Has this SuZhou dialect (蘇州評彈) ever been spoken among the populace living there? If so, when?

Or, was it only used in the Flower Houses (Brothels) to entertain the noble & wealthy men during the reign of Imperial China?

Today, where is this dialect still spoken? Or, is it only preserved through the songs & music of SuZhou as an art form?

I find the pronunciation of 蘇州評彈 is similar to Cantonese, but very different from Putonghua !!

@soulglow8 the dialect had been spoken amongst commoners in the city of Suzhou. When Suzhou was the cultural center of the region in the Ming and Qing dynasty, it was cool to be from there, so a lot of cultured men and women from neighboring regions also speak the dialect. The dialect is still very much alive today, and almost everyone who was born and raised there can speak it.
