  • Yeah....no. Esmeralda is dark skinned and has dark features.

  • Where's my Frollo?

  • Comment removed

  • im a gypsy too archdeacon and its not my fault either. Its my greatest honour to hoodwink the gadjos every chance i get.

  • Frollo looks like a dickhead

  • The face at 0:21 scared me.O.O

  • charles laughton absolute genius acting as the hunchback

  • Esmeralda is a blonde Gypsy...eh?.

  • @CrunkAddict Funny thing is that she looks 100% white

  • Dr. Meade was the main dr. in GWTW. He was the one that lived in Atlanta. When Melanie gives birth to her baby he tells Scarlett that there is nothing to brining a baby into the world. I <3 GWTW. Hope this helps:)

  • The man who plays the king played Dr. Mead in GWTW.

  • @FanofBewitched who was Dr. Mead again?

  • This sure is a silent film.

  • In my opinion, Frollo has a rather emotionless expression when he says "It's a matter of taste" in reference to the appeal of ugliness. I think that in truth, Frollo does know that people have the instinct which makes them disgusted by and attracted to ugliness, but I think that one of the reasons he calls it a matter of taste is because his sense of self-righteousness prevents him from acknowledging that he has base instincts.

  • Whoah whoah whoah WHOOOAAHHH!!! Hang on....The snooty uptight guy who is the founder and caretaker of Quasimodo is Jehan!?!! Making no sense this is!! It's supposed to be Claude and Jehan is supposed to be the drunkard womanizing guy O_O

  • @GypsyGirlEsmerelda The Catholic Church wouldn't allow the priest Claude to be shown as having lust for Esmeralda

  • Gypys aren't really a race though. They were just theives. The only race I know had gypys were white, indian and spanish..

  • Maureen O'Hara is so beautiful and great actress.

  • if i'm understanding correctly the nice older man is the king, loius xi of france. pretty sure the king wasn't that nice or forward thinking. but i guess some historical inaccuracies worked for the film. it's seems like it'll be a good one.

  • The church is sanctuary to all...The power of the law ends at this threshold!"

If only this were still true today... :/

  • Centuries later, and the French are STILL persecuting the gypsies.

For all the scientific and philosophical breakthroughs that have happened since then, we still haven't learned what truly needs to be learned.

  • hi, Hira. I think you are right - sorry

  • I may be in the minority, but I think Laughton's Quasimodo is absolutely adorable. Also, while I wouldn't necessarily fall in love with him, I'd all my time with someone as sweet and tender as Quasimodo well-spent.

It also helps that I adore Laughton and am a big fan. =)

  • After reading the novel, I kinda hate Esmeralda, or whatever her name is. I think Quasimodo and Frollo had such a good relationship. They were so close to each other in one way or another. Frollo is the one who saved Quasimodo's life, raised him as he raise his little brother, teach him a special language when Quasimodo became deaf. And Quasimodo also love him more than anything. Until Esmeralda came and ruin both of them. I really really hate her and her blind love. >"<

  • @hikarukaze7 If you favor a relation Quasi and Frollo you.... well!! wouldn't it be kinda queer????

  • @jotahuene Oh, sorry. I think you didnt understand what I mean. Their relationship is something like father and son, master and servant, teacher and pupil,... and I really like the way they were with each other before Esmeralda came. "Love" have so many meaning, you know. ^_^'

  • @hikarukaze7

Yeah, thats what makes this story all the more a tragedy in very way. Their are hundreds of messages through it, and I cried at least five times throughout it- I sobbed harder then any other book had made me D:

None the less, I really wish Phoebus could have just died, no? I mean, it seems every single good character died, and just left that....jackass alive!

  • @XxM00nSHADExX Yes, I agree with u. I'm so happy when Frollo stabbed Phoebus. But he was still alive! It really bother me! Hello! Why couldn't that good- for- nothing womanizer die??? He is the only one in the novel I want to kill.... Grrr....

*But sadly, my name has the same meaning as his: "the sun". So in French, my name is Phoebus, too! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO*

  • @hikarukaze7 Well she was only 16 and teenagers are kinda iffy.

  • @TheCrippledCrow Well, not every teenagers are as stupid as her. >_> Not every teenagers had such blind love like her either. In the novel, I felt like she nearly didn't know anything more to do than calling the name: "Phoebus" and it's damn annoying! I just want to jump in and slap her.

  • @hikarukaze7 well given her upbringing and lack of guidance or education by parents or guardians, what do you expect?

  • that hunchback is sure one ugly mother-fucker!

  • Charles Laughton gives such a great performance. He played the role just right.

  • 5:35

is the professor quill from the first harry potter movie or what? xD

  • What do you suppose ever became of all those extras out there in the crowd scene? Millions of people have seen them over the years but they probably died anonymous.

  • I'm not really used to a young frollo.....lol

  • lol she is pretty.. too bad she can't dance.... lol im jus sayin..

  • um.this might be kind of wierd....but Quasi is kinda hot! I LOVE his heart, strength ,and courage!!!As Ive said before....looks aint everything(how many cute guys have you ever known who are complete zeros!!!!}

  • Harry Davenport portrays such a nice king! :D

  • i dont know why HES CUTE SWINGING THAT HAT AROUND CUTE :D

  • this version have the best Frollo! :D

  • "Doesn't she make your pulse beat faster"

"Look at my pants sir...what do you think?"

  • i <3 this version of the classic novel

Laughton portrays a very believable Qausimodo !!!!!

Maureen O'hara is very beautiful (one of my favourite actresses)

Edmond O'Brien is so handsome!! love him!!

  • "I am the true king of fools! I battle for beauty and the ugly gets crowned! What greater fool can there be than I?"

  • Oh, Frollo <3

  • 5:05 - Just made me laugh!

I love O'hara's accent... I saw her in the Parent Trap prior to this and automatically noticed the difference in the way she spoke in this film... I feel it enhances the character!

    I love this version!

  • She's white because the idea of interracial relationships were taboo back then, especially in Hollywood when a minority couldn't play the romantic counter part of someone white. Seriously folks. This movie came out in 1939, the idea of a minority especially someone black taking on a romantic lead role opposite of a white actor or actress was unhead of and unwanted.

  • I love Frollo sooo hot o-o!!

  • I love Gringoire in this version, he's so cute!

  • Sir Charles Laughton in the definitive hunchback performance: this film set a standard for Hugo's classic and for any

    other actor in this role.

  • it only occured to me, because the disney wersion was the first I ever saw in my life, and also did a report for a school about gypies,

  • I love this version of the movie... This Quasimodo is almost EXACTLY what I pictured while reading the book... =( poor guy...

dammit, a few times in the BOOK i was gonna cry. lol In my opinion, this is the best film version of Notre-Dame de Paris XD thanks for posting!!!

  • she's pretty and plays a mean tamborine...

  • same^^

  • nn è ke qualcuno ce l'ha in italiano? muoio dalla voglia di vederlo nella mia lingu e gliene sarei estremamente grtaa se lo mettesse su youtube

  • "we extract pleasure from horror" that is so true in my case as i'm a complete horror fanatic^^ i love that line^^

  • This was Charles Laughton's best film in my opinion and his portrayal of the deformed hunchback is masterly. The carnival scenes must have been choreographed by someone who knew about the historical phenomenon of the "Day of Fools" when an anti-king was crowned. Just after Quasimodo is crowned take a look at the moment when a row of people "bow" to the new king - they do it with their backsides!

Later in the film there is a marvellous scene with Quasimodo playing the bells by swinging on them.

  • omg! phoebus is so handsome in this movie no wonder she falls for him

  • mikemoscow get a life

  • amazing movie

  • Charles Laughton is adorable as Quasimodo he acts just like a little boy and that is just so cute and heart renching at the same time. Love this movie!

  • This movie is so AWESOME - thanks for uploading!!

  • u gotta love Maureen o Hara!

  • You people are so used to the disney version. LOL.

Let's see you all talk about the Coplins.

  • I wonder about the people who think Esmeralda is ugly...how stupid, how blind do you have to be?

They did such a good job on Quasimodo, he's really sweet in his way...

  • poor quasi

  • The women Esmeralda is gorgeous. The problem though abou this time is that they did not have other races playing certain parts that called fro it. Like Esmeradla is Gypsy so I would picture carmel skin and dark hair but here she is so plae and white. She is still gorgeois though, i just thought that I should point that out. Thanks for posting this video by the way!

  • That is strange, in the Disney version she was dark skinned, back in 1939 mabey they discriminated against dark skinned people

  • the disney version is 1996

    this version is 1939

    get the picture?

  • I know its 1939, I just wonder why they used a white woman as esmarelda..

  • Because it's the olden days and it was about the race thing..

Heck in "Walking Tall' the main character in real life was white and they had "The Rock" a black dude play him.

They have blacks play white. Whites play blacks.

It depends on who makes it.

    She's real pretty though.

  • the rock movie was made in modern times, this was made in the days of discrimination I guess..

  • Actually, you're all wrong. It's extremely difficult using black and white photography to make a black person show up. Mostly all you would be able to see are eyes and teeth, very very little facial features. It's still like that with modern photography, which is why there are more light-skinned models than dark-skinned. Nothing to do with race, just photography.

  • today, when I see American movies, I see alot more black and brown actors now..

  • Actually in that point (colour of her skin) Disney would have been truer to novel than 1939 version. She was meant to have been Gypsy. Gypsies were dark skinned.

  • sorry, I don't even remember what the comment was ?

  • you had been saying how Disney version Esmeralda was darker :)

  • now I remember, I though how this version it was weird seeing a white woman play esmmarelda when most real gypsies of that time period were darker skinned.

  • I guess they were hoping people were ignorant or overlooked that fact. She did a good job though so to be honest it did not occur to me either watching it. Either that or suspension of disbelief!

  • @Akirameerkat: Not all gypsies are dark, just Romas. You get other gypsy groups such as Irish travellers and stuff who are white. Also, in the book Esmeralda wasn't a "real" Gypsy so she wasn't meant to be that dark. She had tanned skin, but was still Caucasian and not of Indian descent like many gypsies are.

  • whatever, it doesn't matter, I am busy with other stuff right now to worry what skin color people who lived 600 years ago were

  • sorry for the errors in my last message, my computer is being stupid.

  • you guys who say Emeralda must mean your ugly because I think she beautiful so you guys must be blind and Judgmental. maybe you see the actress in her other movies like the quiet man then you see how wrong you are.

  • What "King of Fools" used to be in the middle ages, "Idol" (or "Superstar") on TV is today.

  • So wait, in this one antagonist Frollo is Jehan and the Archdeacon is Claude Frollo?

  • Is that Charles Laughton's real face?

  • This version of Frollo is very similar to the Disney version he has the same hair, similar hat with the red band attached to it and a black robe.

  • Not really. The artist who designed Frollo studied art from the renaissance to come up with the concept. I personally don't see it other then the fact that they're both judges but other then that the design of the Disney character is completely different and their personalities aren't even the same.

  • 1:18, the guy playing the flute is hot.

  • Hmm, there's a Hunchback fan site called "Court of Miracles" or something, I'll have to find it and give it to you. :]

  • Wow, I don't know if any of you have seen any of the concept art from the Disney movie, but some of the sketches of Quasi look exactly like Charles in this.

  • where can i find them?

  • yeah; Disney was GREATLY inspired by this particular version. SO MANY things from this movie made it in the cartoon =D Ex. There's a shot of Quasimodo (can't remember when =p) standing in the midst of two pillars (among many) lol That shot is during the song Out There. XD lol

  • Esmeralda isn't that ugly. She's not drop dead gorgeous, but she's not ugly.

  • Is it just me or does it seems like the Disney-people based all of the characters in their "Hunchback of the Notre dame" on these actors? I mean, even Frollo ressembels a bit at this actor Frollo...

  • Um, this might be weird, but Frollo's kinda hot, yo.

  • I was thinking the exact same thing

  • @jarvisel you read my mind

  • @jarvisel i so agree

  • @jarvisel WTF? You apparently like uptight, arrogant assholes. O_o

  • @jarvisel a first, no? lol

  • about esme's beauty/ ugliness... i'll just quote frollo here :" it's a matter of taste!" you're not boumd to like this esme.

  • Whatever. Beauty is a question of opinion. I prefer Salma Hayek, she is veeeeeery beautiful.

But this Esmeralda is not that ugly, Esmeralda from 56 is really ugly.

  • Sir Cedric is perfect on that horse!

  • This Film is so Campy...love the Parisian Mob, so dangerous, so changeable,...like a Man's Affections.

Poor Quasimoto, now I know how Dick Cheney's Son must feel like; being locked up all the time in some dingy secret location in an Attic or Basement somewhere;-(

  • ahh, Frollo...I think we're due for a remake...

  • quasi is just suposed to be deformed not retarded

  • I love Frollo in this one. I like when he breaks the pointy king sticky, and yells 'stop'. So forceful.

  • i'm not being mean. i'm honestly asking. is quasi retarded?

  • Probably not. But he's deaf and spent most of his life in a bell tower, he probably just doesn't understand it well. I think when he put on the crown he was just playing along. Maybe thinking he was funny.

  • about Quasy's deafness. there's a very interesting thing i've noticed. did you see: Frollo and Quasy excange very few words in the film. their communication is mostly based on signs and eye contact. Fr's and Quasy's eyes, when they meet, are more expressive than a hundred words. notice fr's eyes after he breaks the stick (as if "bad dog! sit!") and Quasy obeys!

  • No he's deaf and doesn't understand what people are saying, therefore he attacks them out of defense since they already ridicule him based on his appearance. When they finally place the crown on him and cheer, he probably doesn't fully understand why but probably accepts it and is proud because they are showing some respect that they never did before. Political correctness and schools for the blind and deaf did not exist in the middle ages.

  • Woody Tobias Sr. did all the stunts!

  • OMG Phoebus looks JUST like the one in the Disney film^^

  • The face painted on that guy's bald head was pretty sweet. HEY GRINGOIRE, NO ONE LIKES YOUR EMO POETRY! That makeup is absolutely fucking amazing. The Disney movie drew so much visually from this movie it's ridiculous. He's kind of cute and childish the way he swings the crown around.

  • Haha, Gringore. France's first goth. However, he appears to be a slightly intelligent goth, talk about a rarity.

  • Oh, he's no goth, he's just a silly emo/beatnik polyester blend.
