kempo is not a passsive fighting art. To be good daily practice for years is needed. For self defence a cell phone and mace are better. If you have not boxed in twenty years you still hit hard, if you have not been in a Dojo in two years don't fool yourself. When I competed in Kempo twenty years ago I still have my stopwatch timed events, I look at the times and never fool myself.
Seems pretty unlikely that an attacker with a pistol would come so close to you that they'd actually touch your chest with the barrel. The advantage of firearms is that you don't need to be that close. Obviously if you want to practice techniques against firearms you have to assume that the attacker would be very close, but its important to remember how unrealistic that is.
nice to see these techniques again, part of my history. i commend you on your patience with all the critics, like you say, they are teaching tools to be done with as the individual pleases, but important that the root techniques are passed on. best wishes and respect.
Oh, and as for the criticism here, ego runs wild in martial arts, which it shouldn't. If people don't have something nice and constructive to say, they should remember the humility a black belt should have, and keep their comments to themselves.
I do not think you can in case of emergency grab a punch. If someone suggests, then that opponent's arm will not hold but quickly hit past you or even meet. This art of self defense I think is very unrealistic.
I'm sorry.
But techniques were 2-3 then yes but still in the process where I would say that what the are good.
Ever heard of adrenaline? Yes -- Well, these techniques are useless, because fear and adrenaline takes over your body, and you will not be able to function correctly. Learn a self-defense and a fighting style like; Boxing, Kickboxing, Thai Boxing or Muay Thai. End of x
This is absolutely terrible. This would never work if you ever experienced a street fight. Your only fooling yourself. (the gun one was particularly amusing)
oh boy! I had to stop watching about halfway through. The kids not bad, and certainly would need to clean up [eg. some of his mistakes and stances].
Still, It's good to see people taking Kenpo. Unfortunately, there's not ENOUGH old-school Professors, Masters and Grandmasters in enough places to ensure quality is being taught. People have to do the best they have with what's around in the area where you live I suspect.
just need to cleaning up mistakes which still takes a lot of time.
no one ever grabs like that, no one ever stabs like that, no one ever reacts like that and the fact that you couldn't grab his wrist during the live version shows that your technique of hooking your fingers isn't totally perfect, forget about the thumb. never make any part of your body travel toward the knife with the force of a strike dude, I saw no sheild or acceptance of the possibility of repeated stabs. That's just my advice. But maybe this was just the kata of them, in which case cool.
Nice Technique, on broken staff, why do you step forward as your striking the throat, I think it would be more effective if you step back to 4:00 with your right leg increasing the power of the strike, either way is effective. just curious as to why step away going away from the target?
Fantastic vid. I have been looking into Martial Arts for a long time. I have tried a handful of different techniques. This is the one that I am certainly leaning towards. I don't believe there is a "best" style out there. I think you have to find the style that fits you and so far nothing has struck a chord with me like Kenpo.
Sorry, but you mind want to go and get your 'eyes' checked, I spelt Kickboxing correctly, K...I...C...K... So thank-you for agreeing but make sure you re-read what you put and what I put before you upload your comment, thank-you.
OMG, Do not take this video seriously. these guys are amateurs. When fighting against a knife. DO NOT KEEP your hands behind your back like that guy does. I mean seriously, jeez. these guys are doing their martial art a dis-service.
Jiu Jitsu is one of the sub arts in Kempo, at least in Kosho Ryu Kempo.
Kempo is fist law. Natural law. Whatever works is legit. Hanchi Juchnik is an includer, not an excluder. My lineage comes from Mitose, to Chow to Cerio to Crisci. And from Mitose to Eli to Hoe. Also, Mitose to Juchnik. Pretty functional stuff. Some techniques are more useful than others at different times, and some are clearly stylistic exercises. You choose.
And with that Jiu Jitsu was born. Not really, but one of the main reason I wanted learn it was because it didn't seem concerned with the way the execution looked, i.e.; like some awkward orgy, lmao.
You are either doing art (as in martial art) or you are designing self defense techniques (as i n real life, where you don't have half of your capacities working, your legs not answering and your brain trying to put some order in the adrenalin and fear mixture...).
all techiniques demonstrated are all very complicated. When a person is attacked their body goes into fight or flight mode. Most people have trouble dialing 911 when their heart rate increases to 120 beats per minute and they develop tunnel vision. Self defense techniques need to be mass muscle movement not intricate movements where you have to remember what do I do if they grab me with their right hand or whatever.
Thats why you have to PRACTICE, after enough practice of these techniques, the movements are almost involuntary, they become natural responses to these situations. Those who train consistently are better off fighting off an attack than someone who is not prepared. The main thing is to be aware of your surrounding, never let your guard down, expect an attack at any moment, then nobody will be able to sneak up on you. Most thugs arent going to try to jump someone who is aware of their surroundings
Amen to that what you say is true. What we call mass muscle movement or gross moter skills....is what one will use in a fight. the fancy mess of martial arts in modern days. Some stuff is good some is not!! Use what is usefull and discard what is not

No one leaves their arm out there to block/grab either... boxer's jab has capability of reaching target and retracting in less than a second.. the same with a cross, you better not worry about karate blocking nonsense and cover/move and counter at same time....
comments about "critisism keeps you entertained" is cute but I hope you never actually get attacked by an armed subject with intent to kill you with a knife. If you live through it your perception of edged weapon training will change.you will realize that most of what kempo has taught you about knife defense is bullshit.I have studied FMA for over 20 years which certainly addresses edged weapons much more technically, and most of it is even bullshit.I bounce/bodyguard and have been stabbed.
the technique might be sound,,but THAT IS NOT THE POINT. the point is the ATTACK is bullshit. No one is gonna grab your neck with extended arms with both hands... that is just more unrealistic karate bullshit... you better train against a fast rear naked choke... the knife technique is ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT, you arent gonna SEE the knife, your gonna FEEL it....this has been proven time and time again in realistic defensive tactics/combatives doctrine.. you engage an edged weapon unarmed your a fool.
I appreciate your Kempo my friend. It's different from mine, but still obviously Kempo. Your technique is sound and your stances are solid. I feel bad people on here trash your video. People have no idea how much of a hurt Kempo can deliver and they expect us to kill our training partners. They don't realize the power, timing and speed involved when a technique is executed properly. Check out my vids at eithteenelbows. I disabled my comments, because I got tired of people arguing.
I appreciate your comment, It is difficult for others to understand kenpo. Calling it unrealistic or slap art. But I don't worry I have proven it in the ring and in the street. After 28 years of kenpo and MMA training there are not many people who can tell me fairy tales. I also welcome critisism, It keeps me entertained. I will check out your videos. Yours in Kenpo
if somebody REALLY tried to choke you - you WON'T go into that "take a crossover step" bullshit - while you're trying to do that, you'll stumble and fall. If I put you in a headlock - believe me - I'll twist and pull a neck crank so FAST - by the time you even THINK about defending yourself - it'll be all over - I won't stand there with no pressure, with my arm around your neck, so you can do some defensive move on me - this is fairytale.
LOL Dancer is a clasic Kenpo which when properly executed will work just fine. The idea is not to wait for your opponent to wrap his arms around your neck take you down then wrap his legs around your waist start choking you out ..... Then try to get out. But the moment he touches you to react. Plus you dont see the technique for what it really is. A teaching tool. It teaches awareness, complex stances, controlling your balance and your opponents balance, and variations on a common strike.
@hungbangs2 xD u would be pwnd s hard xD if u tryed to choke someone with matial arts skills xD i would love to see u vs a kenpo pro xD lol you would go down so hard
@hungbangs2 Sounds to me like you fight with agression. You catch a calm, focused,Kenpo Martial Artist, and you might be the one that ends up geting your head twisted and pulled FAST.Just saying.
@hungbangs2 Thank you for that comment. Your right, no one is gonna be able to put a cool awesome defense move when the attacker is REALLY going after you. There is no hesitation, and no chance to do moves running through your head. The simplest defenses are the best, such as krav maga or Mixed Martial Arts. Ive taken it for 7 years now, and by the time my attacker gets CLOSE to me im already aware of his intentions. By the time he even has a chance to lift his arms im already disabling him
@EsmaelMajedi My possibly unwanted advice here is that you need to train more in the OS Syllabus. For those who don't know, that's the Oh Shit! Syllabus, consisting of things to do when something you didn't expect happens. Learn escrima for weapons defense.
@hungbangs2 keep believing that....kenpo works well...have used it sadly but a must..he is not even showing you any speed..i can react to you grabbing me so fast and hit you before you have the time to say WTF...
What about a realistic attack? How many people do you know would grab you from behind and stop and wait, or better yet, throw a single attack from too far away and hold it to let someone attempt a "self-defense" technique?
listen to anybody that bashes on a certain type of Martial Arts lets just say this. EVERY form of martial arts out there, from kenpo to muay thai kickboxing to brazilian jiu jitsu are all well effective if u apply the right amount of focus & dedication to it. I know all of this stuff can help in street self defense or else the instructors wouldnt lie to u & say it can. Some methods may be more effective than others but I can tell u this that kenpo is much more effective against street fighting.
All are effective if they are applied to reality. All humans no matter what style react the same way to a real attack. You won't see the attack coming most of the time. It will come when you are least ready to handle it, and there may be more than one attacker, weapons and there will be absolutely no rules. All biting, kicking, spitting, eye gouging, hitting, stabing, scratching, etc will be present. I'm not talking about that UFC crap that is being fed. You won't see the real enemy.
definitely agree. learning martial arts is a great way to gain an advantage on someone in the real world if you're getting attacked. you'll at least stand somewhat of a chance just knowing any form of martial art as opposed to relying on blind fist throwing and whatever else you may try to do.
Once again a martial art can be a very good tool if it doesn't go against reality and uses physics. Although I have seen countless "martial artists" get taken out by people who had no martial arts experience. What they lacked in knowledge, they made up for with sheer aggression. That and the fact that in the real world there are no such things as rules. People who think it is going to be just like in the dojo who practice defense against the "one punch attack" are in a world of hurt.
It also never ceases to amaze me at how many martial artists think they are invulnerable. No one wants to be honest and take "murphy's law" into account. I used to be extremely into the martial arts. I was a second dan and was "invincible". That was taken from me in one single encounter where a knife was involved. I don't believe in the whole "tough guy" mentality. "It is only a matter of time before you are no longer on top of your game and can maintain the position of TOP DOG."
I had six inches of steel stuck in my ribs. I was bleeding all over. My body went into involuntary shock. The last thing I was thinking about was my pride and how I should have beat this nobody. It was actually a very small thought of "I'm dieing...I can't move". A very professional and intelligent comment. It's only a matter of time until your nemesis finds you.
OK grasshopper. How is fantasy world anyway? Watch out for the invisible ninja's, or the bad guys from your xbox. Or is it playstation? Anyways, best of luck.
I'm starting to see why you got 'stuck' now. Let me give you a little bit of advice, next time someone runs their mouth and wants to fight you - just let it go, instead of trying to challenge them. Or try using that thing that sits on your neck. Anyhow, you have a good day. :)
I won't deny this has been fun. You will be happy to know that after the attack, I did a lot of attitude changing. My focus has been on gearing toward street combat. There are no rules, no one to stop the fight, no preparation, no attackers that spoon feed you one attack, stop, and allow you to perform a monster choreographed combination. I've seen martial arts that have done a great job with this, but I've seen a lot that claim to be great, and people have gotten hurt.
as for the choreography part, most people dont understand what they're seeing unfortunately, and take things too literally when these were supposed to be just ideas, not carved in stone.
As far as martial arts go, I was a 2nd dan in karate, a blue belt in Hokuryu ju-jutsu, and a blue belt in aiki-ju-jutsu. Combat systems include Fairburn-Sykes "kill or be killed" (passed both basic course and instructor course) and Israeli military Krav Maga.
can you imagine how nasty a ufc fighter would be if he were allowed to bite and gouge? that would be an awesome combination. i would be very afraid of a ufc fighter on the street because on top of all of his skill he already has he now can stab and spit ext.
I begin Chinese Kenpo Tuesday night. I hope that I made the right decision and pick this up quickly. It's the most impressive form of Martial Arts I've seen yet, but I'm just afraid of knowing absolutely nothing about the art at all.
I've been weight training for a long time and am in great shape, but I have a feeling that Kenpo will be something that I've never experienced before. I simply cannot wait to begin.
This is really educational. Thanks for putting this up. I wasn't sure if I wanted to take Kenpo or Tae Kwon Do. I've just made my decision, so thanks again!
you shouldn't have studied either one... neither one address realistic violent encounters with any viable tactical doctrine. Muay thai is a much better striking method. Jiu-jitsu is far more advanced in its grappling/throwing/joint-locking skill sets etc...
These are standard Chinese Kenpo techniques. Most kenpo schools require you to learn about 25 of these for each belt level, plus 2 katas and all the basics
Thanks; I like to learn Chinese and tracy kenpo too. I've learned dragon kenpo and I should finished my American kenpo training soon. Thank you again!

Haha...you had your ass kicked.

Touched a nerve, mphm? I thought as much. Focus Daniel-San don't let your anger get the best of you.

Me angry? Nope, if anything Ive gotten a good laugh at your expense. XD

I've seen martial arts that have done a great job with this, but I've seen a lot that claim to be great, and people have gotten hurt.
whitt088 2 years ago
as for the choreography part, most people dont understand what they're seeing unfortunately, and take things too literally when these were supposed to be just ideas, not carved in stone.

what martial arts/how do you train for the "street combat" then? This isnt criticism. Im just curious :]

Good luck and farewell.

can you imagine how nasty a ufc fighter would be if he were allowed to bite and gouge? that would be an awesome combination. i would be very afraid of a ufc fighter on the street because on top of all of his skill he already has he now can stab and spit ext.

My pleasure.

you shouldn't have studied either one... neither one address realistic violent encounters with any viable tactical doctrine. Muay thai is a much better striking method. Jiu-jitsu is far more advanced in its grappling/throwing/joint-locking skill sets etc...

Wow, very impressive. What style of kenpo is this? I study american, and I do't reconigze these techniques.
Th1mastermike 4 years ago
These are standard Chinese Kenpo techniques. Most kenpo schools require you to learn about 25 of these for each belt level, plus 2 katas and all the basics
billboericke 4 years ago
Thanks; I like to learn Chinese and tracy kenpo too. I've learned dragon kenpo and I should finished my American kenpo training soon. Thank you again!
