I would love to see the electromechanical ones. How old is this technology? Google and wikipedia didn't tell me much about the history.
First I got to know about this technology was some years ago. Every time at 6 in the morning the lamp balast in my aquarium would emit something that sounded like morse code. Really eerie. I investigated and found out that it is just the local power company switching a section of streetlights.
So the wee ripple controllers on most power boards/ fuse stations or near hot water cylinders read this signal pumped down the lines by this machine and turns on or off accordingly?
This equipment is not much different from an old style motor-generator transmission system used for early voice radio transmission in the UK, except it transmits a 1050 Hz ripple over a transmission line through an enormous isolation transformer. The ripple is received by a device connected to a water heater and is used to control it.
What does a reciever for this system look like?

@conoba Excellent question, I make a video of one over the next few days

@conoba Look at my video - kWh meter Schlumberger - where a modern electronic version of the receiver is visible.
I upload a video as soon i find one of the older electromechanical ones in my basement.

@produKtNZ Correct.
There are also solid state versions of these ripple plants.
In certain parts of Auckland a pilot system is also used and has additional control wires going into the meter box.

these 3-phase motors have such an intimidating windup sound... i love it!

@steamboy51 used in a distribution substation.

I think you could get some more ponies out of that thing if you paint some flames on the side.

you should get a motor from an escalator and do a video on starting and running it.
BTW whats this motor here for?
coondogtheman1234 1 year ago
@coondogtheman1234 I'm currently not working with escalators, this is for a ripple plant controlling hotwater signals.

@RODALCO2007 Hi Rodal, I'm fascinated but still a little confused about what this exactly does. Could you explain more or point me to a good website?
SupaMellotron 1 year ago
@SupaMellotron Google under Zellweger ripple plant, there are some reports about the latter.
This equipment is probably 30 years old and used for load shedding over peak demand periods.
