realize that this is no longer about polls or who gets elected, this is now about the economic survival of the united states as we know it. If McCain does get elected America will initially go bankrupt, then we will enter an era of economic slavery to nations like China and India.
It would be inhumane to leave Iraq incapable of sustaining itself. A (one term senator)Obama and (no sniper fire) Clinton, do not have a clue when it comes to Iraq on what to do. Let McCain finish the job and leave America proud.
Funny how nobody could give a shit about the people of Iraq under the iron fist of Saddam and yet now we can't leave for the Iraqis' sake. What a crock of shit. Face it: you want to stay in Iraq because the leaders you align yourself with-- like Bush and McCain-- have told you so.
Who's nobody? Just because some Americans are ignorant or apathetic to the rest of the world does not mean that for the sake of ignorance that all should withdraw from Iraq and leave our fellow human brothers and sisters to anarchy. I am not so simple minded as to blindly follow someone like you mentioned. The course taken now is the most sane and sound. Not just "let's pull out cause volunteer soldiers are dying" Remember, they signed on the bottom line. Not your business, it's theirs.
Why are you talking about sacrifice? You haven't sacrificed anything for your "human brothers and sisters." Other people have paid the price, but you haven't. Please don't advocate sacrifice if you don't even practice it.
Some Americans. A poll of one thousand or heck even ten thousand is not enough to constitute a representation of all Americans, so they can take those "polls" and stuff em. And those policies are working. ie: violence DOWN 60% in Iraq. That not make any sense to you? Pulling out prematurely(no pun intended) would be disastrous.
hey dipshit - McLame also doesn't know who is fighting in Iraq either.
But ur a dipshit robot who is going to support whatever those repukes tell you to...ur the reason why the terrorists hate us! Too much pride - sign up for the military and but ur own ass where your mouth is...jerkoff!
What's with the name calling chief? So he mispoke and they wanna jump on that like it was worth anything. Evil is what evil does boy. Iranian gov't/Al Qaeda, they're all the same bastards. They exploit, abuse and subjigate their populations with no popular representation. It's time they wake up to the 21st century and it's time you blind aholes do the same.
How can you finish the job with a crippled economy? Trillions of dollars are being poured into this and for what? The Iraqi people call Americans the "occupiers" and want them out of their country. STOP POLICING THE WORLD FOR RESOURCES AND STAY OUT OF ENTANGLING ALLIANCES WITH OTHER NATIONS. THIS IS THE KIND OF SHIT THAT BROUGHT ABOUT 911 IN THE FIRST PLACE. People like you want to fix the problem by contributing to the problem, THAT is what you don't get.
McCain is the only candidate saying it publicly...but all 3 candidates foreign policy is basically the same thing. We will have a permanent presence in Iraq. Have you heard Obama or Clinton talk about removing the 14 permanent bases??? No..because they wont. They are all making provocative statements about Iran.
Both Paul and Kucinich voted against authorizing this war, against the Patriot act, and against all funding...to bad voting records just dont matter to voters.
I agree with everything you've said, except this: a 2 to 1 split in votes is not `overwhelming` ... ignoring the minor hair splitting, if the Iraq War continues to be as unpopular as it is, and/or the economy continues to be a major political issue, McCain has little chance of a victory in November ...
mccain replaced Giuliani remember, mr.9/11. I was convinced Giuliani was going to win, now it looks like the same party just changed the figure head. I predict team 911 will have the presidency.
From his perspective, it's easy to see why McCain is unconcerned with how long American Troops remain engaged in Iraq: If he had his way, that old man will never live long enough to see the end of it!
Great! Another God Damned Republican who expects someone else to clean up his fukkin' mess!
Keep up the good work Josh. It has irritated me to no end how the media played off McCain's 100 year comment instead of his 10,000 year comment. Any ad against McCain should include his own quotes & photos of him kissing up to that war criminal, Bush.
I don't exactly trust the Dem candidates to be able to get us out of Iraq like they're promising, but I sure as hell don't want a 3rd term of Bush getting us further stuck in this horrible quagmire. All warmongers MUST be removed from office!
mccain can stay in iraq as long as he wants. fortunately, president obama will be getting us the hell out of there. go away john mccain, you're old and senial.
Obama will do nothing of the kind. Wait until he gets into office and you will see how little change is forthcoming.
I hate to rain on the Obama or Clinton parade but the reason this stuff from McCain isn't challenged too hard is so they don't leave hostages to fortune.
The real mystery in this campaign is how in gods name with all this outcry for change the country ended up with an ardent supporter of Bush, another Clinton and a guy who won't know his arse from his elbow if he makes it.
You're right fishhead06, the key issue seems to be leaning towards race, than the economy, Iraq and healthcare...
The Pastor Wright soundbites have caused this huge eruption of racial tensions. People really need to understand, that's really how it goes down in a black church.
After we get past that, maybe we can get back on the far more important issues.
The Real threat to Liberty is the Federal Reserve, notice all three canidates never talk about it. I think this channel is bought and paid for as well. Keep focused on the War, so you don't worry about your wealth being slowly taken away. Does it really matter who's in power, if you have 0 wealth.

Yourdeadmeat69 3 years ago
This is why there needs to be a WORLDWIDE ban on nuclear and biological weaponry. It's wrong no matter who does it. Back when wars were fought with swords and shields... the casualties were almost entirely military. Guns came around and military deaths went down, but innocent bystanders were killed more and more. Bombs increased it burther. With nukes we can make sure none of our military dies... but we kill more civilians than their military. Wars should be fought between militaries.

Do we really need another out-of-touch ideologue in the Oval Office?
dogstar7 3 years ago 3
Exactly!

Years of continued funding suggests to me there is a huge underlying agenda worth many many billions (not even to mention the casualties).
vital2mi 3 years ago 2

Bush turned Iraq into an Al Qaeda recruiting ground where Al Qaeda didn't exist before, and made Iran the strongest power in the Middle East after Israel by destroying the Iranians natural enemy, Saddam. Obviously, with this track record, the Republicans, who, don't forget, managed to let Osama get away in Afghanistan at the beginning of THAT war, should already be packing their bags for a long hibernation.

McCain is trying to make Americans see Iraq as a potential Japan or Germany, where we have had troops in bases since the end of WWII.
This comparison is weak at best. Obviously the circumstances in these countries are very different than Iraq.
George Bush declared "mission accomplished" in 2003, therefore we have been an occupying force in Iraq since then.
How many troops have we lost to hostile fire in Germany and Japan since WWII? How many in Iraq since "mission accomplished"?
psatm 3 years ago 4
"Mission Accomplished" as you mean it describes either a banner hung on the USS Abraham Lincoln, which had just returned from her mission in the Persian Gulf, or to the President's statement that major combat operations ("convential" warfare) had ended.
McCain might be trying to compare the spirit of the Iraqi war to WWII, not the circumstances. For you to compare body counts between such different wars is absurd, but if you must: 418,000 American casualties in WWII vs 4,000 in Iraq.

Also, an overwhelming majority of Iraqis want the US out. What right to we have to remain in a democracy where the population overwhelmingly wants us out?

We want to feel like our sacrifice (or others') has meant something.

So what's the argument against Obama's ability to bring change?
