Good job. The only suggestion difference is that Les slaps solely with his right hand instead of using the left-hand slap (or open slap and a hammer on). Also, was this song recorded on a fretless? It could be his EQing or maybe a slap plate of some kind, but it sounds a lot like a fretted bass.
@ILessThanThreeBass After playing a fretted for a while, you can kinda tell where certain notes are on the neck. Most also have dots on the side of the neck just for the musician to see.
Nice effort, unfortunately it's wrong. Really wrong. You're missing boatloads of notes. And like most youtubers, you have the actual primus track turned up so loud that it covers a lot of the errors you're making. Try again without the backing track...
@HalfBearPig No need to. I already know it's from "School of Rock." The instrument the little girl is playing in the orchestra class is a cello. So when he says "you just turn it sideways, and cello you've got a bass," it is a simple play on words. Just because there may be one video on Youtube with a wrongly spelled word, doesn't mean that it is correct. Any trained monkey can post a video online. It doesn't mean it can or should be used as a literary reference in schools all over the world.
at first i thought you were a fraud when i realized you just played the song on top of what you were playing but i can hear your bass on top of it, very nice.
@basslovak I used the fretless on this song because it's played on a fretless on the original song. For metallica songs, they are played on fretted basses, but you can play them on fretless if you want to! It wil probably sound interesting
@Kyhr78 I believe that a fretless bass was on a track or two on Metallica's Black album. I thought I had seen footage of Jason recording some bass lines in studio with a fretless, but I could be wrong. I think it was either on Sad but True or Where I May Roam....now I have to go watch again. LOL
@basslovak Some Metallica songs, like Until It Sleeps and Nothing Else Matters, were recorded on a fretless bass. Jason was a very experimental bass player, you can comprove that by listening Wherever I May Roam intro, where he uses a 12-string bass. You certainly should give a try on playing Metallica songs with a fretless bass. And sorry for any grammar errors, English is not my main language ;)
I can´t see any sense to play slap on a fretless e bass. One the one hand you won´t get enough attack and slap sound which usually is supportet by frets - on the other hand the fingerboard will suffer - scratched when slapping,...I would really like to here your own version, without background of the original,...
@zmiffster No no, what makes the sound is the changing length of the string. The frets just make it much easier for the strings to make solid contact with the neck and make a clean sound.
@ieatdababy69 Try an Ibanez GSR 200 or 205 (4 or 5 strings). They're good for everything from fingering to tapping to slapping. And they're cheap as fuck for a good bass.
nice freaking job man, question, i play bass, but don't know shit about it, i picked it up just to try to add my own bass to stuff i've recorded because of my luck with bass players. someone says slapping is bad for your fretboard, why is this?
I don't think slapp is bad for your fretboard on a fretted bass. It is bad on the fretless because you don't have the frets for the strings to resonnate against.
@Kyhr78 i have actually heard that most fretless basses have fretboards made of different kinds of wood than fretted for that very reason. supposedly the wood is stronger.
@banklikefrankwhite1 lol, it's bad on your "fretboard" because it'll tear it up with roundwounds, however if you use flatwounds then it won't tear it up nearly as bad, most fretless players prefer flatwounds because it's nicer to your "fretboard" especially if you like to shred, you've prolly seen what it'll do to frets (grind frets down) those are metal, the "fretboard" is obviously wood so put 2 and 2 together and you see that you can tear the wood up, hope this helps, either way have fun :D
@roamerreed i can't reply to your profile. but yes, thanks for the reply. and as far as that guy on my profile, he is a 35 year insane stalker that sends me one comment every couple weeks related to his favorite football team, that you'd think is his only child. hey man got any advice, i'm workin on this song i'm playing a warwick stream 5 string fretless but slapping on it is rather difficult. i'm not sure if its cause of the really low action, i've just don't have the money too get it set up right now. could the low action be the reason its difficult to slap?
@Salmiaification I think it's just difficult to slapp on a fretless because it doesn't have the frets and then it's hard to make the string resonate. A Higher action will make you slapp stronger on the bass and since it's a fretless I don't know if it's a good idea. I prefered to keep my action low and then I didn't have to slapp too hard and the neck of my bass is still in good shape. To get a sound close to Les' one I added some overdrive, it was way better after that.
@Kyhr78 hey ive just started to slap on a fretted bass 4 string but i just cant seem to hit 1 string with out hitting another do u have any ideas or advice on how i culd get better at slapping thanks :)
@sexybeast13ization It's allways like that when you begin to learn this technique. My advice is practice and practice. There are very good tutorials on youtube showing how to slapp and giving some good exercices (MarlowDK, Lesebu, Thebassistik are the ones i watch the most )
@tuks6 This isn't my only bass, I also have a 5strings Sandberg Panther and a 4strings Mayones be4. I played this song on the fretless because Claypool also plays on his 6strings fretless
@Kyhr78 actually and i noticed this not to long ago if you look as Les' "fretless" it does have frets on it at certain points why i don't but if you watch them play my name is mud live at woodstock you will see the frets
@bassplayer2011ify they're not frets, they are guidelines that a lot of fretless' have, its not complete cheating though cause they aren't where every fret usually is
@Kyhr78 Good Looking Guitar but, you are covering the wrong shit if your tryin not to slap it much... maybe it was just me, but you are not loud enough... all i could hear is Les. But my ears are not what they used to be either.. just what i got out of it is all but thanks for posting

@Oudl3000 if you talk about the white points under the G string, I didn't draw them. The ancient owner of the bass made them (not with a pencil... i think he made holes in the wood and filled the hole with wood paste)
Personally I don't see them from where i stand. I only see regular marks on the side of the neck.
