Did you build your stand? I just bought a SWC for my 120g tank a few months ago and found it slightly taller than my existing which made for a real pain in the butt not fitting under my tank. Advise people to check dimensions of the sump and space under the tank before adding equipment....DaveFromBrooklyn.
@fishtk75 Glad you like your SWC! SWC is doing fine as far as I know. Their president got into some trouble with the law with brining in livestock that was supposively "improperly labeled"
where did you buy your swc skimmer i was going to purchase the extreme 200 for my 125 fowlr but the shipping is over 70 dollars and i could not find any dealers in the us
The owner of Salt Water Connection (SWC) was found guilty of 18 charges under the federal Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act for smuggling protected live rock, sea horses and clams from Indonesia. He faces potential fines in excess of $1 million plus the possibility of jail time. ...Just sayin!
I saw ur vid of troubleshooting a aquarium and I was wondering how much would it be for u to aquascape my aquarium?? I like what u did with his lol. :D
I'm just starting a saltwater tank for the first time. I brought the tank, sump, pump, and protein skimmer from a guy, but I'm not sure if he gave me all the part to set up the protein skimmer. It looks to b homemade but there are no leaks. How and what should b hooked to the protein skimmer?
Does the water level also need to be at a certain height for the v2 skim range (and do you think they are good skimmers for the price?). if so does that mean i will have to put the skimmer in the first section of the sump, because i was intending to have some filter media in the first section? thanks
Im setting up a 25 gallon cube with a eshopps 10 gallon sump, I cant deside what skimmer to get, would you recomend the swc 120? Im afraid it would be to large and wont beable to develope a proper foam head due to to a lack of organics in the water. Do you think this skimmer can work on suck a small tank? Other skimmers ive looked at are bubble magus nat 3.5, and the aquaurousa classic 135. Send me a pm and let me know what you think, your videos are very helpfull btw.
im in need of a new skimmer and was wondering why you chose the cone over the extreme i have a 125g and was either thinking about the swc xtreme 250 or the swc 180 cone your opinion is greatly appreciated thank you
swc skimmer is amazing ,i run the 150 in a 85 gallon.guy who makes em shop is 20 min from my house.if your not running swc ,you need to step your game up
my skimmer doesn't use electricity it only has a green tube that goes out and then goes into a power head but the bubbles don't bubble over please help .
5:40 is the most important part, lol, I had a drain hose and it overflowed the gallon jug I had it running to and got some nice smelly skimmate on my stand bottom.
Thank you for this video! It helped me finally make the decision to go with this skimmer. I also have a 90 gallon that will most likely be moderately stocked. I currently have a EuroReef RS90 and it will not be enough for a moderately stocked or heavily stocked 90 gallon, so I ordered SWC.
It was a tough decision between the SWC and the Super Reef Octopus XP1000sss. The Bubble Blaster pump on the Octopus was the main seller on that skimmer, but more features and same great reviews lead me toS
@wesleyforbes Glad I could help out! The BB pump has a great name attached to it, but I'm not convinced it is worth the extra price. You'll be happy with the SWC.
First off. i love your videos's they are very helpful. I'm fairly new to the saltwater hobby.I started off with a 26 gal bowfront and have now up graded to a 55 gal tank. I want to move all of my equipment under the tank but it is not drilled for overflows. my question is this. Is there any way to pump the water under the tank to a sump withoout drilling the tank?
@ReefGuy2008 you can use an hang on the back overflow, but I DO NOT recommend them. I've had friends who have had the HOB overflow and both of them had flooded houses on several occasions. Lots of people will tell you that they've run HOB overflows w/no issues, but I won't take the risk.
go to my blog mrsaltwatertank (DOT) com and read my post about "3 pieces of equipment you should never use"
I would like to purchase a good protein skimmer like yours. What do you think of this one below:
Vertex IN 100 In-Sump
Protein Skimmer,
Generation 2
PS-VT-IN100
I have a 72 gallon tank and has been running for over 3 months now with a SEARUNNER protein skimmer but I haven't seen any junks building up because I couldn't keep it from working right (over-flows). I'm ready to purchase another one. Thank you for the good videos by the way - A BIG HELP for new hobbyist.
@h346224 I ran that skimmer for several months and its a good skimmer. I'd recommend it. Are you buying it new? If not, make sure you submerge it and make sure it runs (produces lots of bubbles, the pump isn't loud, no cracks, etc).
I Have A Question I Have a 30 Gallon Tank And Im Using A Hang on back Aqua Clear Filter. Know, Im planing on buying a protein skimmer. Do you recommend me to Hang it on the back Even dough i don't have and wet & dry filter????
Sorry about that mrsaltwatertank. I can't keep the water level at the neck of the skimmer. As soon as i turn on the skimmer, the bubbles climbs up, up to the waste chamber, thus fills the waste chamber with wet foam that turns to water after. Please help....
I am a new hobbyist from the SF. I've purchased a second hand protein skimmer from a well known saltwater pet store in San Jose. I bought an ocean runner protein skimmer. The problem is, its bubbles keeps overflowing to the waste chamber thus rapidly collecting water in it. I have done pretty much everything that I could to make it work and maintain the water level only to the neck line of the the skimmer but it seems like the pressure from the pump is too much. What was I doing wrong??
@h346224 I'm confused - can you keep the bubbles at the neck of the skimmer, but later on it overflows, or every time you put the cup on, it overflows?
The xp 3000 didn't have a good foam head n thinking if I went smaller I would have a nice dry steady head foam. Would a xp 2000 be better? Really want to get it right the second time around. What do u think? Thanks
Hey I have a 125g reef with a high bioload. Livestock: 4 tangs~4-6in, purple/yellow/blue hippo/blonde naso tang, copperband butterfly, 3 wrasses, yellow fin, cleaner, melanarus wrasse, school of 5 green chromis, 2 anthias, school of 3 bangaii cardinals, 2 mandarins( very cool vid of mandarins mating! btw), 2 clowns, n a couple more smaller fish. Would a SWC 160 cone skimmer be adequately sized or would u recommend another? I tried an SRO XP 3000 cone n was oversized for my tank.
brentolio...good call on going "plus one" on the skimmer. I recommend that strategy to everyone.
Your skimmer probably isn't building a foam head due to 2 things: 1) the airline might be blocked, 2) your bio load (what you have in your tank) might not be high enough for it to break in yet. Can you let me know what you have in your tank in terms of fish
star polyps not encrusting on rock...hmm..what is your lighting situation like (type/watts/age of bulbs) as well as your water parameters?
I like the videos, very helpfull. I am using a red sea prizm skimmer up to 100 gal on my 32 gal reef tank. I recently added it a week ago and I can never get a steady foam to come up, and also when I feed phyto feast, the skimmer reacts very weird to it and starts pouring water up into the overflow so i have to turn the flow down for a little bit until it settles. Have you ever seen this before? What causes star polyps not encrust to live rock?
Mr99Reef...the green algae on your sand is probably sucking down your phosphates, I've seen tanks that are covered in algae w/ 0 phosphates. Since you are running phosphate media, places to check would be how much you feed and your RO/DI water (Is the TDS @ 0?) going into your tank.
Also, AEFWorms are tough so its possible that the flatworm exit didn't kill them all, or the eggs. Same the wrasses...they can't get to every inch of the coral. Did you treat multiple times or just once?
Phosphate i get 0, but i have a bloom of small thin green yellow slime on the geavel and on the rocks. i run 2 reactors. one with high end carbon and Pura phosphate remover. I cant see anything on the corals. I had flatworm before but between Flatworm exit and 2 sixl ines wrasses didnt see tham again.
Bleaching corals are the worst and every tank is different so here are some places to look for what might be going on with your setup:
- Alkalinity (shoot for 7-10)
- flow (hard corals like lots of flow)
- Phosphates (should be 0)
- Pests. Check to make sure you don't have acropora eating flatworms or other pest.
- Lights - how old are your bulbs? I replace mine every 6 months to be safe since as bulbs age, they lose their strength and ability to help corals grow.
I get corals and they do beatiful for months and months then a slow bleaching starts from the bottom up. and its suck cause i keep the Cal. @ 440ppm, Mag @ 1325, Ph 8.3, Nitrate 0, ammonia 0. I just dont know what to do. Help
I am glad i found your vids. I sick of that old school La fish guy. I have a question for you. i have seen your vid. on the red bugs and your right that med. does work. I have use that in the past and it works. My question is this: I have a 120 reef tank and water test good on everything. I have Coralife Elite metal helide with 2 250w 10k with 2 act 03. I have calcium reator, PM protein skimmer, chiller and wavemaker.
