Yes it is taken from scott's view and it is a view of the Eildons Hills that are known locally as the three sisters. My dogs and i have spent hours on those hills.
@bothwell85 iI've heard them called that right enough but I wouldn't say it is that common a local name for them. People just normally call them the Eildons!
@Lamartellerie It is the view of the Eildon Hills from a spot called Scott's View. Legend has it that Sir Walter stopped there every time he rode by that the horses stopped for a while when pulling his funeral cortege!
After I read your comment, I went back and watched the viddy again. It didn't seem to me that they had any trouble reaching any of the strings. Maybe they had / have very long fingers... : D
From what I've seen of the combolins, it appears Roy created them with longer necks and extra frets so that all the needed frets and strings could be reached easily.
Roy's was a sitar-guitar and bandurria combintaion, and Ronnie's was a guitar, mandolin and bass combination.
Incredible creations from Roy! Although I read somewhere that they were quite heavy and straining on the boys' necks when played.
Quite sad and ashame they're no longer heard. They are sorely missed, as are the Corries!
As far as I know, these "Combolins" were develloped by the corries and some "innocent bystanders" :) and are among the hardest to play stringed instruments, thats probably why there are so few around although they sound awesome. I suppose it adds to the genius of the Corries. I fear it'll be a long time before we'll see their kind again.
To my -untrained - ears, they combine the sounds of a mandolina, a sithar, a lute and a thousand years of folk music. But then, that's just me :)

A beautiful border balad. Filmed at Scott's view near Melrose. Borders folklore says that when Sir walter Scott's funeral cortiege reached this point, the leading horse stopped of it's own accord as if in final tribute to its master. The Corries have done this well written ballad justice. A beautiful rendition!
Just wanted to say hello Leitboy I went to school and we lived in Lindsay Road back in the early 40's ran about Bridge Street /Sandport Street and the Shore still got relations in Leith a lot of waters gone down the Waters O Leith since then Take Care
Oh my god, that's filmed at Scott's View... In July, I've been sitting on that very brick where Ronnie sits in the video :) I so fell in love with the place! The light, the endless view to the Eildon Hills, the green valley... perfect location for that song!
the original use of the combolins enhances these timeless melodys and the duos harmonys was the icing of the cake no politics involved just super music !!
For goodness sake, stop all this political wrangling, this is a beautiful song that just happens to be performed by a Scots duo. There is no agenda other than setting a melody to a poem by Sir Walter Scott.
Actually this melody is much older than Sir Walter Scott's poem and previously had its own lyrics. He took his poem from the original multitude of verses and abridged it into it's better known form as heard here.
To MissDumbledore; it`s not a Lute. The instruments are both Combolins, designed and built by Roy Williamson. They both had guitar and mandolin necks, Roy´s having additional sympathetic strings to make it resonate like a Sitar. They still exist. They´re in the care of a friend of Roy´s, who has used them to record his own and versions of the Corries music.
The whole point of the discourse jamiew243 is to get ideas out there and discuss them in a forum that is not hateful or colored by anger. But when did your 'father's side' last live in scotland? I'm not trying to prevent discourse but i think sometimes Americans (I'm guessing from your name you are that) think that they have some responsibility to meddle with Scottish politics when they really have little or no understanding of them. Globalisation is the dominant force in the world at present, nationalism is often used as as vain attempt to stop it. Scotland should move in whichever way is best to allievate its vast poverty,(cont)

I regard myself as Scottish, but also as British and European.
My heritage is Scottish as well through my Grandfather (Knox) and I am 41 years old. I learned of my heritage a little later in life but Roy and Ronnie have helped me to identify with my Scottish heritage in a way I would have never dreamed and it is through their music that I have developed the pride and the dedication to Scotland that I possess today. Cheers!
I know that many are bitter about the "united kingdom" and Scotland's place in the grand scheme but the wonderful thing about history is that it can help us to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. All Scots, even those across the pond here in America, need to pitch in and work together to realize an independant Scotland. It can be done and it will be done. Thank you friend for your comment.
Only those and such as those had the power or the vote to join the Parliaments all those years ago. The common man had no say. And lets face it... who put the "Gentry" into the positions of power.....? It wasn't a pretty time in history.... but that shouldn't mean we beat ourselves with sticks and wear sackcloth and ashes for ever... get up and do something about it- instead of self pitying whining!
I wish to visit the south of Scotland. Such a history! To have such places as your "backyard" is something to never take for granted. I am American of Scots/Ulster-Scots ancestry. If not for the Scottish Borderer and those that left for Ulster during the Plantation scheme, there would not be an America. It was the Border character that formed my country.
WOW - that's filmed at Scotts' View! I live like 3 miles from there and have been there more times than I could ever remember. Thoroughly recommend a visit to the Border land!
Brings a tear to my eye everytime. Sandy, I agree with you to some extent, but please don't think like that. There's still plenty nationalists left to fight for the cause. I'll fight to free Scotland until the day I die if need be. I'm only 20 so there's hopefully plenty of fight left in me! We just all need to play our part.
It was a very sad day when the late Roy Wiliamson passed on to the otherside, I truly believe that they were the last breath of Scottish Patriotism and we will never, rise and be the nation again, as we should have because us Scots are a very laidback clan of people and we have only the music and memories now of a FREE SCOTLAND. I come from Highland stock but I am a Scots-American. I would gladly come to Scotland and help her however I could to gain her independence. Patriotism is not dead in Scotland, it has merely laid dormant and simply needs to be awakened again to revive the desire and the fight. Don't fret, we Scots across the water look to the day Scotland will be independant and are willing to pitch in to help it happen. Alba Gu Brath!

Many thanks thistlewarrior. I have to agree with you. If all Scots around the globe were to come back home, where would everyone stay? There is enough to do I am sure that even if you didn't stay in Scotland, you could find some way to help. Our clan organization here in the states is reclaiming old clan lands around Loch Long and Loch Lohmond and creating a highland cultural center so that students can study how life was when the clans were still functioning. Take care my friend.
