If you don't like how the government of Canada is handling the use of their fighter force, go complain to your local politician. I can appreciate your concerns, but there is probably little fuel actually "wasted" in this. Pilots, even those is the 18, need a certain number off take-off and landings to maintain currency and all of these will count towards that requirement, meaning they don't have to do it another day ie burn fuel then.

Also, it is forecasted to bring 20,000+ people into the area which is great for economics and virtually all money is going to local charity. Hard to call that a bad thing

strictly depends on the distance set for the "race".

All the cars, and even your R1, have an acceleration curve that is rapid at onset but tapers off at the high end of the speed window. Generally, the faster you already are, the less acceleration you have.

The 18, on the other hand is the opposite. Initial acceleration is slower, but the engines and afterburners produce more energy with every extra ounce of speed. Shorter distance, you win. 1/2 runway length or more? 18 wins.
