WHAT a difference this is to the Callas offering at Covent Garden in 1962. Here Freni achieves a beautiful legato line and some sublime soft singing as apposed to the can belto that Callas had to offer. At Covent Garden Callas was 39 years old and here Freni is 48 and outsinging Callas in EVERY POSSIBLE way! BRAVISSIMA!
Freni was wonderful but it's is interesting to recall that she was considered somewhat light for the role in her time though clearly wonderful.
For those who have heard the totally inadequate Marina Poplavskaya in the current production understand how far off the mark of what the role requires the MET has gone.
@dybertion I agree that Freni's voice is clearly superior, but when you compare the acting of that two... Would you still consider Freni the better one?
what is even more amazing is the way her voice grew over the years allowing her to totally change her repertoire (other than always singing Mimi). I am not sure we have seen somebody develop in that manner and preserve their voice
@operadoc Caballe? she started with mozart and strauss and then did more verdi and bel canto. but i think she held up very very well. also pretty much all of the sopranos of the "golden age" did too. lilli lehmann is prob the most famous for that.
Tenho este VHS. Sempre vejo, pois adoro Freni e Placido!

Bravissima. I prefer lighter interpretations of this aria, such this. But Fiamma Izzo d'Amico's version is the most outstanding.

Don't you know they wish they had someone like her to sing this at the Met. Listened to the broadcast a few weeks ago. Not even in the same league!!
