  • He never moved his head during the drill, outstanding

  • At the first, the other DI called Jack Webb's character "Gunny," when he was actually a Technical Sergeant.

  • owens is at "present arms" which is a salute, and he cannot move until "order arms"

  • Gomer Pyle & SGT. Carter!

  • Pvt owen's used the word (you) that is no no in marine corps boot camp, a you is a female sheep as far as drill instructors are concerned , saying that to a drill instructor is like saying the won't to have sex with you .

  • pvt owens reminds me of me when i was in didnot want to go to sickbay but i didnot make it through basic training i accidently saluted a captain of the usmc with my left hand and wondered why i was in so much trouble

  • What a team Jack Webb as Sgt Moore and Clint Eastwood as Sgt Tom Highway from Heartbreak Ridge would have made. With these two we could rule the world.

  • Hey, Jarhead, er ,"Gunny", What's with the magic wand?

  • @NottheFacePlease they had them back then they carried them around when i was in in 1991 they didnot have them anymore gavethem the look of authority

  • @MrJesuschristisking Nice. I would think the sheer decibels would be enough authority.

  • @NottheFacePlease That's a swagger stick, officers and those in positions of authority carried them to prevent the troops from putting their hands in their pockets, giving a "relaxed" appearance or for overall correction. They're not authorized anymore.

  • Isn't that the late Don Dubbins?

  • Wow, this is intense! I've been a Jack Webb fan since I saw Dragnet back in the early 70s; and I never knew about this. Cool.

  • for that he should of made owens life miserable

  • because of private owens faking a headache if they were in combat pvt owens could cost the platoon their lives cuz pvt owens dont care owens knows better then that ooo did you all see that smerk owens gave that d i

  • because of private owens faking a headache if they were in combat pvt owens could cost the platoon their lives cuz pvt owens dont care owens knows better then that

  • because of private owens faking a headache if they were in combat pvt owens could cost the platoon their lives cuz pvt owens dont care

  • private owens should of been punished the platoon if they had been in combat because of private owens faking a headache is another reason he could give the platoons position away and theres no excuse for owens attitude

  • private owens should of been punished the platoon if they had been in combat because of private owens faking a headache is another reason he could give the platoons position away

  • that d i should of given him a head ache he would of never forgot

  • HAD A COUPLE OF THEM IN MY PLATOON TO

  • What bothers me about this segment is, If you decide the marines are not for you, You make Sgt. Moore want to vomit.

  • Pretty much the biggest problem with this film is that they call the SDI a tech. sergeant and i sure as hell know that Gunnery Sergeant is the proper rank for having 3 stripes up and 2 stripes down. Hell even Basilone was a gunny and he had died on Iwo Jima nearly 13yrs earlier.

  • This movie was made just before the infamous Parris Island Death March in April of 1956. Recruit training was greatly changed after the Death March. PFC's and CPL's were taken off the drill field (they were so good at keeping us up all night) and replaced by older and usually married SSG's and E7's who were not so interested in maltreatment and harrassment.

  • Sgt O'Neil in this movie was the only Marine from Parris Island used in the film. O'Neil was in fact Cpl Brown a DI in lst Recruit Training Battalion. He was an outstanding DI with a great DI voice.

  • I have a neighbor who was a DI in the Marine Corps, retired as a Staff Sergeant. Got a Bronze Star with V Device and Purple Heart, and got at least ten kills as a sniper in Vietnam. Badass, even at 60-something years old.

  • You is ewe. Stand by for what else happens.

  • I've never heard general orders so fast in my life

  • It was my honor and privelege. Salute!

    Sempre Fi,

    Ernst Becker

  • Seriously, God bless all the D.I.s People may have different personalities, but it all boils down to respect and discipline.

  • Jack Webb is a treasure

the clowns we have for actors now have no talent or class. Jack had both

  • Facing movements may only be done when the rifle is at order arms or port arms. Private Owens was at the position of "present arms" (equivalents of the salute while carrying a rifle). Gunny was indeed testing to see if he could rattle Owens. Owens passed.

  • I wonder why Pvt Owens even joined the Marine Corps if he wanted out so bad. After all, it's a volunteer part of our armed forces. Guess I better watch this from the beginning so I can find out what's going on. I recall seeing most of this as a teenager back in the late 60's or early 70's on local late night TV. Wish I'd paid closer attention this. In any case, THANKS for sharing this fascitinating footage with us! :)

  • those wooden barracks will always be in my head

  • No, the rifle has to be at port arms to make those movements...order arms is when the buttstock of the rifle is on the deck.

  • The wonderful Don Dubbins as Private Owens also appeared in a few Dragnet episodes. He was one of Mr. Webb's proteges. (Protegee if it's distaff).

  • Is it just me or does anyone else think that Gomer Pyle should have been shipped to Southeast Asia after the first four episodes? He should have been in Technical Sgt. Moore's platoon.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • the fleet west pac cruise

  • Hey, Leathernecks: I always wondered why, when the DI tells Owens "Rii-ight face!", Owens

just stands there until the next and last order. Is that position, even while facing the DI, still a right face? Or am I mishearing this?

  • The only time you do movements like right face, left face and about face when the rifle is at order arms. I believe he was at port arms and can't move. He was testing him.

  • Yea. remember the Three Stooges on the drillfield. Every time "right face" was barked, Curly would smack Moe with a rifle barrel.

  • Comment removed

  • @krelllabs Probably because it was in the script? Either way it captures the monemt. Private OWENS is a 23K screrw up.

    SF,

    EB

  • @krelllabs You cannot conduct a "right face" while at "present arms".

  • @krelllabs Owens was given the order "Present Arms". He can not execute any further command until given "Port Arms".

  • he's malingering. My neighbor is a retired Navy Medical Officer, So I got the name.

  • Navy boot camp at Great Lakes operated in the same warm, caring manner.

We ended up in first place, and I made petty officer by fall.

Boot camp is easy if you're young and in shape. I hated every minute of it, but, geez, all you have to do is shut up and do exactly what they tell you.

  • lots a snow , and so cold tires froze to the ground

  • It was a request to go to "sick bay", circa 1966.

  • I know the "Army" has sick call, and the Marines has sick bay. I don't know, which is correct. I was in the Army, and it's "sick call".

  • They both are correct. The Marines go to sick bay for sick call. This was in 1957, went I went to boot camp in 79 it was called sick bay or sick call depending on which Drill Instructor had duty.

  • did owens graduate boot camp?

  • @stevieray09 yes

  • greatest USMC movie ever. inspired me when i was 12 to join and now im 21 and i go to OCS at quantico next summer

  • Magossa:

Upon completion of OCS, rememeber your NCOS and SNCOS. Their experience will be forever invaluable.

  • where can u get this movie?

  • You'll have to order it from Amazon as i did, because it's not sold retail.

  • Damn, I miss Jack Webb !

  • Love the general orders brings back memories of my time at MCRD San Diego

  • Everytime I watch this clip it also brings back memmories of Parris Island and my D.I saying it with more colorful language.

  • That is my favorite part of the movie. It always makes me laugh. Of course I wasn't laughing back then.

  • brings to mind the good old days. glad the air force had only 6 weeks of basic. Tec school gave me a breather 11 weeks but less yelling.

  • I know the feeling, I just recently went to my son's graduation from Marine Corp Boot Camp at Parris Island. The same place I went to boot thirty years ago.

  • the A.C.L.U would launch a lawsuit against jack webb.

  • Perhaps every D.I. that every wore the Eagle, Globe & Anchor? The more you sweat in peace time the less yoy bleed in war.

    Semper Fi,
