To be able to play like this, you really need to learn the modes. Remember, Ed is a classically trained pianist. Most guitarists make the mistake of only playing back and forth across the strings... they never learn how all the patterns fit together. I used to watch these Ed videos and think, "How does he know where all the notes are? Is he doing it all by ear." No. Once you learn the modes, you know the language and this kind of playing makes sense and is easy.

Eddie must have hit the crack pipe. the dude played drunk for years. All of a sudden, he just couldn't play anymore. Perhaps the drugs fucked up his motor skills permanently. No bother, he gave me years of great playing I listen to. all the bootleg stuff, VH first 6 albums.
I think this video is a very positive thing. This proves no one just has magical ability, even a mega-talent like Eddie has to practice and maintain his skills. He says here he hasn't really played guitar in four years, and so even he finds the "Mean Street" intro hard to play.

Peavey dropped him after this. I guess he was so late and shit faced for this NAMM appearance, Peavey said "no more". Shame too,... the USA Peavey Wolfgang is still one the best guitars ever built.

I have to agree. I love Eddie, but he hasn't done anything new for many years now. He'll always been a legend, but it feels like he could have been so much more.

I think a big reason why Ed has trouble playing some of this older stuff is that his tone has constantly changed since he moved to Ernie Ball and beyond. Mean street and such was never intended to be played on this different equipment. Differnet time different voice. The newer tones/voices aren't ideally suitable for some of that stuff.
Tell me about it. I heard a huge shift in his tone when he stopped using Marshall amps. You can really hear it comparing Live Without a Net with Live: Right Here, Right Now. Even when going to see his live shows. Totally impressed by everything but his tone, which was really shrill.
Show a little respect the guy had alcohol problem and hes trying to deal with them give him a break just appreciate what he did for guitar we would all be playing rehased Zepplin licks without him .

Peavey dropped him after this. I guess he was so late and shit faced for this NAMM appearance, Peavey said "no more". Shame too,... the USA Peavey Wolfgang is still one the best guitars ever built.

I have to agree. I love Eddie, but he hasn't done anything new for many years now. He'll always been a legend, but it feels like he could have been so much more.

I used to think it'd be cool to just sit and watch Eddie noodling and coming up with tasty new riffs........boy, was I wrong........it's obvious he'd rather be off chugging some malt liquors somewhere than actually giving his fans a little taste of something fresh.

anyone ever noticed how he never seems to put much effort in when its not a big place or lots of money involved. Its seems like that anyway. having said that he is only burnt out from years of alcohol and whatever else... but having said that VAN HALEN ROCKS ANYWAY FOR EVER... i think thats actually part of what makes him rock so much...

you have to consider the time eras they were separated in. evh started all this shit in the late seventies. satch started showing people his stuff in the 80's. it's hard to compare different guitar players anyways.

I think a big reason why Ed has trouble playing some of this older stuff is that his tone has constantly changed since he moved to Ernie Ball and beyond. Mean street and such was never intended to be played on this different equipment. Differnet time different voice. The newer tones/voices aren't ideally suitable for some of that stuff.

Tell me about it. I heard a huge shift in his tone when he stopped using Marshall amps. You can really hear it comparing Live Without a Net with Live: Right Here, Right Now. Even when going to see his live shows. Totally impressed by everything but his tone, which was really shrill.
