You guys have GOT to be kidding me. Andy Richter has NO function on Conan's show. I'm not a big Conan fan so I think I can be a little objective here. Conan O'Brien is better off without a person to play off of. He's just being loyal by keeping him around but I mean C'MON!
@tigerwoods232000 It may seem like that, but a lot of his quips during interviews get huge laughs, he's a big part of a lot of the remote segments filmed on location in various places, and let's not forget that he's one of the writers.
andy richter sucks balls and has zero talent and is unfunny. im a huge conan fan, and i 100% believe the reason the show failed was because of andy richter. he adds nothing to the show, in fact he brings the show down with his fake laughter and taking up space. i wonder what his role even is. he just sits creepily on the couch next to the guests without saying anything which probably creeps them out and its awkwad and pointless. then he randomly and awkwardly stands behind a podium
Ive been a HUGE Coco fan since the very begining when most people thought he sucked when he first started out! I know this interview was a long time ago but it blew me away because Conan holds his tongue where as Andy delved further into the nonesense that occured and further made Leno look like the pure douche bag he really is!! I would say its sad what happened but the new show on TBS seems to be kickin ass!! ... Light House Gravy Boat ass!!! Conan and Andy are incredible!!!
@MadMarSkee both of them are stupid and annoying. yes, i agree shes hot but all these talk show bitches just like to run their mouths loudly about shit they know nothing about as if to annoy the audience and gain added attention for themselves. thats what we call attention whores and they all seem to breed stupidity
You know, a lot of people (even if they didn't watch Jay regularly) would stop by his channel for a the odd monologue or sketch and maybe have a laugh. I will never be caught dead watching anything Jay Leno is related with ever again. Even though it wasn't 100% Jay's fault, he's made it very clear that he hasn't contacted Conan in any way and has no plans to. That's the LEAST you could do in a situation like this. Jay plays the victim and Conan took the high road.
Well, Conan fans, there's a bright side to this. Conan will no longer have to cater to Jay Leno's crowd or even try to. So he is free to go back to experimental comedy sketch Conan of the good old days. Here's to you Cone-sy, and your new home on TBS!
Good God, Kelly is such a bimbo. I'm Swiss, so I don't get the Regis and Kelly show, but I feel I probably do not miss much. All their interviews I've seen so far are horribly embarassing. Oh, and GO ANDY!
I never really thought much of Andy. Always thought of him as Conan's sidekick and some guy who constantly got fired from shows I don't care about. But after watching Andy Richter Controls the Universe and this video clip, I have to say that Andy is a legitimately smart and talented guy. I wish the best for him and hope he gets the recognition he deserves.
@banditr0se I liked him from the start, as Conan's side-kick in the 90's, but I really liked him after watching Andy Richter Controls the Univeese. That was a very funny and clever show, one of those comedies that don't get the respect they deserve.
One of the only sole side-kicks ever...When he was on LN. His only job was to sit next to the host and chit-chat till the guests came out and then a little banter. Only Regis was that on The Joey Bishop Show. I guess Chewy on CL and Guiramo on Kimmel are sort of like that, but they don't sit on the couch. On TTS, Andy picked up another duty as announcer. As well, I personally like Shaffer (most don't) and think he's better than McMahon was...Though not as good as Andy. Eubanks is a turd!

it's not hard to do, but he didn't HAVE to do it. leno certainly didn't pay his writers out of his own pocket during the strike like conan did.

NO...ratings/popularity aren't a reflection of quality. In the "Art" world...it's much easier to get away with lack of talent and still be popular than say...sports. In sports for example, if you suck...you're out. Movies, Music, Art, etc....you still have a shot with poor talent or what is seen by someone as poor talent.
But for ratings, this is show-"BUSINESS" and you need ratings to get money in order to stay on TV...which is a reflection of the audience.
i understand that but for one let's NOT forget the shitty lead in that was a primary cause of the bad ratings. do you think leno would have had a shot if carson decided to have a show on before him? and two, HE NEEDED MORE TIME. letterman beat leno for years before leno gained a lead.
No; if Carson was the lead-in to Jay's show I think people would watch Carson, then go to bed. Carson would be their "fix" for the night. That's something I was asking about if that is what they blame...having two shows of similar entertainment is not good close together.
"Needed more time": unfortunately, we live in a faster world where "more time" is a negative. It means they are losing...and a loss of money. Everything is about NOW NOW NOW. Quick results. People want to run before they crawl. Lots of cocaine I guess. It's also why poor quality is allowed in. Kind of sad.
bottom line, although ratings are important, conan didn't do anything wrong. he did his job. he was hilarious, like he always is. it's the majority of the country who simply can't appreciate anything but lame "comedy" thats pandered down to the lowest common denominator.
ha. i feel like i need to be on a recliner ranting about this.
True, Conan didn't have to pay his people out of his pay-check...no matter how much he got and could afford. It means he is not a greedy prick like some others and understands what is the right thing to do.
Conan was receiving offers from other networks around 2003 or so. NBC didn't want to lose him, and offered him TTS to keep him. I don't know why Leno agreed to step down; I'm assuming he figured he would be ready to retire by then.
Conan had his eyes on Jay's job or at least that time slot which can mean more viewers and more money). NBC didn't want to lose the younger Conan so they gave a little bit of room for Jay to swim a little longer before they asked him to leave the pool. Jay didn't want to but may have felt either he would be ready to leave (like you say and I can of doubt he would be ready given he is workaholic and will go to the end
Well, call me an idealist, but it just really irks me that it IS all about the business. That's actually what frustrates me the most about this whole ordeal: the fact that conan is an infinite amount of times funnier than jay. it should be about THAT, not about how much money NBC can make.
It's subjective on who is funnier to the people. Like I said before, this isn't sports where you can tell who sucks and who doesn't fairly easy. It's very broad in the "Art" world.
Money keeps people in business. Now if someone wants to take less money in order to stay on, that's something to talk about. But remember, Jay and Conan are paid MILLIONS so they would have to take a major pay-cut.
or he just felt it was the right thing to do but was iffy about it and either felt or knew he couldn't say NO. When the time came, he wasn't ready so the need for that job back when lost forced him back in which messed up the plan.
So...all parties are right and wrong on some level I guess...although maybe not Conan since you have to know he was gunning for that time-slot at some point before it's to late.
see, I just don't buy that he couldn't say no. he even made a comment back in novemeber about how he would take the show back if it was offered to him. it's all too fishy to not believe he played a role.
look, i get that the guy changed his mind about retiring. i get that. but thats not what makes it wrong. the classy thing to do would have been to step aside.
i mean, nbc offered letterman TTS when leno wasnt doing good in the ratings, and he said no.
But how did he feel when NBC approached him in the first place while he still had his show and if that is how it played out?
If he wasn't ever approached, what would he have done?
If it was his decision, you would think he would approach them first to tell him he is set to retire.
But maybe he could have said "NO" and told them that he wouldn't be ready by then. Although maybe they just fire him then and there and Conan gets the job.
Who knows. I'm not worried about it. I just thought it was interesting as far as how human choices are made and so on...and how people are viewing it.
Ultimately, of course, it's NBC's fault for prioritizing short term cash flow over the legacy of the best american comedy franchise. But Leno is also a douche because he went back on his word to pass the show on to conan.
a lot of leno fans argue that he didn't do anything wrong, and that given the option, most people would take their job back. they are forgetting that he is not "most people", he is a multi friggin millionaire. that argument is simply not applicable to this specific situation.
Conan and Andy you will always be the best in late night or any time slot, look forward to whatever you decide to create from the heart of rockford,il BC
Fuck that liar Leno. He could have, and should have, walked away but his greed wouldn't let him. He robbed COCO, and I will never watch his shit show again. Go TEAM COCO!!
Conan had over 200 employees. If he divided the $47 million evenly amongst 200 people, that'd be $235,000 per person. However, that's unfair to Conan. 9 months of payroll for over 200 employees adds up and shrinks that $47 million. Doesn't sound too sweet to me.
We could get more information out of Andy if Kelly wasn't such an ego maniac and would STFU to let Andy finish giving insight.
Thanks for posting this video. I was very excited when I saw Glee on last night, until I relized it was re-run :-( but watching it got me back in the mood and I went to watchgleestreamingnow (.) com to see a few more episodes!
I read somewhere that it would cost NBC $150 million to buy out Leno, as opposed to the $47(?) million to buy out Coco. That's NBC, always thinking short-term.
Exactly - everyone sounds like they stutter on this show but realistically it's just the fact that she constantly inserts something into the dialogue.
Fuck all you gay ass emo faggots! All you emo pussys need to man the fuck up and stop crying about bullshit u wrist slitting cry babies! In my school I make it my buisness to give every emo faggot a black eye and make there emo cunt girlfriends suck my cock and then I make them look into my eyes as tears stream down there face ahahahah it makes me cum. I rape those sluts and beat up emo pussys cuz I can and no1 can stop me! All you emo faggots better not message my profile......OR ELSE!!!!!
All "Network" Tv is just bullshit anyways. Conan Should go on some Cable type show like HBO, Comedy Central, or wherever. Then watch as those Network morons loss even more ratings. Good Luck Conana and Andy!!
I feel sorry for conan but he is well known he shouldnt have much of a prob getting a job but all those poor people that are in the background with no connections
My favorite thing about The Tonight Show was Andy returning. I sure hope he continues on with Conan in the future. They were just meant to work together. I love you, Andy!
Man NBC & Leno are punk bitches for screwing over Conan & everybody related to the show. When Conan comes back on the air, I'm going to watch him so Leno could fail.
its definitely not leno's fault. not like he has decision or anything that affects numerous people's lives. his 800 cars are MUCH more important than conan's kids, andy's kids, or everyone on the staff that moved from new york
@paularichards05 it's not actually Leno's fault for not having an agent like everyone else? It's not his fault for saying that he would take the show ONLY if Conan approves the time change, but since Conan didn't approve, he still took the show? It's not Leno's fault that he didn't take a severance package to support his crew?
Sad thing is Leno is fkin shite, whereas Conan is pretty great. Been falling asleep over the washed up wank Leno tries to pass over as jokes numerous times. Get the turd off the air already <.<

uglybadguy16, jay leno is already getting better ratings than conan ever did. both are good guys, but conan just couldn't cut if like jay. why should anyone feel bad for conan... how many tens of millions did he get?
@dlwke2 Well Jay doesn't get tens of millions. More like 4 million Actually Dave beat him on Monday. That was quick.
Jay had bad ratings for 2.5 years and it took him a Hugh Grant interview to overtake Dave. Conan was doing very well in the key 18-49 demo and was building an audience. When Leno had the 10pm show it was a flop and was a terrible lead-in for Conan
Because Leno had a $175 million buyout compared to Conan's 30 million, NBC made the cheapest choice. They're screwed for the future.
For instance: Leno's show already gives you a taste of celebrity interviews so Conan's show, TS, is not as "needed" for that fix for the viewer so the viewer will just go to sleep.
No... every late night show depends on lead-ins, it's a known fact. If CSI gets twice the viewers of the Leno show that's going to affect your ratings. Many people stay with the 11pm news and watch the late night show on the same network.
However Conan's ratings weren't bad. He was still competitive in the key demo. Leno's major flop at 10 killed local news market's ratings. NBC had to cancel him but they did not want to pay his 170 million buyout so Conan got screwed. Leno played victim.
I don't study how ratings work but from a personal stand-point...I'll search what show I want and view it that way. I can care less what's on before or what's on after...I'm just putting on the TV for the show I want to watch.
How did Leno's "major flop at 10" kill local news market ratings?
If you want to watch the news, wouldn't you just watch it???
Is the key to have good shows back to back in order to keep the viewer (who may be tired from a long day at work) up because he is interested in the programming?
If one show is boring...the viewer gets tired and turns the TV off and goes to bed.
Either way...For me, If I want to watch something I'll see what time it is on and then decide if I want to watch it that night. If I'm that interested in the program, I can care less what's on before. I'll do something else until that prorgram is on and when the time approaches, I'll flip on the TV and put on the channel.
Lead-ins would be "helpers" for those that need it, which means; you really aren't gold after all. Youre replaceable.
I watch TV much the same way you do - lead-ins barely matter to me (and with a DVR, the time the show is on barely matters).
What you might be missing in this discussion is that ratings reports show that lead-ins still matter in big numbers. Most people, it seems, would rather not change the channel. Thus, a weak 10pm lead-in to the late local news means you will lose viewers to that news broadcast and the talk show following it.
Still odd to me how the "majority" work. To me it is still about the program. If it's good, I'll watch it despite what's on before. I just won't bother watching the previous program.
It just tells me that these programs really aren't that important at all and yet, somehow, they're getting a lot of attention and are paid MILLIONS to do their job. Damn I need a job like that.
It directly affects ratings. Why for example 2 years ago did ABC put Grey's Anatomy in front of Lost? Because they knew there would be a large carry over of viewers to see Lost the following hour.
Or why did CBS put that CEO reality show on after the Super Bowl, same reason.
Here's the thing: Conan was established to the American public I would say. I rarely watched his show yet I knew who he was. Other shows that need "lead-ins" may not be established because they are "New" to the air-waves so there is a need to get their introduction from their popular friend.
But in the end, the show really isn't that important to the people. If it was, people would find a way to watch it.
I'll be watching a Boxing fight this Saturday Night and most of the people I will be waching it with can care less what fights come on before it. Why? Because they are only interested in one particular fight. The "Lead-in" fights to them are not important. They'll either sit around and just talk if they come early or will show up 10 minutes before the final fight starts.
Now there is a promotional aspect to it all but in the end, you'll need the combination of promotion and talent to be wanted. You end up relying on your performance and not that of others.
People would like a better "card" when they put these shows together for boxing but in the end, you'll still get good numbers if that "Star" is in demand (and he doesn't have to rely on lead-ins).
So yeah...I can see what he is upset. He feels he was rail-roded. That sucks and that's the issue I was interested in with how people are viewing it. Business isn't "clean."
It certainly is a great gig to have. You get paid millions to tell a couple of jokes and talk to celebs.
I'll leave it at that without ripping into the job anymore.
He'll bounce back and he isn't going to miss a meal tonight.
not always true. People knew the local news is always on at 11:00pm but when the 10pm lead in received low ratings, the local news dived 25%-50% around the country. Remember that there are commericals in between the programs that lets you know what type of interesting events they can be expecting following the show that they are watching. And it all affects the shows following. for example if Conan had a guest or musician I like that day I am going to stick around after the news to see it.
These day time audiences have no real sense of humor, very quiet and boring.

bottom line, although ratings are important, conan didn't do anything wrong. he did his job. he was hilarious, like he always is. it's the majority of the country who simply can't appreciate anything but lame "comedy" thats pandered down to the lowest common denominator.
ha. i feel like i need to be on a recliner ranting about this.
PennyLane298 1 year ago
What was the deal from the start?
Did Conan want the T.S. which Jay was doing at the time?
Why did Jay step down?
That's what I'm a bit confused about.
I thought Conan wanted the show and the company basically gave Jay a deadline to end his show to pass on to Conan. Yes, No?
If so...then that's business.
Orangewind 1 year ago
True, Conan didn't have to pay his people out of his pay-check...no matter how much he got and could afford. It means he is not a greedy prick like some others and understands what is the right thing to do.
I'm with you on that.
Orangewind 1 year ago
Conan was receiving offers from other networks around 2003 or so. NBC didn't want to lose him, and offered him TTS to keep him. I don't know why Leno agreed to step down; I'm assuming he figured he would be ready to retire by then.
PennyLane298 1 year ago
So in the end..."It's just business."
Orangewind 1 year ago
Well, call me an idealist, but it just really irks me that it IS all about the business. That's actually what frustrates me the most about this whole ordeal: the fact that conan is an infinite amount of times funnier than jay. it should be about THAT, not about how much money NBC can make.
c'est la vie, i guess.
PennyLane298 1 year ago
It's subjective on who is funnier to the people. Like I said before, this isn't sports where you can tell who sucks and who doesn't fairly easy. It's very broad in the "Art" world.
Money keeps people in business. Now if someone wants to take less money in order to stay on, that's something to talk about. But remember, Jay and Conan are paid MILLIONS so they would have to take a major pay-cut.
Orangewind 1 year ago
or he just felt it was the right thing to do but was iffy about it and either felt or knew he couldn't say NO. When the time came, he wasn't ready so the need for that job back when lost forced him back in which messed up the plan.
So...all parties are right and wrong on some level I guess...although maybe not Conan since you have to know he was gunning for that time-slot at some point before it's to late.
Orangewind 1 year ago
So OK...I can be on Conan's side as far as that. If Jay wanted back in he should have gone to another network.
Orangewind 1 year ago
see, I just don't buy that he couldn't say no. he even made a comment back in novemeber about how he would take the show back if it was offered to him. it's all too fishy to not believe he played a role.
look, i get that the guy changed his mind about retiring. i get that. but thats not what makes it wrong. the classy thing to do would have been to step aside.
i mean, nbc offered letterman TTS when leno wasnt doing good in the ratings, and he said no.
PennyLane298 1 year ago 4
But how did he feel when NBC approached him in the first place while he still had his show and if that is how it played out?
If he wasn't ever approached, what would he have done?
If it was his decision, you would think he would approach them first to tell him he is set to retire.
But maybe he could have said "NO" and told them that he wouldn't be ready by then. Although maybe they just fire him then and there and Conan gets the job.
Orangewind 1 year ago
Who knows. I'm not worried about it. I just thought it was interesting as far as how human choices are made and so on...and how people are viewing it.
Orangewind 1 year ago
Ultimately, of course, it's NBC's fault for prioritizing short term cash flow over the legacy of the best american comedy franchise. But Leno is also a douche because he went back on his word to pass the show on to conan.
a lot of leno fans argue that he didn't do anything wrong, and that given the option, most people would take their job back. they are forgetting that he is not "most people", he is a multi friggin millionaire. that argument is simply not applicable to this specific situation.

@Orangewind they gave leno his own show at 10:00 but eventually bombed

Conan had over 200 employees. If he divided the $47 million evenly amongst 200 people, that'd be $235,000 per person. However, that's unfair to Conan. 9 months of payroll for over 200 employees adds up and shrinks that $47 million. Doesn't sound too sweet to me.
We could get more information out of Andy if Kelly wasn't such an ego maniac and would STFU to let Andy finish giving insight.

its not actually leno's fault he was upset at first too. it was nbc's decision
paularichards05 1 year ago
its definitely not leno's fault. not like he has decision or anything that affects numerous people's lives. his 800 cars are MUCH more important than conan's kids, andy's kids, or everyone on the staff that moved from new york
adob0streak 1 year ago
@paularichards05 it's not actually Leno's fault for not having an agent like everyone else? It's not his fault for saying that he would take the show ONLY if Conan approves the time change, but since Conan didn't approve, he still took the show? It's not Leno's fault that he didn't take a severance package to support his crew?

uglybadguy16, jay leno is already getting better ratings than conan ever did. both are good guys, but conan just couldn't cut if like jay. why should anyone feel bad for conan... how many tens of millions did he get?
dlwke2 1 year ago
@dlwke2 Well Jay doesn't get tens of millions. More like 4 million Actually Dave beat him on Monday. That was quick.
Jay had bad ratings for 2.5 years and it took him a Hugh Grant interview to overtake Dave. Conan was doing very well in the key 18-49 demo and was building an audience. When Leno had the 10pm show it was a flop and was a terrible lead-in for Conan
Because Leno had a $175 million buyout compared to Conan's 30 million, NBC made the cheapest choice. They're screwed for the future.
goodbadugly16 1 year ago 11
"Terrible lead-in"
So does that mean that Conan would owe his ratings to shows prior to his?
Is it supposed to keep the person up long enough to watch his show?
Not sure how that works...maybe you can explain. That's the only thing I can think of.
Orangewind 1 year ago
Or is it about saturating the show?
For instance: Leno's show already gives you a taste of celebrity interviews so Conan's show, TS, is not as "needed" for that fix for the viewer so the viewer will just go to sleep.
Orangewind 1 year ago
No... every late night show depends on lead-ins, it's a known fact.
Leno played victim.
goodbadugly16 1 year ago 6
Really?
I don't study how ratings work but from a personal stand-point...I'll search what show I want and view it that way. I can care less what's on before or what's on after...I'm just putting on the TV for the show I want to watch.
How did Leno's "major flop at 10" kill local news market ratings?
If you want to watch the news, wouldn't you just watch it???
Why would you care what's on before?
Damn...I'm missing something in this discussion.
Orangewind 1 year ago
Is the key to have good shows back to back in order to keep the viewer (who may be tired from a long day at work) up because he is interested in the programming?
If one show is boring...the viewer gets tired and turns the TV off and goes to bed.
Yes, No...way off.
Orangewind 1 year ago
Either way...For me, If I want to watch something I'll see what time it is on and then decide if I want to watch it that night. If I'm that interested in the program, I can care less what's on before. I'll do something else until that prorgram is on and when the time approaches, I'll flip on the TV and put on the channel.
Lead-ins would be "helpers" for those that need it, which means; you really aren't gold after all. Youre replaceable.

Jay's show was so bad, that people changed the channel and just ended up watching the News on a diffrent channel.
^_^
Hum0ng0us 1 year ago 2
I watch TV much the same way you do - lead-ins barely matter to me (and with a DVR, the time the show is on barely matters).
What you might be missing in this discussion is that ratings reports show that lead-ins still matter in big numbers. Most people, it seems, would rather not change the channel. Thus, a weak 10pm lead-in to the late local news means you will lose viewers to that news broadcast and the talk show following it.
emerpus01 1 year ago
Still odd to me how the "majority" work. To me it is still about the program. If it's good, I'll watch it despite what's on before. I just won't bother watching the previous program.
It just tells me that these programs really aren't that important at all and yet, somehow, they're getting a lot of attention and are paid MILLIONS to do their job. Damn I need a job like that.
Orangewind 1 year ago
@Orangewind
It directly affects ratings. Why for example 2 years ago did ABC put Grey's Anatomy in front of Lost? Because they knew there would be a large carry over of viewers to see Lost the following hour.
Or why did CBS put that CEO reality show on after the Super Bowl, same reason.
goodbadugly16 1 year ago
goodbadugyl16:
Here's the thing: Conan was established to the American public I would say. I rarely watched his show yet I knew who he was. Other shows that need "lead-ins" may not be established because they are "New" to the air-waves so there is a need to get their introduction from their popular friend.
Orangewind 1 year ago

Orangewind 1 year ago
So yeah...I can see what he is upset. He feels he was rail-roded. That sucks and that's the issue I was interested in with how people are viewing it. Business isn't "clean."
It certainly is a great gig to have. You get paid millions to tell a couple of jokes and talk to celebs.
I'll leave it at that without ripping into the job anymore.
He'll bounce back and he isn't going to miss a meal tonight.
Orangewind 1 year ago
not always true.
