I'll never forget the sadness of March 4, 1986. Such a soul who battled demons of which I still cannot imagine. Was fortunate to be at the Memorial Service for him. Richard, you have left us far too soon, but your music lives on!
Always The Band, always Whispering Pines...the haunting call of Levon to Richard ah. To this day this song...this song. Danced to this at my son's wedding. 1 down 2 more to go and they all promised me Whispering Pines.
@dnteatylwsno9 Let me rephrase...I danced WITH my son at his wedding and my daughter and youngest son promised Whispering Pines as well. Momma didn't raise no fools.
@dnteatylwsno9 I too miss him soo much! Glad Levon is still around. I too miss Rick Danko! Robbie,uh, uh although he was, is a great guitar player, he wasnt much of a friend player... Just my thought.
No other rock and roll group, before or since, has exhibited such beauty or intelligence as The Band. Today's so-called bands should just pack it in and become businessmen.
Nice video. What does it take to make a conscious effort to stick around? God damn it millions of people do it every day. Richard you aren't the only one I wanted to more of. thanks for what you gave,
There are few absolutes, I suppose--but this is one of them. An impeccable song of great beauty and even more soul. Thank you Richard for your years with us.
Greatest singer ever... the level of emotion that man's voice could bring cannot possibly be measured. It's a crime that Richard Manuel's not better known.
"If only one star shines/That's just enough to get inside." This is Richard Manuel's highwater mark with The Band. I've been listening to rock'n'roll for nearly 50 years. This is some of the most heartfelt singing I've ever heard. Danko, Robertson, Helm and Hudson got most of the attention, but Manuel was the soul of The Band.
I would be lyin' if I didn't say I was got tear eyed at this. Manuel is a God, there is no question about that. But your video, dare I say, fit the gloom we have over him still to this day. Thanks for sharing this true masterpiece of a song.
This was my and my son’s song at his wedding last year. Not a dry eye in the house.
My favorite song by my favorite band. When Levon joined Richard in a call-and-response duet it has to rate as one of the saddest and loveliest passages in the history of rock.
our soul lives in trees, so much magic in them, so much spritual force in them to be found out for us, humans, lots of healing.
lovely song comes along with this magical video going into my favs, shared with me with my friend Sue. many thanks to both video maker and MY VIDEO GURU AND GREAT FRIEND TRANMERE/SUE. thank you!
I believe The Shape Im In symbolizes Richards darker abusive days but I want to think of him as his amazing self when I hear Whispering Pines, When You Awake and Rockin' Chair.
Thank you for the correction. For some reason I thought it was Richard singing. I love Richard Manuel, another great song with Richard, Rick and Levon is Acadian Driftwood. Of course most songs had all three singing.
God, he makes me ache. There's no one more soulful than Richard. Thank you for this lovely tribute to my favourite male singer. I think Richard would be really touched by it. Absolutely right.
An all time lovely haunting melody played and sung by a true talent now long gone, sadly by his own hand. This songs is indelible in my mind from the first days I ever heard it.
