  • haha...whoaaa I have opposable thumbs

  • Everyone should watch the review of 2001 which confused matthew made.

This movie is 99% only landscape and crap floating in space. Nobody needs to watch it. It lacks completly story, almost no dialog and with the exception of HAL there are no characters. By the way the HAL Story contributes nothing to the story of the movie because there is none.

    Nuf said.

  • @bigowl9408 well, man's ancestors came from Ethiopia, which though not necessarily ad barren as that, was no picnic.

  • Genial!

  • Thumbs up if you ever named your iPod "the monolith"

  • Now watch this...

    v=YqsGBEk_Uy8&feature=related

  • Thumbs up if you watched this 4,000,000 years ago.

  • A new twist could been that it was a monolith containing the knowledge of good and evil left for man to feast upon and not an apple, that lead to his evolution and will lead to, his inevitable extinction. May be the film has a Freudian side where the aliens want us to self destruct and not join them.

  • Funny how all film directors always shoe the earth as barren long before we had started cutting down the jungles?

  • @repelghosts that's because you were too young too understand it. My father tried to get me to watch this when I was a kid, star wars was in it's hay day, early 80's we just laughed at all the classical music and went and played with Darth Vader and Luke, then the 1st time I ever sat and watched this I was 25, it was Jan 1st 2001, I thought the start was slow but I enjoyed it. The end blew me away. I now love this film so much. You have it on blu Ray?

  • Thumbs up if youre watching this in 2012

  • L I K E : sii tee dejaronn dee tarea ver esttee viideoo!! hehe! Atte: Diianna PPS xD

  • I cannot find the link between this part with the rest of movie....

  • @nabakhshetyan It's about human evolution. The man is learning to use tools and the monolith (disposed there by another species) is a witness of his evolution. In the future, the man keeps evolving and the other species keeps observing this. I hope you can understand me, i hardly write in english.

  • @polvoyjazz Actually, from what I gathered based on the novel, the Monolith was left there by a superior alien species which somehow triggered the evolution of early man. The alien species discovered that intelligent species they discovered throughout the universe was severely underdeveloped so they wanted to promote their growth in intelligence.

  • i have never been at the secret USAF base at Clavius

  • The monolith always gives me goosebumps

  • @TheSlappygoose lol it's only a black object

  • Greatest film ever.

  • this film reminds me of psychadelic drugs. It makes no sense but its powerful.

  • The monolith represents secret knowledge.

  • @kundalini1128 I like that idea! I have thought of the monolith to be inspiration.

  • intersting music : i have a sci fi novel blog : suro invasion

  • I had one of those things turn up in my garden the other day, the only urge i had was to eat a cheese and pickle sandwich.

  • This video should have been entitled "Monkey goes Bananas"

  • thumbs up if you think people who ask for thumbs up are sad attention seeking cunts.

  • This is raw footage of Iranians around one of our captured drones.

  • Then James Cameron came up with the "Terminator" and the sequel SKYNET is a play on this theme!!

  • does anyone here see the resemblance of the black monolith - with a COMPUTER SERVER? Think about the computer character HAL 2000 it basically wants to take over every decision that the human wants to take.......then think about the influence that the company IBM had in its hayday...!Arthur C Clarke was a visionary and was thinking that the computer was going to make man's decisions for him IBM look at the order of the letters with HAL! Food for thought!!

  • "H" comes before "I" in the alphabet

"A" comes before "B" in the alphabet

"L" comes before "M" in the alphabet!

  • @MovieMad007 Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick stated that it was purely coincidence. HAL is an acronym for Heuristic ALgorithmic.

  • @MangoEvidence maybe but what do YOU think?

  • incomplete scene...

  • One day, someone will say Thumbs up if youre watching this in 3001.... If humans still exist by then

  • @funboy1231 not if youtube keeps changing their layouts...

  • Thumbs up if you think they should remake this with Steven Seagal as David Bowman, Adam Sandler as Gary Lockwood, Tim Allen as Heywood R Floyd and Gilbert Gottfried as the voice of Hal 9000 and directed by M Night Shyamalan.

  • Today mankind is closer to be a monkey breaking bones with a stick than be a astronaut in space

  • Makes me want do my homework lol

  • @Iriannae You don't understand what you're watching, not one bit. It's not aliens. Study Bill Cooper.

  • why'd you edit out the ape battle? seeing him throw away the bone doesn't really make sense in this context.

  • personally i think this is the most exciting part of the movie

  • Saw it when I was 10...When I met him in 1976 and I said i did not understand the 'monolith', Mr. Asimov said the remedy is ,"watch agin and repeat as often as is necessary'.

    True anecdote.

    Thanks for this...Gem

  • @repelghosts Asimov? It was Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke.

  • 6:10-6:30, incredible

  • This may be one of the finest pieces of art ever conceived by the mind of man.

  • @punkypenguin321 yea but having humans in ape costumes is a little distracting lol

  • @bodyboarder3452 Kubrick hadn't planned to show the early humans as hairy apes. He had Stuart Freeborn creating a "primitive man" prosthetic make up, but he couldn't find a way to show them in full figure without getting in trouble, since they had to be naked. So, he settled for the "apes".

  • @punkypenguin321 I don't know about that, but its probably one of the best directed films in history

  • @punkypenguin321 cahnge your comment so that it says it is one of the finest peices of art concieved by stanley kubrick. cause its kubrick that makes this jmasterpeice wat it is.

  • @malows1234 I am not obligated to satisfy the impolite requests of YouTube users who don't make the negligible effort to proofread their comments for elementary spelling mistakes, lack of capitalization and poor grammar.

  • @punkypenguin321 While I have to agree it's annoying and detrimental to our children's grammar in the future. This is the internet where there isn't much need to be grammatically correct when just trying to get a simple idea across. It seems it's you who needs to adapt to what's the given reality instead of putting down people who aren't doing a thing the other 95% of internet users aren't doing.

  • @punkypenguin321 i agree, it says so much.

  • @punkypenguin321 No this is one of the worst pieces of art ever conceived by the mind of man. Even to call 2001 art is a crime. It is just garbage.

  • @grueti21 It's funny how you don't support any of your claims with evidence. And if it's so bad then why does the Boston Globe claim "The film is as exciting as the discovery of a new dimension in life."?

  • Thumbs up if youre watching this in 2011

  • @BloxinPwners

Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2012!

  • @BloxinPwners hell yeah! especially that so far two "Space Odysseys" years have passed, 2001 and 2010 lol

  • @BloxinPwners AW!!!!! -.-

  • @BloxinPwners Nope!

  • @BloxinPwners

No I watched this two days ago in 2012

  • @BloxinPwners I come from the FUUTUURE.

    January 22 2012.

  • @sonicfangamer2 IS THERE FLYING CARS?

  • @BloxinPwners Well if there are, then it must be in their early prototypes.

Though the japanese (still) have some epic technology!

  • @sonicfangamer2 OMFG THAT YEAR MUST BE COOL! WAITING FOR IT

  • @BloxinPwners 2012 my friend

  • @PizzaKingOfCake sir i wrote that comment in 2011 sir.

  • 6:07

I love this scene. It feels almost like all of human achievement originated from that one moment.

Kind of funny that the usage of weaponry is that defining moment, though.

  • Best scene in the history of cinematography: not only a punch towards the Adam and Eve BS but also on top of all the Alien Intervation of the Darwinian Evolution. Bottom-line: brain orgasm!

  • Spore!

  • Funny, I still see this going on right down the street from me to this day...

  • The Monolith represents Evolution, neat fact is that during the intermission you may of noticed the monolith music playing on a black screen. fact is the screen is black but it represents the face of the monolith as Stanley Kubrics main objective was to open a new level of thinking in the audiences mind. The intermission represents the audiences evolution. This is also apparent when you consider the dimensions of the monolith to the dimensions of wide screen film and the scenes after this

  • I believe that the monolith is the smartness and genius of a being. I mean, the monkey understood that with the bone you can hit heavily without hurting your hands. and yeah, when David tries to stop the computer the monolith comes up again

  • Do you see the Alien face on the upper right corner on 2:41 ?

  • @Iriannae If you really cared to help me understand, the one you called a "fundie",then you could have replied to me, but you did not. If Yahweh translates to "Lord" then why not say "Lord"? We are speaking English here, right?

    זו עברית

"Lord" commands respect among English speakers and is much more clear, so I guess I should thank you for clarifying. I respect the Lord and hope you will, too. Next time I see someone using "Yahweh", I'll tell them what you said. The "Lord" FTW!

  • How he hell did religion get brought in to the interpretation of this film?

  • @RootARC You just brought up religion by using the word "hell", albeit in a strange context. Hell is in your vocabulary for a reason. It's real.

  • @field16

Actually, the context in how that I used it was in the manner of an expression, one of disaproval & bewilderment. Just because its utilized as an adjective does not mean it exists. As Abraham Lincoln once stated "Heaven or Hell is a state of mind, its just a matter where you think you are"

  • @RootARC Alright, I guess we agree then. You used the word "Hell" in a strange context. I don't know why you are now quoting a dead president. Jesus has many more powerful quotes, and he is alive. He is also returning and this time, his mission will be different. You should fear Hell, because it is real.

"Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." - Jesus

  • @field16 Why do you believe as you do? What made you believe it, or if you always did, then what makes you believe it?

  • @supertrinko Based on your channel layout, I would guess you are looking for a way to introduce doubt. Yes, I believe Jesus is real and living, did everything he promised, and is preparing to return, as he promised.

Most of the world believes that Obama won the last election, is now president of his nation, and will run for another term. Why do people believe this, too? It seems people believe that which comes from what they consider to be the most credible source of information.

  • @field16 Actually I doubt I would ever be able to convince you of anything. I'm just trying to learn more about the reasons for belief.

I guessed that you believe Jesus is real and living and all that. But 'why' do you believe it?

  • @supertrinko You are right if you mean you cannot convince me of anything against Jesus. He is who he said he is.

My suspicion for you, is why would you want to introduce doubt to those with weak faith? Are you asking for your own knowledge or to challenge their faith? And if you are challenging their faith, why would you do that, since they have never done anything against you? You should be happy for those that believe in Jesus and obey his teachings, as he taught peace and love.

  • @field16 I will happily answer your questions, but would you first do me the honour of answering mine?

'why' do you believe jesus is real and living, 'why' do you believe what the bible says is true?

  • @supertrinko If you asked me for the password to my online checking account, and I asked you why... would you say, "I'll tell you why I want your password after you tell me your password?"

I am questioning your motive and don't have time to argue with those that have no interest in learning the truth. I will likely ignore all future messages under this video as no one appears to be seeking truth.

Do you people want to be sleeping in works of fiction forever? Wake up! Jesus is returning.

  • @field16 "would you say, "I'll tell you why I want your password after you tell me your password?""

Rather a different situation there. You're not asking me why I'm asking you about something.

I have already told you why I'm asking. I will quote it: "I'm just trying to learn more about the reasons for belief."

I'm trying to find out about this "truth" you're trying to spread. Hence why I'm asking:

Why do you think jesus is returning (soon?)

    Why do you believe it?

  • @supertrinko That's like saying, "I'm asking for your online checking account password because I just want to know it." Really? But why? Why do you want to know? Your answer is unacceptable. You have a motive and you are not disclosing it.

  • @field16 I have expressed my motive.

I literally just want to learn why such people as yourself believe what the bible tells you.

  • @supertrinko That is not a motive. You are stating the knowledge you WANT, but not your motive for wanting it. I am done wasting my time with you.

  • @field16 Why do I need a motive for wanting to learn something? I am curious of religion, so wish to learn about it, that is all.

"I am done wasting my time with you"

My my you have put a lot of work into avoiding a question, you could have just said this in the first place, but your efforts were focused on trying to lead the conversation in another direction.

  • @supertrinko "I'm just trying to learn more about the reasons for belief."

This is good reason to ask about religion. I am Atheist I tell why Christians believe what they believe. In Christianity believing someone else is responsible for your action allows you to commit any action without accountability. Christanity is cult for crminal by nature. Let me give you example:

I steal candy and you get punished. I keep stealing because I not see you taken to special room and fingers are broken.

  • @supertrinko Well... there is a historical record that states that Jesus Christ lived. Like many self-proclaimed atheists, you look to the lowest common denominator of argument of human failing and use it as a tool to deny that there is something beyond us. You confuse the efforts of flawed humans with the legitimate message of God. The great thing about faith is that I don't need to prove it... you just accept it Just ask Jesus into your life and He'll respond.

  • @VeritasLuxMia

"and use it as a tool to deny that there is something beyond us."

None of this conversation has been about proving that there is "something beyond us". I have spoken to plenty of people on that subject, this one was just about "why" field16 believes as he does. I had no intention of using anything he said as proof that there is no God, that's a fallacy.

"there is a historical record that states that Jesus Christ lived. "

This I'm interested in, care to elaborate?

  • @VeritasLuxMia I asked, I got no response. Well, crickets chirped, but that was about it. They chirp every night, whether I talk to imaginary friends or not.

  • @Iriannae It's a poor translation. That's like how Mark 10:25 refers to a camel going through a needle, when traditionally the text used the word gamla in Arimaic, meaning rope.

And I've never heard about the Canaanite thing. Makes more sense with the concept of Elohim.

  • @sobektears That would be incorrect. You really should do some study before you post in public.

  • @MaxCreditScore Dandy sir! What a high quality rebuttal! You have bested me! We have come to an impasse and I must yield to your fine ripost!

  • @sobektears The Eye of the Needle is a gate in the old city wall of Jerusalem.

  • @Iriannae "It's just a movie . . . enjoy!" I'm with you but try to tell that to all the people who are convinced Kubrick personally faked the moon landings. It's just a movie - a brilliant one - but, Golly!, does it trigger fights!

Monkeys, bring out your tapir femurs!

  • @TheStockwell What? People believe that the moon landings were faked? If that's the case, then people are easily fooled, aren't they?

Kind of like how people were easily fooled into believing that God was faked by.... well, I don't know who. Maybe it's more like saying Jesus was faked by... Hmmm, there apparently is no motive to fake the existence of Jesus. If people really believed in him, that would make wars, hate, and fear obsolete. Anybody actually want peace any more?

  • @Iriannae Is it OK with you that today, our men and women are ordered to kill other men, women, and children? It's ironic that you want to go back to watching a flick when people are dying TODAY. You complain of the past, but it's happening NOW.

The word you used, Yahweh, is no where in the King James Version of the Holy Bible. Jesus, the one that is returning soon, never hurt anyone and taught love and peace. Pray to him if you want to be saved.

  • @field16 LOL wow. You realize that the Bible wasn't originally in English, right? Elohim is the name of God in Genesis, Elohim translating to Gods from Hebrew (let us make man in OUR image, etc.) Every other time he mentions his name in the Bible he refers to himself as Yahweh. As for Jesus Christ, I hope you realize that was not his name.

  • @sobektears What do you think is funny? You are contradicting what I told you. So, prove it. Give me a book, chapter, and verse in the KJV that uses the word Yahweh. I did not find it. If you could give a reference, and if I can confirm it, I would be happy to admit my error. But you have not provided evidence, so I will continue to wonder why you use that name. I prefer to call him God or Jesus.

I hope you realize "Jesus" is in the KJV many times. Of course you know! Why argue?

  • @field16 KJV is not the earliest version of the text. Sure, if you devote your entirety to a religion that is a poor translation, you can go with KJV. And Jesus is a terrible translation of his name.

  • @field16 Yeah that's uh.... that's pretty much what's been happening ever since the dawn of man's society. People being ordered to kill one another, most of them all in the name of some god (including yours). Forcing non-believers into submission with violence, or torturing innocents until they confessed to sins they had not committed (truly popular in the medieval times). I could go on forever. Religion sure imposed their ideals... viciously.

  • @elvampe13 Yes, you are right! This world has become so wicked. That's why it's about time for Jesus to return. There are many acts of hate done in the name of false gods. There are many.

Have you ever heard of a military attack being led in the name of Jesus Christ? (I haven't.)

  • anyone want to explain to me what the giant black stone was (i know it's called a monolith).

  • @Iriannae Jesus taught us to not repay evil for evil. After you bonk them on the head, you reap what you sow. When Jesus returns with his angels, don't say I didn't tell you.

Do not shed the blood of another man. His blood is his life. To some of us, life is precious. The others will have to answer to the Lord.

I have done my unbiased research. Your channel is unavailable. Why? Mine is open.

Prepare thyself. Repent while you can. Peace.

  • is that black thing... a PS3?

  • @Iriannae Imagine how silly these tools look when you are relaxing in the Garden of Eden with all the food you could possibly eat. The "black monolith" taught them how to go against God's ways.

Lucky for us, God slays the enemies of the righteous. Did you actually expect God to sit back and let the wicked prosper forever?

God will authorize deadly force yet again against the wicked, to save the righteous. If you are not OK with that, then you better repent in a hurry. 3-2-1... Jesus.

  • ANCIENT ALIENS

  • I thought the bone landed on his head

  • The Monolith is the IDEA, or more importantly, the WORD.

  • @technologic21 The Monolith was placed on Earth by Aliens to monitor our progress as a species, the one on the moon transmits to the one in orbit around Jupiter when we have progressed that far, when man finally reaches Jupiter the monolith in orbit becomes a portal, and Dave is taken aboard a ship. he later become our next step in evolution .

  • 0:44 Thou shall not steal.

This upload did not show the next scene where the creatures murdered others of their own kind. (Thou shall not murder.)

Did the black monolith teach them how to sin?

    Where is the white monolith?

  • @field16

There is no white monolith. Color does not dictate disposition either.

  • @RootARC Yeah, not in this movie, anyway.

  • the scene with the monkey and the bones is such a profound one: the notion that it all began with the single idea that you can manipulate the world around you to achieve something. The birth of higher intelligence. Alien monoliths aside, the greater idea here is so simple but mind blowing.

  • Name of music at 5:30?

  • Great movie the best sceen is when all (13) pre man touch the monolith ?????????????

  • I think is ingenious too and how its all left to the imagination and open to interpretation Thank you for this

  • To understand this movie I had to read a book - worth it

  • @Grzeliq Clarke's book provides one interpretation of the film, but the film is open to many interpretations. Clarke and Kubrick wrote the screenplay, and the book was being written at the same time as the film was being made.

  • This is probably one of the best movies i have ever seen. The monoliths has such an intense creepy presence, and are in my opinion the best cinematic representation of the unknown, in movie history. The visual effects are stunning, not just by 1968 standards, but by todays standards. This flick truly is a piece of art and will remain so for centuries to come, i'm sure. This is a movie that really makes you think about the almost absurd reality in which we find ourselves. It's a great universe.

  • whats the fuckin point of this movie. i just fuckin saw it

  • Well apparently The Monoliths were built by a super advanced race of aliens who wanted to speed up evolution, and that's why the apes are able to use the tools...Also The Baby/foetus is supposed to be Dave...He's now become one of those highly evolved aliens...Anyone wanna drop some acid?

  • this is amazing jump cut!

  • The first time I ever watched this film, I had just gotten my wisdom teeth removed the day before and was hopped up on Vicodin... I cannot express the level of "the fuck is this shit" I was experiencing during this scene. Or the whole movie, for that matter.

  • Pop some LSD an hour before this starts. Then just fucking enjoy.

  • OMG! We watched this in 6th grade!!

  • London Riots.

  • Whats the name of the music from 5:13???

  • @scavoexe ''Also Sprach Zarathustra'' de Richard Strauss

  • Just enjoy the beautiful and wonderful and thoughtful platter of the arts tha Kubrick took three years to make and the joyous soundtrack from Strauss! Or don't, and shut the fuck up and be ignorant!

  • that monkey is like the john travoltas of monkeys, but notr really.

  • The monolith was a challenge..... A CHALLENGE FOR MAN! On the Moon, it learns that Man has not gotten far, on the way to Jupiter, Man had to fight his tools (his tools had replaced him in his evolution). Man wins. In the end, Man had to face his final challenge: his death. When Man was eating his final supper, he broke his wine glass. The glass was broken, but the wine was still there. Thus the star child is born. Man, not tool, has taken an evolutionary leap!

  • @louielouie11224 Damn I feel so fucking smart, but in all honesty, I learned it from some else.

  • @louielouie11224 i always thought of the monolith as an observational item, just being there to watch. The final monolith I don't think was for man, but for the computer AI.

  • @Narajah The book by Clark explains things better, the movie was way over budget, and they had to wrap up the ending a bit, which strangly made the movie even cooler because it left it up to the audience. and yes the Monoliths were observational device to monitor our evolutionary steps. The Monolith at Jupiter, transported Dave to the Alien ship, where they kept him alive, until mans next evolutionary step, ( Space Child image at end ).

  • It is the expression of the monolith, it's paramount implication of progress stemming from an underlying force, universal and yet unknown in origin, expressing the endless cyclical continuity of the universe, boundless and beyond all possible expression.

  • daaaaaaang. spongebob b.c. (before comedy) refrence was ON POINT lol

  • a bunch of monkeys screamin at a rectangle... this sucks

  • This is Genius

  • Is there a witch around?

  • weidest thng in this film is leonard rossiter turning up

  • It's not even a very good match cut. I love this fucking movie and all, and it is undeniably a classic, but I don't feel like this should be called "the best match cut of all time" by anyone.

  • This is the greatest scene in movie history! it Got to be!!

  • Modern imagination - The Monolith is the foundation of inception of life on earth beyond a primitive form. Ancient Historical accounts depicted in biblical texts and exemplified on archaic structural walls or geological mass strecthing across various faiths as well mythology - advanced beings came to Earth and made man in their best interests to serve their needs and teach them new better ways of life. The reality for mankind is - Stanley Kubrick landed on the moon before Man did.

  • Errr... Why is this supposed to be confusing in anyway?

  • @Mrster What the fuck is confusing?

  • @fifafreak310258

Maybe I misintepreted the top comments then.

  • @fifafreak310258 made in the 60's and now 50 years later they still don't get it *sigh*

  • @Mrster see anyone you recognize?

  • @Wolfsbane909

    ...?

  • classic!..... wish he would have done A.I. like he was whanting to, it would have been a very diffrent movie.

  • no entendi que es ese coso que aparece al lado de los monos 2:30 que es eso?

  • @AldoAlonso89 Monolito, aparato para comunicar los avances evolucionarios a los extraterrestres.

  • No tapirs were harmed in the making of this film

  • this scene sums up the islamic religion. 'omg some rock appeared that we dunno where it came from. lets worship it then smash some skulls'.

  • This is what Eden looks like

Instead of an Apple its a giant Alien Monolith

  • @carlindelco maybe the need for the authority figure is a crutch, ie even if the God is vengeful, at least he comforts your emotional needs

You see the human being hates true independence and sovereignty, it frightens him, better submit to the vengeful god, the priest, the government, the doctors, anything not to be free and truely in selfhood
