@videogal247 - we should be so lucky. They don't put our feet into stately homes as umbrella holders. They're not responsible for making a bunch of their fellow species extinct.
We'd need to get pretty ambitious over the next 20 years for gorillas to be 'pretty much human'.
who cares, its a fucking gorilla. there's a shitload of people getting massacred all over Africa, and your sympathys lie with the gorillas? really? im sorry but i have moral obligations to not give crap.
poching and bush meat is the main reason gorillas and other non human primates are becoming endangered. it's 2008 now. if gorillas are in the danger we know they are in they have 2 more yrs to live! help save them!
there are about 2oo western low land gorillas like koko left in this world. and even fewer other types of monkeys. poching and bush meat are the main cause. some places you will fine a gorilla torso without hands, feet or a head. they use the hands and feet to make ash trays. gorillas are dying for that bullshit! its sad
That's incredibly disturbing to read, it reminds me a lot of the japanese boats catching sharks, cutting off their fins, and dropping the rest of the body back in the water, leaving them to bleed to death and drown. What makes it even worse about the gorillas though is that gorillas are so very much like humans; it almost seems like murder more than it does poaching.
you're right! it's animal cruelty. i can understand killing for food. thats nature. but killing for ash trays, thats horrible. we need to do something to help protect these animals. i just dont know what to do! it makes me sad.

if we worked with people to give them a less environmentally-damaging form of income then the world would be a step closer to becoming sustainable. however with a good proportion of the world living in poverty, it's their only option to turn towards environmental destruction just so they can survive. for every dead gorilla you find there may be a family who don't go hungry this week, for every dead shark a poor fisherman who doesn't lose his house. not saying it's ok, just think about the humans
there are 90,000 low land gorillas left and only about 390 mountain gorillas left; just saw it on a david attenborough doco; both types are big time endangered.
I love animals, and hate people like you. Do you really think koko would be happier in the wild? Don't you think she should have a choice? The wild has predators, hunters, low food, etc etc. Where she is right now, what's the hardest thing she has to do, hmm? learn a bit of sign language?
Absolutely amazing. Congratulations to Penny and to all the people who have worked very hard in Koko's signing language skills and the preservation of the gorilas.
"Gorillas could go extinct by the year 2010." Nope

I had no idea gorillas were "hunted" to that extreme... kind of sad considering they're not too far apart from us

I love Koko, she is amazing, I just wish she would be in the wild, where she would be happier. I really do.

There are people hunting out in the wild! she could be hunted out there!! And the reason she's with Penny is b/c her mother abondoned her!
cherryxberry24 3 years ago
That's true, people in the wild hunt animals heartlessly. She may have died if she wasn't taken in.
