I'm 28, I haven't seen this for probably 23 years, but I could still remember all the words to the theme. I've always been a big fan of experimental animation and foreign movies, and my open-mindedness regarding art is probably hugely indebted to this show.
Back when our cable company got Nickelodeon in 1981, I used to dread staying home from school sick because Pinwheel would run up until about 1pm. Even then, I loved Nick, but was already too old for Pinwheel. Now I'm 37 and occasionally find myself humming the theme song.
This really takes me back. I used to watch these while sitting on a play school bench coloring in my coloring books. After this show would end I would watch "Bill Cosby's Picture Pages"
I'm 27 and utterly mystified that I know no other kids in my age group who know of this show, yet they know "Doug" and "Rugrats". This show is classic. It's iconic and I don't envy the poor kids today being raised on utter shit.
@ccipollini1984 i'm the same age...i assume a lot of the people you are referring to had cable when this show was still being aired... , nicktoons didn't come on til 91', i had to go to other peoples houses to watch it
That's right... When they first started Nickelodeon, it was called "Pinwheel". Over the first year they re-imaged the channel as Nickelodeon but kept the "Pinwheel" theme for the cool programs. My daughter was born in 1980 and the first thing she learned to sing was Pinwheel. Thanks for the post.
I feel sad for children today. Anyone born around 77 knows the 80s was THE golden age for kids shows, education, and the best cartoons. I slide even a few early 90s cartoons also
We didn't have cable when I was little (I was deprived as a child) so the only time I got to watch Pinwheel was when we were staying at hotels. It was so special to me! And I never forget the song. I'm 32 now and, watching this, I'm still angry at my parents for not allowing me to have cable back then.
@papatoony Same for me except we lived so far out in the boonies that we couldn't get cable and my folks didn't wanna get a dish. Only time I saw this was when I 'd be at either of my grandfolks that lived in town and had cable.
@sylia103 They probably still ran this in the early 90s. Back then they did run things that were over a 5 months old. Hell in the 80s they still ran things from the 50s. Unlike today where things are unknown and considered outdated if it's more than a year old.
@DeviousPhantom There was no need to back then, things were actually GOOD on TV, the best of the 50s's 60s' 70s and 80s. Back then everything was not considered obsolete if it was over a year old like it is today.
I'm really taking a trip down memory lane seeing this. Old school. I totally forgot about this show. The theme song gave me a flashback of my youth. Crazy. I miss the eighties :(
My aunt, who used to babysit my sister and I when we were in kinder and 2nd grade said we used to drive her crazy with this show on all the time... This song swam in her head all day. Now a grown up with a daughter of my own, my daughter drives me crazy with her DVDs repeating all day. VERY nostalgic to hear this again after about 27 years.
Oh this is wonderful! Watched it with my kids and can sing the song. So many sweet cartoons they showed. Does anyone remember "Hatty Town"? On today's NickJr the only thing resembling these innocent shows is "Max and Ruby". All the other Nick shows are so much more crude or coarse. Bring back Pinwheel for the little ones!!!!
i just watched this and tears started flowing, i remember watchin this as a child. you took me back to a time when both my parents were still alive, i was a happy kid and all was right with the world. thank you. :)
I remember this so well from when I was just barely five years old. And I didn't have any biases towards it or Sesame Street, I loved them both.
No, I don't think kids are being cheated out of good shows. There a lot of quality educational programs now that are just as good, if not better than the ones I had at that age.
This is putting tears in my eyes. Too bad they've run Sesame Street into the ground, or else that might move me to tears as well. Oh how I used to love that veggie cart!
unfortnatelly good things end the onlly thing i hated pinwheel was on all day today's special should be reran it was a very good show i think if it was reran i have to watch it
0:14, there's Aurelia, hello there. 0:17, there's Coco the mime fixing a sign. 0:22, there's Sal and the Admiral Bird. 0:24, there's Ebeneezer T. Gooooood lord. My grandpa had so many VHS tapes filled with this show (as well as other 80s era Nickelodeon shows) that my brother and I used to watch all the time growing up (in the late 80s / early 90s).
yeah this was a really good show...I loved this as a kid...even my mom remembers the little intro song...thanks for making my day...I will sing this for the rest of the evening
It's amazing how visuals stay with you after you haven't seen the visuals for over twenty years...that's the best way I can describe what I just experienced after watching this video!
Wasn't "Pinwheel" about three or fours long? The way I remember it, it was on ALL morning.
Anyway, this is super-nostalgic stuff for me. I'm 34. I grew up on this in the early 80s and haven't seen it since. The theme song will always remind me of staying home sick from school (or lying about being sick so I could stay home).
@sygo7g True. True. To be honest, if i could take back those days i would. Sitting back watching Nick JR. Enjoying life as a child. How good was that.
This show was so from Nickelodeon's early days. Puts Spongebob Squarepants and Dora the Explorer to shame. Shows how far we've come in that department.
OMG I remember this song, but have not seen this opening since I was a kid, it brought a tear to my eye. I wish I could go back to this time. Thank You for posting this.
I distinctly remember this show. Was it on in 1986? I remember coming home from school around noon and the show would be on and I used to watch and eat lunch. Cute memories. Who was the host or whatever?
Wow Pinwheel and now Spongebob. I wasn't born in this timing but this is a haunting and awesome at the same time that Pinwheel was the whole start of one of the most famous cartoon broadcasting network!
I remember watching this show. I loved it, It was WAAAAYYY better than Sesame Street. Plus and Minus, Silas the snail, Today's Special, Simon,..........fond memories?
After reading most of the comments I can relate to almost everyone who posted. It's so weird how this show brings us back to when we were real young. With that, I got nostalgic too. Crazy but good.
I used to watch this show when i was home from school when sick, or during the summer because their was nothing else to watch besides the price is right. The 6 hour blocks, and the boredom were grueling for me. I was more of a fan of the later afternoon Nickelodeon when the real stuff was on. I remember they slowly phased this show out of the lineup. The hours just kept getting shorter until their was nothing left. The show must of ended wayy before its demise. I always loved the intro.
my sister is 4 years older than me and we would have battles of epic proportions over the remote. Thank you Pinwheel for giving me strength to kick her assets.
I'm getting emotional! No joke...I'll be 33 on the 28th and I remember this like yesterday! I watched it with my sister and we loved it!!...Anybody remember "Simon" the chalk drawn dude that had his own little show within this show?! I miss this stuff, thanks so much for this post!!!!
okay, quick question...does anyone really remember viewing this? I DO! Wow. Crazy huh. Anyway, just having a moment. If you love and remember this, I love and will always remember you. All lameness aside. Thank you :) ♥
I'm 32 y/o finna turn 33 this month hetero man with 2 kids, but I must commend the poster. @schemer1991 madd thankx fren! It's not the original but this is defo good enough...might be 2nd, not an afficianado (sp) but can lay claim to afore mentioned statement. Wow, you just ......well..simply wow...thanks schemer1991
@M200XL I'm not sure about that as I didn't watch the program myself, but perhaps another of the Youtube viewers familiar with it can better answer your question
@robatsea2009 Had to be one of the first two seasons because thats is CC Loveheart aka Caroline Cox as Coco the Mime. A different woman played the part after the second season
@robatsea2009 I watched this as a kid. I am not sure if this is the first or second season intro, because it's been so long since I watched this program.
@M200XL This was the opening of the first season as well as the second. I don't think they changed anything. It was my first nickelodeon show when I was young too.
@M200XL Its from first season. Coco had straight hair in the first season. In the second season it was another actor playing Coco. She had curly hair. :) I love Pinwheel!!!!
@M200XL This was pretty much the staple opening. It didn't change from season to season like some show themes do, where it might feature new characters or an "upgraded" version of the song (see: Sesame Street). The same characters remained throughout all seasons of the show.
I certainly remember this show! Me and my sister watched this FAITHFULLY in the summertime. It came on all morning. Nickelodeon wouldn't be Nickelodeon if it wasn't for this show!
@scoot1105 Hah! I love finding stuff like this and seeing the comments. Me and my sister watched this show too. They dont make good shows for kids like this anymore!
Oh great, another children's show that will give me nightmares for days.

my sister is 4 years older than me and we would have battles of epic proportions over the remote. Thank you Pinwheel for giving me strength to kick her assets.

What kind of drugs were those network guys doing to put on a kids show that was FOUR HOURS LONG??
.
I remember Ebeneser growing "weeds" in the basement. I bet he had a meth lab down there too.

Was this intro from the first or second season? Just curious. This was one of my first nickelodeon shows when I was 2-3 years old.
M200XL 1 year ago 10
@M200XL I'm not sure about that as I didn't watch the program myself, but perhaps another of the Youtube viewers familiar with it can better answer your question
robatsea2009 1 year ago
@robatsea2009 Had to be one of the first two seasons because thats is CC Loveheart aka Caroline Cox as Coco the Mime. A different woman played the part after the second season
NukeIt2Bdone 11 months ago
@NukeIt2Bdone And that different woman was Lindanell Rivera.

@robatsea2009 I watched this as a kid. I am not sure if this is the first or second season intro, because it's been so long since I watched this program.

moonchild4202006 1 year ago
@M200XL This was the opening of the first season as well as the second. I don't think they changed anything. It was my first nickelodeon show when I was young too.
watchmerun2 10 months ago
@M200XL Its from first season. Coco had straight hair in the first season. In the second season it was another actor playing Coco. She had curly hair. :) I love Pinwheel!!!!
Utubing74 9 months ago
@Utubing74 Coco looks good with straight hair but looks even better with curly hair.
andrewcolinwilson1 3 months ago
@M200XL This was pretty much the staple opening. It didn't change from season to season like some show themes do, where it might feature new characters or an "upgraded" version of the song (see: Sesame Street). The same characters remained throughout all seasons of the show.
PatrickRsGhost 9 months ago
This always blew away Sesame Street to me.

I actually got an email correspondence from the original lady who played Coco.
That was a great day. Wonderful woman and a total hippie!

sweetchild3201 1 year ago
@sweetchild3201 You can buy them online. Look at the nickelodeon website or just search for it. It's like $15 for the whole series I think.
watchmerun2 10 months ago
@sweetchild3201 Yeah I think you're right. I just might buy them soon. Maybe share? I dunno LOL

In 1983, I was home sick with pneumonia, and I watched this show every day. I was 8 years old. Hearing this brings me right back to the moment!

I certainly remember this show! Me and my sister watched this FAITHFULLY in the summertime. It came on all morning. Nickelodeon wouldn't be Nickelodeon if it wasn't for this show!
