@gleader Don Angier is the Soke from the Yanagi ryu. He is the inheritor from the Yoshida family, and the nowadays soke of this incredible style. He only accepts three students in his dojo, and he will have only one inheritor too. The style is preserved by the spirit of the art, and you can't teach it without his authorization. If you don't, you are fired from the dojo and from the Yanagi style. One of the best sensei I saw in my life...
This very same Technique is done in DanZan Ryu Jujutsu in The Shinyo No Maki list. It is called Haya Nawa or Quick Rope Tie. In ancient times in Japan, it was used to Subdue captured prisoners on the battlefield. Soke Angier goes in depth with it as he does in every art. Very good.
Don Angier is a legend. THis video was taken at the BushidoKai Kenkyukai in Ashland Massachusetts in the early 1980's. I trained at this Dojo much later after it moved to a new location, but I own an original VHS copy of this video. And yes..... That is indeed Roland Marteaux!
I gotta be honest, I don't understand this. I just don't see where this would come in useful unless you were a policeman or someone broke into your house. Fending off an attacker is one thing, but why would you want to take someone prisoner?
You have to realise that this is not MMA or Gracie Jujitsu... This is real legitimate 18th Century Samurai Bujitsu. HoJoJitsu was used to restrain prisoners who you could not simply kill. The higher the social status of the prisoner, the more complex the knot. Also, Hojojitsu was used to prepare pisoners for execution. This clip is truly a treasure of closed-door koryu practice.
Many arts have variations of this kind of practice, including systema, and the fillipino/indonesian systems. They use anything from belts, sarongs, or cords. The chinese secret police train in these techniques as well, since they are cheap and low-tech. A man like Soke Angier doesn't care about "trends" in martial arts or whether or not his art is "real world effective" (but it is). His only goal is to pass on faithfully what Yoshida Sensei taught him.
You seem as if you know much on this subject, so let me ask---I would like to put my kids in martial arts, but I would like something that is really aerobic, something to keep them in shape. I recently toured a place and ( I won't say which discipline it was) but the instructors really looked paunchy. I was shocked. Maybe that form focuses more on strength, I don't know. What would you suggest? I would appreciate the help.
I'd say BJJ or Judo, but it also depends on how old the kids are. Judo have been around for a long time, and chances are probably better for finding dedicated and pedagogical teachers for younger kids in Judo. Personally I'm all for BJJ, as I think it have more variation, and is very physical in an all-round way, and also very fun...! Traditional wrestling is also high up (right up on top, I guess...) regarding the all-round physical aspect.
MMA is the way to go man. If you get them into an authentic MMA school, you get the best of all worlds. BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, & maximum Conditioning. MMA gets you in shape, while simultaneously preparing you for any type of attack in all ranges. you cant go wrong with MMA.
Thanks. From what I have seen, it really does look like will give your body a hell of a work-out. I hope to find something good around here for my son. Also, I'd like to learn the rope trick on this video for when he gets on my nerves heh heh just kidding, he's pretty mellow
Sounds good. also, if you like what you see in this video, you'll love an art called Danzan Ryu Jujutsu. its ubiquitous, and it is along the lines of the stuff on this vid.
Shidare Yanagi ryu is nothing like Danzan ryu. Danzan ryu is a gendai art that I would hardly even classify as jujutsu and Angier Sensei's art is a classical bujutsu. Like comparing apples to oranges.
Danzan Ryu, a Gendai? well let's see, According to the defenition, Gendai means-any martial art founded post Meiji Restoration. Koryu is the opposite. The founder, Seishiro Okazaki founded DZR in 1927. So yes I guess It is a Gendai. But Wait, Yanagi ryu was founded After the Meiji Restoration as well, So...doesn't that make it a Gendai Art also Einstein? Also, If you haven't studied Danzan Ryu, how can you make comparisons? Both Arts Are Great Arts that teach Great Jujutsu. Stop the Negativity
Yes I agree, both are wonderful arts, I have a little experience in both. I definately did not mean to offend at all...not in the least. I am sorry if my tone came across that way. I was mearly stating my opinion in the respect of my experience in both ryuha.
Its no big deal man. I simply stated that DanZan Ryu was along the lines of the vid in that it teaches traditional Jujutsu Techs(among other things). I didnt say it was Yanagi ryu. But still both systems are great both to watch and to do.
My experience in Danzan comes through Bud Estes' line. In my experience I fealt as if I was training in more of a Judo+karate type system and less of a traditional japanese jujutsu system. I was not aware that Danzan had any hojo work or...any classical bukiwaza at all...but, then again I didn't go through the entire curriculum.
Professor Merlin Bud Estes was one of the best to ever put on a Gi,The consummate Technician. Half his forearm was blown off as a kid but that didnt stop him from becoming one of the best martial artist ever. A direct Okazaki student as well.
I am a friend of Soke Don Angier and if he Saw how foolishly you are throwing his good name around he'd throw up a Katana. Martial Arts Are about Growth, Development of Character, And Harmony. You are Seeking to disrupt harmony by disrespectful and incorrect opinions. if Soke Angier And Sensei Okazaki were in the same room, they would be Seeking each other's knowledge, not bickering over which one came 1st, and other such Nonsense..Grow up! Shoshinsha1
Again as I just stated, this was not my intent. I adore Danzan Ryu just as I adore Shidare Yanagi ryu...or what I know of them. I was mearly stating the fact that the 2 ryuha are not comparable to one another. Danzan ryu is definately more suitable for the genbuka, where shidare yanagi ryu I think is more suitable for one who wishes to experience a more classical bushido experience. I sincerely apologize if my tone came across innappropriately.
The techniques are clear and the history interesting. It makes no mention of schools and techniques names or any other information vital for the continuance of this art.
The second installation used 40% content from the first video.
If you soley wish to learn techniques, it helps. But I would rather save up the money and buy proper japanese books on it and learn to translate them.
These videos/dvds are merely catalogs. A brief recording of the waza alone. If you wish to learn the art...continuance thereof or have questions of the ryuha, there is contact information at the end of every video.
Military Arts, includes many skills besides the most common defenses. Don Angier and his students preserves a skill set of a particular Samurai (Military) System. It probably has ancient arts such as sword making, bow and arrow even calligraphy and map making etc...
all i know is he is the shit that is what was told by my instructors
