  • Oops..."when I tug too hard".

  • I was sitting here crocheting and using the big ball of yarn rolling around on my desk and I saw your video. Thank you so much. It is going to make crocheting so much easier. Don't have to chase the yarn ball around when I tug to hard. Thank you again. You made my day!

  • Loved this, thank you so much!

  • Tammy this is the video that brought me to your channel many, many moons ago. I had forgotten all about it until it popped up as a related video to a crochet video I watched. Do you crochet or knit and if so I would love to see some of your work

  • Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

  • thanks so much this helped me alot

  • BRILLIANT!!! Thank you so much!

  • yes but i cant find the end on my skein! o: like right wen i got it

  • I started spinning the wool around my thumb and I think I sorta strangled it! It's red and it feels weird! :P

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am using center pull yarn and it became a mess! This tidied things right up!!!

  • thank you!!! i was looking and looking and looking for a way to do those huge bulks of yarn, but couldn't! this was really helpful to an amuter like me

  • OMG! Your Like Betty Crocket, But with Yarn!!!!

  • I have tried many things to hold my yarn but I love the little bag. The one thing I use is a 2 liter plastic bottle, cut the bottom off to get the yarn in. Make sure you keep the bottom of the bottle to slip it back on after you put your yarn in. Keeps my yarn CLEAN!!

  • very helpful cheers!

  • I just want to say, I use a bowl for my yarn :D And thank you so much this was so helpfull I have to undo a scarf i made for someone because it gained holes from stitches not being stitched right. Thank you for undoing the problem of haveing a pile of yarn being tangled lol

  • I have to say that this was the best presentation MINUS the 1:50 THAT it took for the yammering ;-), but YES, I AM A MAN, AND YES, I CROCHET and this was the best way I have seen to create a ball of yarn.

    Thank you!

  • Wow thanks so much this was super useful. I kept trying to make a ball but i only made that stupid one that rolled all over the place =) Thanks so much!!!

  • thank you so much for sharing this tip!! I hate knitting and crocheting and the ball is rolling around all over the place!!

also, i'm glad that you found the middle piece of that yarn. i was just crocheting with one just like it and was going to let you know. so, i'm glad you found it.

    thanks again!! Very helpful!!

    ~Lebiya

  • Very helpful!

  • I like just using the thumb to start wrapping it. My friend taught me a method where you start wrapping it around the thumb and index. This is a much quicker method! Thank you for sharing!

  • Wonderful! that its gonna make my life easyer thanks!

  • To get the end yarn from inside the skein, you have to really dig in the middle for the end. A big chunck can come out but at least you have the end from the center.

  • @mcaqb I actually found the end after I made this video and dug around in the center of it, lol!!

  • @mcaqb This was the best video on making a center pull ball of yarn. Thank you so much, I crochet and it work for crocheters as well as knitters. I usually make my own ball of yarn and this was a little more useful. Thanks again.

  • Like you, I have rolled some yarns into a ball and you're right. It gets annoying when they start to roll all over the place. Your video just saved me from getting a yarn winder. Thank you for the technique. I will give it a try.

  • @mcaqb Thanks for watching, hope you find the technique useful

  • thank you very much! previously i had tangled up a skein of expensive yarn so bad but this method is really easy and works well!

  • @hippiesotong Thank-you!

  • 500 character? please... thats not enough to tell her how much i thank her.

  • @JJkillyaify You are very welcome, thank you!

  • lol the music in the background is from dead like me. this is cool as kid i would wrap yarn around my thumb but i had no idea i was on to something good to know i was . thanks for this vid

  • @minnieclips The music in the background is a song I found on Jason Shaw's website (audionautix)

  • @yoyomax12 cool, it sounds so similar to the shows theme song

  • haha i would have neve figured this out lol! thank you!!!!

  • @89lillyflower Thanks! :)

  • Thank you so much! And you were right, other ppl didn't know, this helps me a lot!

  • @Mimilicious84 Happy my video helped, thanks for letting me know!

  • Love this. I've always just wound yarn into balls, and i'd have a mess when they would roll across the floor. Now I'll do it this way and save myself frustration. Thanks for showing this.

  • This was awesome! I had searched for a method and yours was the best technique and it is so easy. I have been crocheting for thirty five years and while my grandmother knew how to do this I was never taught> Thanks for the video.

  • @abcnoyes2 It seems such an easy method, I knitted for many years without knowing either. Thanks for letting me know

  • great video! seems very easy too, I am going to give it a try, I always manage to find, when I get to the middle of my project, a nice big chunk of yarn that I have to detangle from the skein. so I am opting to roll my yarn into balls, thanks so much for showing this!

  • @cantertweet Detangling is no fun, been there, done that, lol

  • Im thinking that you could make your own pull skein holder with some plarn....I have some bags to cut up and wind, so I am going to try it and see. Plz let me know if you have tried this already.....I loved this video, thx so much for your time and effort in this. It has really helped me. :)

  • @lynnelynne1 Never tried this method with the plarn, but I think it would work the same way as yarn.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Very well done! I haven't seen this method before and to see it so clearly explained in video is just fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to share. And I love your accent :) Youtube is so great, I'm sitting here in Australia and just learned a new skill from a lovely lady on the other side of the world! Please forgive me if I get it wrong, but I'm going to guess Canada - Ontario maybe. Thanks again!

  • @LavenderBliu Yes Canada and Ontario! Very impressive! Are you from here?

  • @yoyomax12 No, I'm Australian through and through. But I've seen enough Canadian TV programs over the years to spot the accent :) It's actually one of my favourites. Would love to visit your country though, looks stunning.

  • Awesome! thanks so much!

  • @greenchickpen you are welcome!

  • Wow i have been crocheting for years and i never knew that thank you!

  • @stargazingeyez You are welcome! I searched all over for a video on how to make one of these, couldn't find one at the time so I made one :)

  • Thanks, you are really paying it forward! I just subscribed to Suezeeknits. When I get a chance I'll check out her videos. I appreciate you taking the time to help me!

  • yoyomax - wow, this is the first answer back I EVER got from youtube.!

Anyway, yes, it came in the shape of a pretzel. Michael's doesn't have the machine that knitting stores have (at least the one near me doesn't, neither does WalMart) I will look for the video! Thanks SO much.

  • @Shifraeliezar I try to answer every single one of my comments, someone did that for me when I first started on YT and that is what got me involved in the community. I'm going to suggest that you go visit a friend of mine on here called Sue, her channel name is Suezeeknits

She knits with those hanks of wool and my be able to help you if you ask her a question.

  • My yarn came in a different format - i remember my mother used to go to the knitting store and they'd put it on a machine. What do I do? I don't have any knitting stores near me - they all closed! Just Michael's. Please help!

  • @Shifraeliezar Did your yarn come in a hank? Like a large pretzel shape? There is information online on how to wind a hank into a usable form, just google it. (ie. how to handle a hank)

Micheal's has a wool section and so does Walmart.

  • well..... Ican do this OR Buy a big expensive ($250) machine.... Hmm??? Thank you for the tip!! :D

  • @Oscar307975 You are welcome, this method is more time consuming, but yep, a lot cheaper :)

  • i hope your my aunt ... because u know how to knit and i love knitting and you know how to cook and i love cooking aND YOU KNOW HOW TO BAKE AND I LOVE BAKEING AND YOU KNOW WHICH RECEPIE TO BUY erm which country are you from ... let guess canada right ??

  • @XXloverbabeXX1 Yes I live in Ontario Canada. It does sound like we have a lot in common :)

    Thanks for watching. :)

  • can you do this for chrocheing also? please answer

  • @MsUreshii I suppose you could, I've never tried it with crochet thread before

  • owwww that hurt my finger

  • @TheMegabop lol

  • THANK YOU! I'm one of those that just didn't know how to do it - now I do thanks to you!

  • @4barnsmammastube Glad I could help! :)

  • Thank you sooo much for the vid!! i was freaking out when i was at the endish of my yarn but it was just getting to be such a mess!! Excellent solution :D

  • @ladymistreschristine Thant's exactly what happened to me, great way to wind the extra yarn

  • Thankyou for the video. I'm new to the Knitting hobbies and I really enjoyed your video.

  • @speechless00 Thanks for stopping by, enjoy the knitting.

  • My Grandmother showed me how to make the center pull skein with your thumb 45 years ago here in Southern California USA. This is the only method I use to make a center pull skein. I thought I was the only one who knew how to make a center pull skein in this way. I think it is the best method. Thanks for sharing.

  • @57Moo This is a very quick and easy method. I found the idea on-line!

  • I have a question... with the second type of skein that you showed, I always get tangles!!!! even with the center pull, while I am trying to roll it into a ball, any suggestions?

    PS great video

  • @kamaraline33 I find that even the wool that comes in a commercially made center pull skein still tangles for me too, especially when it gets to the last little bit. it is frustrating, I am not an expert enough knitter to have a solution for us!

  • Cool!!

  • @iammamarine Thanks!

  • THank you so much!!! I am so glad you share this info.

  • @lisamr40 When I first made this video I couldn't find one on YT anywhere, no there appears to be many of them. Glad you found this one useful.

    :)

  • Thanks so much!!!

  • @cheesepuff87 You are welcome!

  • @hotdog1997 Yes I know

  • omg I love this! Thanks for sharing!

  • @BlueSilence1985 You are welcome!

  • Thank You!

  • @txsweetie78 You are welcome!

  • nice!

  • @clarity023 thanks!

  • What is the name of that yarn pouch. I wanna get one! Thank u!

  • @mchllwoods It was bought from a company called Regal Gifts. I think they are online now. It was many years ago, so I don't know if they still can be found there

  • way to cool and very well done neat and tidy like the method best i'm going to try that thks for sharing

  • @ilovstodance You are welcome, glad it helpe

  • My mom had an large gallon size pickle jar next to her chair on the floor that she put her hand rolled ball of yarn in to keep it from rolling on the floor. She would have loved yr method!!!

  • @jcrefasi1 The pickle jar idea is actually a great one!

  • Thank you! :)

  • @HeidMamma You are welcome!

  • the big Skein that you couldn't fined the center pull for, what you do is reach into the center hole you see and feel for a large ball pull that out and unravel til you fined the end, start knitting, and after all the center ball you pulled out is used up, it turns into a normal center pull skein also the bag you put your ball into at the end of the video, its made so you can walk and knit at the same time, you wear it on your wrist.:3 also great video!

  • @Wrongsidefox I ended up finding the center pull thread after a while! It is jammed in there and tangled like you said.

  • Hi, Im using my sons channel to view your videos...lol anyway, your video was very, very useful. I had the same issues and never thought of making my own center pull ball. thank you for teaching us. great tutorial, fun music. thanks.

  • @haloking623 I do all my balls of wool this way, I like that it doesn't roll around when you are knitting.

  • Thank you so much for this. I only recently found out it was even possible to do this by hand, and when I read instructions online I couldn't understand what the person meant. Now that I've seen it done, I will totally be doing this.

  • @DruggieCockDragons Glad you enjoyed the video! Sorry for the late reply to your lovely comment.

  • Thank you so much!

  • why dont you put it in abowl the ball

  • @twilightluvrize A bowl is a good idea for at home.

  • THANK YOU SOOOOO much for this tutorial! i hope i can find a bag like that one soon :)

  • @bebelatina305 Happy you found my video useful! The bag comes from an online catalog company called "regal gifts". I don't know if they still sell them though.

    :)

  • THANK YOU SOOOOO much for this tutorial!

  • Very helpful. Thank you for making this video.

  • @shoppershaz Very glad you found it helpful!

  • T Y!

  • Do u know where they got that cool bag just for center pull skeins?

  • @TheKittykat100 That bag was given to me as a gift many, many years ago. It comes from a mail order catalog business called "Regal Gifts" It still exists, but I don't know if you can still buy them there.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • @heartshaped10 You are welcome!

  • I've been using another method but yours looks much better! I will have to try it out now. Thanks.

  • Oh yeah and I can't find the center pull on that brand of yarn. That brand is the reason I've been searching on an easy way to make a center pull ball or skein.

  • Thanks!

I searched a little while for a how to on making a center pull skein, I did find photo instructions but no video. So I made one! I figures someone could use it. :)

I find that even the balls that seem to be center pull, get hopelessly tangled toward the last half of the ball.

  • This was such a great help. Thank you!! I'm teaching myself crochet and the yarn for my first real project didn't have a center yarn to pull and I was thinking there had to be a better way. The instructions are simple, easy to follow and I have a perfect ball of center pull yarn now. THANK YOU !

  • Glad I could help! I really found it so much easier to knit with the center pull skeins!

  • You have no idea how helpful. I don't remember ever doing crochet, but the last time I had a skein of yarn in my hands has to have been more than 35 years ago. I'm having to rip my rows out because I know I'm not doing them right, BUT..........the yarn isn't giving me any trouble now that I've got it wrapped in a center pull ball. Thank you again.

  • Great video Tanmy.....I didn't know how to do that either..... Im currently chrocheting a baby blanket and just finished a ball of yarn going to use your method when rolling the next one.....I hate it when the ball goes flying all over the place....: o )

  • I've used a couple of the balls that I wound using this method and they pulled nicely right until the last few inches!

  • Very cool!! Thank you so much Tammy. I'm trying to teach myself to knit so this will come in handy. My Grandmother's always knitted & crocheted so I remember rolling the yard up if they couldn't find the center pull string. I crocheted a baby blanket a few years ago & I ended up balling the yard because the center had gotten so tangled. I'll certainly use this the next time.

    Pam

  • Hi Pam, the center pull string is hard to find sometimes!

  • Phew.....

A reminder of why I made a good choice becoming an electronic engineer. I can spend hours on end drawing and etching a printed circuit, but that would drive me nutz. :-)

  • lol! Not as difficult as making electric circuits I'm sure!

  • Makes perfect sense to me:-)

  • good! lol

  • It is made in a ball so if you have a cat they can play with :)

Very cool! you need a see through bottom so you can see how much is left as you go.

  • The skein kind of deflates like a balloon as you knit, kinda neat!

  • Okay, Tammy, I always wondered WHY people would roll their yarn into a ball when it was all nice and wound and you just pull the center pull. I did not know there was a different type that didn't have a center pull. Oooh a yarn ball holder! (lol) I'm glad you found a way to do it so your life is easier

  • Some foo foo la foo yarn comes in hanks (long bundles) that you have to roll up some how to use. Some of the commercially produced supposed center pull skeins tangle CONSTANTLY as you knit and it is just easier to roll it into a ball before starting.

I'm thinking that a larger yarn holder might be a good craft project for someone who sews...... (just in case you were bored)

  • Knitting/crocheting is something I've always said I wanted to do and never done. I have always wondered one did this with their yarn. Learn something new everyday. : )

  • Thanks for watching and commenting even if you don't knit or crochet! You are a first class subscriber. :0

  • that's cool i wish i knew how to knit

  • There are many books and tutorials to learn how, very easy!

  • Wow thanks Tammy! This is helpful! Esp when I do my Harry Potter scarves again

  • You know that with all the hp stuff I've made, I've never done a scarf. I would have to go Slytherin, I like the green.

  • Whoa girl you always amaze me! Wonderful tip! Hugs!

  • Thanks Melissa!

  • wow I will have to try that, I didnt know you can do that

  • Hey Ang!

  • Great tip Tammy! I have not had to wind any yarn yet as I have been able to find the center pull in the skeins I have been buying lately. But, I will keep this tip in mind if I ever have to wind a ball because as you say, a center pull is just so much easier to work with! Love that little bag too!! :D xoxo

  • Center pull is the way to go. I find that even the ones that look center pull tangle up on me a lot. Does this happen to you?

  • Sometimes a big chunk will pull out of the center on me but I can usually untangle it easily. Haven't had much of a problem. I wish though, that I had a good yarn store near me.. I have to depend on places like Hobby Lobby and Michaels to get my yarn and their selections in wool are limited.. :((

  • I didn't know how to do that! Thank you for sharing! I will definitely do it!

    Love you!

  • Love you!

  • ok how long did it take you to roll that ball???? Love that thing your sil bought you have not seen one of those either

  • It took about 5 minutes or so, not long.

The wool holder came from regal gifts I think.

  • That is a cool yarn bag you have their. It's a pretty color too.

  • Thanks Jen!

  • Your so welcome : )

  • My cats would love that ball ;)..

  • Too bad postage is so expensive, I would send it to you. lol!

  • Yea postage is something I so know. The kitties has enough balls anyway lol.

  • double Brilliant!!!!!

  • Thanks!

  • good job!

  • Thanks!

  • Awesome! Your SO creative. LOVE it!

  • I appreciate that! Thanks!

  • I have been crochet since i was a teen and I didn't know how to do this. i was just content with my ball lol Thanks for the tip!

  • Balls to work just as well I think, but the yarn does "flow" out of the ball with less tugging.

  • Very clever and I love the little bag. I have purchased Bernat yarn before, lots in fact, and they have always had a center pull. Sometimes I just had to dig for it. Haven't bought any in a while tho. I get goofed up when I get real wool hanks! OMG what a mess I have made over the years! I usually put that on the back of a chair...LOL

  • Okay, I re-checked the large Bernat ball I showed in the video and I dug around in the middle and SURPRISE!!!! THERE WAS THE CENTER PULL!!! I will have to re-check all my wool now, Thanks Barb.

  • Yeah, the stinkers make you work for it! I knew it has a center pull....somewhere! LOL

  • what a great idea!

ill have to send this to my sister, she is a knitter and as far as i know she is not aware of this technique. (though since im not a knitter maybe she is doing this all the time, lol)

    xoexo

  • Hello Eden!

I wasn't sure if I'd make this video and everyone would be commenting things like "well DUH! of course that's what you do with the yarn! we all do that!"

    so far, so good.

  • who cant use tips for daily use?

maybe we could all do such vids. even if some things seem obvious to others it might be a life saver for some

i for one have been helped by others and shocked at how fargin' simple the answers were.

    xoexo

  • Tammy! It's brilliant. Thank you so much. Yes, as you did it, I can see that you're protecting the end and keeping the 'opening' clear. Otherwise, you'd cover it up with windings and block it. WOW. Thank you so much. Such a simple thing, yet I've just been making the same balls you did. Whoohooo!

  • I was hoping that someone else would say that they wound the yarn into regular balls too! I thought I might get a ton of comments saying "DUH! of course that's what you do!"

  • I just learnt something nice i can share it with my aunt ...thanks...:)

  • Thanks! I was hoping that someone might benefit from it, the technique was a revelation to me!
