Gene Hackman totally got robbed of at least an oscar nomination if not a win for this performance... its a really awesome and memorable role, this movie will go down in history as a cult classic but i'm proud to say I saw it in the theater with my own father a few years before he died (life imitating art a bit). I couldn't even name you any of the other movies from the year this came out, but i'll always remember this one. Really underrated and underrecognized movie.
@ruin3r I think this was the year A Beautiful Mind came and everyone was obsessed with that movie. But yes, Gene Hackman gave a splendid, unforgettable performance.
To paraphrase Thoreau... I went to the.....streets.. and... garbage trucks, and Go Carts..... "because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
I say this as someone who did not love this movie. It gets my vote for #1 best, most arresting and most uplifting use of a montage-with-song in any movie I have ever seen.
I love this scene too. But if anyone saw this movie in theaters would realize the original song was 'Judy is a Punk' by the Ramones!!!! Can anybody vouch for me here? This song does not even come close to the original one, in fact the whole song was almost played throughout the whole scene (Judy is a Punk is only a minute and a half!)
OOOPS, true enough, it's the Margot's life scene. Maybe I just thought it was a good place to play the song over, either way I'm wrong. Thanks for the correction!
AH-HA! That explains everything! I obviously confused the trailer with the original scene! Thanks Ringo! I can finally stop scratching my head in wonder!

Hey, lets tailor a film for those spoiled, mediocre, pretentious white suburbanites : dress some popular actors in American Apparel clothing, with headbands, cowboy hats, and hipster beards, put in a vain suicide scene, a slut daughter with daddy issues, some more spoiled brats with daddy issues,a shy self mutilator with crush on his sister, layer some self absorbed Emo music over it for cheap effect.
Lets also just pay every famous actor in the world to be it in just for insurance.
I could pick apart any part of this comment but I'll just stick to one part
The music: So you are calling Me and Julio emo? (in case you can't figure it out that is the song playing right now) Goodbye Ruby Tuesday (because the Rolling stones are such emos) These days by Nico, the Charlie brown Christmas (or at least it sounded like it) are so emo, all they talk about are killing yourself and being stupid. The only song that could possibly be considered emo is needle in the hay but its debatable
Brilliant scene from a great film, even though rotten Gwyneth Paltrow is in it. Just goes to show how great the film is; even Gwyneth can't ruin it & trust me, Gwyneth ruins EVERYTHING.
Gene Hackman just became my role model
