  • really useful video, thanks for uploading! i have made one attempt at skinning a wood pigeon and i found removing the flesh from the wings very difficult! i botched it a bit but this video should be useful for next time

  • @fusugar The wings are the hardest part on birds, especially on smaller birds. The bigger the bird, the easier the wings are. Bigger birds have a tougher hide than smaller ones too. Good luck with your next bird. Thank you for your compliments too. - Rick

  • can you inject the meat in the wings with either formalin or bird feet preservative?

  • @squirrelkiller247 You can inject the very ends of the wing, but the rest of the meat has to come out. - Rick

  • very nice video! I have one question, when you need to get the meat out of the wing, instead of a knife, can you use a small wire wheel attached to a dremel? should be small enough to get in there, and it would be alot easier.

  • @squirrelkiller247 I don't know if a wire wheel would work. You could try it and see. Let me know... - Rick

  • What is 'Pinny'?

Love your videos so much, I really hope I can find someone like you I can be an apprentice to.

  • @redwolfmoonhowl Pin Feathers are immature feathers. They make it very difficult to mount a bird because they tend to fall out as it dries. Thank you for the compliment. Good luck with your apprenticeship. Email anytime with additional questions. - Rick

  • i just tryed a buffle head and how long to i keep it in borax and then do i just shake it out and dry it then stuff not sure what to do thanks like the show

  • mxr900r:

Right after you put the Borax on it, you can mount it. Just have to shake off excess Borax. - Thanks. Rick

More great videos on my Google site.

  • it dosen't need to sit in borax for a day or something?

  • No. Mount it right after you put the Borax on. - Rick

  • haha! for my beginner project, I took on a full flat skin (except the head)buffalo hide. my fleshing tool was a 5 dollar fillet knife from walmart and that was it. I'll let you know how things worked out when I know myself.

great video Rick! can't wait to give a pheasant hide a go! keep up the good work.

  • That's some beginner's project! Let me know how it works out for you.

Thanks for the compliments. Good luck, too. - Rick

There's more videos on my Google site.

  • If I wanted to use the skin for fly-tying, what should I do to better conserve it after it has been removed from the bird ? Great Video by the way :D.

    All the best, Tudor

  • D: Scrape the fat off. There won't be much. Pay close attention to the tail area. Sprinkle Borax over the flesh side of the hide. Staple or thumb tack around edges to a board, flesh side up. Take a couple days to dry. Should last a long time this way. I enjoy flytying myself, maybe I should get a video out for that. Thanks for the compliments. • excelent video, very instructive

  • sorry probably a stupid question. can't you eat that big chunk of meat that you pulled out of the bird's skin? just wanting to know because we hunt grouse to eat, and i would like to mount one and still have the meat.

  • Yes, you can eat the meat. Just take care when skinning it, don't get any dirt, debris, or shop stuff on it. If the bird is mine, or if a customer wants it, I do keep the meat.

    Thanks. Rick

  • Very nice! ;)

  • It may look like that on camera, but, it really was just an average size bird.

    Thanks. Rick
