Police officers are trained in martial arts like krav maga disarming techniques which are implanted into their brain function that causes their body to react instantaneously to the sight of a weapon. As any military operator or experienced combatant will tell you, your mind doesnt automatically come up with a plan fitting the situation in the second the weapon is pulled, As you sat through about a minute and had time to think.

My brother's 8 year old once came running into my backyard with a 12" hunting knife in his hand that my neighbor's teenage kid had left lying around. I told him to drop it, but he didn't listen to me. So, I walked up to him, grabbed him firmly by the wrist with one hand, grabbed the handle of the knife with the other, and pulled the knife away from him. Oddly enough, I didn't have to tackle him, nor slam him into any asphalt. And, neither of us were hurt. Maybe I should get a job training cops?

Sucks to see something like that, but that police woman handled the situation properly... The woman had a knife and was threatening to stab people... They probably could've tzed her, but then the woman could've died at her age, and again, the police would be criticized. She wasn't threatening to stab people. She cut her seat belt with the knife, got out of the car with it, and started calling for her daughter. She tried to walk around the cop but the cop grabbed her and body slammed her. It was completely uncalled for. The woman couldn't walk a mile a day and she treated her like she actually threatened her life.

This lady lives in a nursing home and her daughter had her that specific day and left her in the car while she went in and went shopping. The knife was in the daughters car and when the old lady got up and was somewhere alone and unfamiliar she went crazy. I guess she actually threatened to stab many people and another lady not shown in the video is the one who called 911. The elderly woman only suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital that same day.

Honestly, there was a better tactic to use in that situation. For one thing, police officers are supposedly there to protect and serve the public interest, which includes using good judgment when handling dangerous situations. That entails adjusting your methods to the level of severity of the situation. An elderly woman with a knife is dangerous, even more so when making threats, but she has A CANE. She isn't going to stab you or run from you. Suck it up, take a skin wound and seize her knife.

Police officers are trained in martial arts like krav maga disarming techniques which are implanted into their brain function that causes their body to react instantaneously to the sight of a weapon. As any military operator or experienced combatant will tell you, your mind doesnt automatically come up with a plan fitting the situation in the second the weapon is pulled, As you sat through about a minute and had time to think.

My brother's 8 year old once came running into my backyard with a 12" hunting knife in his hand that my neighbor's teenage kid had left lying around. I told him to drop it, but he didn't listen to me. So, I walked up to him, grabbed him firmly by the wrist with one hand, grabbed the handle of the knife with the other, and pulled the knife away from him. Oddly enough, I didn't have to tackle him, nor slam him into any asphalt. And, neither of us were hurt. Maybe I should get a job training cops?

The age is a big factor. She is not just elderly, she is frail. Her medical condition is not a chimera. It's not a dream. It's real and it affects everything here.
I also note that the old woman seems to be the wrong color. Given precedent and tradition in this country, that is a factor in the behavior of the officer certainly.

Sucks to see something like that, but that police woman handled the situation properly... The woman had a knife and was threatening to stab people... They probably could've tzed her, but then the woman could've died at her age, and again, the police would be criticized. I'll always criticize the cops when they're in the wrong, but I think they handled this properly, and it's nice to see the woman's injury wasn't severe.

She wasn't threatening to stab people. She cut her seat belt with the knife, got out of the car with it, and started calling for her daughter. She tried to walk around the cop but the cop grabbed her and body slammed her. It was completely uncalled for. The woman couldn't walk a mile a day and she treated her like she actually threatened her life.

yah but my grandma wouldn't threaten people with a knife. just saying. people complain about police brutality, but most of the time, the people wouldn't be brutalized if they hadn't put themselves in those positions in the first place, like swinging a knife around, threatening people, and not listening to police orders.....orders like, "put the knife down"....what if the police lady tried to be more gentle and got stabbed? and died? lady is just trying to do a very hard job.

No, you go by the book and take down the person to avoid getting stabbed. She asked repeatedly for this woman to lower the knife, and once she refused to lower a deadly weapon, then that's justifiable cause for the cop to do what she did. I do realize the woman had Alzheimer's, and it is sad and unfortunate, but the cop acted appropriately

Michael, the meaning of the phrase was that if she threw her on the ground she would be rediculed like she is now, but on the other hand if she didn't, the old lady could have hurt the police officer or other people. So it's a lose-lose situation for the police department. I think proper action was taken, it's just the force used was a bit excessive for a 86 year old woman. The cop is lucky the old lady was ok.

I have worked with people like this woman before, most of the time if you are very gentle and speak with a soothing voice they will comply and give up there weapon. of course you may have to use force on them but give them time, try to reason before you practice kung fuu on them.

I've done it armed only with a press pass.
Should have seen those punk NYPD assholes when I returned to the scene of the accident with a 3 foot machete I took from a guy swinging it armed only with my radio.
Or the time I captured a robber by telling him if I had to shoot him (bluffing), I would make it hurt as it would be 8 hours of paperwork.
Then NYPD came and abused me becuse they couldn't get a collar as the old lady was scared off by the perp during the show up.

Do you think she would have been "charged" if the video hadn't been made and publicised? The police did do the right thing in the end by not charging her, but I think only because of the public backlash that would have occured if not.Hopefully she can get the medical attention that she needs.

You've got to be pretty stupid to hold a knife at a police officer. Why should anyone be treated differently when holding a weapon at an armed police officer? Certainly what the officer did wasn't normal, but this wasn't a normal situation.

How about going behind the old lady and making her drop the knife... I'm sure she was trained on pressure points in the wrist for people holding things in their hands. Or, you could try to use the nightstick to knock the knife out. You would think you can overpower an 80-something year old without throwing them to the ground. You would use that as a last resort just like you would with a pregnant woman.

This lady lives in a nursing home and her daughter had her that specific day and left her in the car while she went in and went shopping. The knife was in the daughters car and when the old lady got up and was somewhere alone and unfamiliar she went crazy. I guess she actually threatened to stab many people and another lady not shown in the video is the one who called 911. The elderly woman only suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital that same day.
