Beautifully performed. Your expression was outstanding and I agree with btown2345 who justified why you did not need a metronome! I am curious how long you've been playing and how long it took you to master this piece. You were superb.
You did very well, though I would strongly recommend using a metronome to keep your tempo constant. Btw, do you have the sheet music for this piano solo, I would love a copy of it :)

Very nicely done. Pay ZERO attention to the criticisms of some of these self proclaimed virtuosos, who BTW I haven't heard of or seen anything they've posted. "The empty cart makes the most noise" comes to mind.
Your slow choice I interpreted as the feel and mood of the presenting artist at the moment of their rendition.
Have you considered auto racing or track instead of art appreciation? Subjectivity and individual artist's renditions and moods don't seem to suit you. Look around YouTube for other pianist's versions of this piece. No two seem to be the same. There must be a reason for that. Maybe your preference for the pace isn't the same as the person's who was bold and talented enough to play and post it perhaps? Just a thought.
in case you haven't noticed, there are usually standards for pieces in tempo, articulation, phrasing, etc. They make sure that you don't play bach like chopin, or mozart like late beethoven, etc.
Also, YOU should check out other videos of PROFESSIONAL pianists playing this on youtube. Just because someone can post a video doesn't mean they know what they're doing! While individual expression makes the magic in a piece, one must keep the objectivity too
In the arena of , "In case you haven't noticed", the person who posted this begins by stating "I'm not a professional player. I hope you like it."
Being a piano major at a university should teach you to read words and not just music. Humility and respect for the humble offerings of other artists-regardless of their level would also be a useful class. okay, i laid it out, told you what i do - i'm a piano major. what credentials do you bring to this discussion? (also, i hope that we both agree that we are arguing all in good fun, i don't mean to offend by anything.)
I think what bugs me most about this video isn't that it isn't technically perfect. Rachmoninov marked this variation Andante Cantabile. Therefore the speed isn't even a matter of personal preference, but following the composer's instructions! I do read words!
Too slow, making it sound choppy and not smooth like it should sound. I'm working on this piece right now and it is taking me some time to perfect. Keep on practicing!
Actually playing it this slow brings out the "flavor" more and since I'm now working on it these days will probably play it this slow myself for some time.
but by asking for a tutorial they are learning to play! then they will become a musician. If modern technology (youtube) is ruining your buisness why not actually do something about instead of bitching at people?
Playing music does not make you a musician in any way shape or form. Real musicians can sit down at something they've never seen before and play it perfectly. Any fool can sit down and play a song. Take chopsticks for example.
while being tied to a score's directions and following them perfectly is a great skill to have...real musicians capture the heart and unleash their feelings and experiences coupled with the score. any fool can sit down and play a song.
Music is emotion and pure heartfelt emotion, I would be one to know that, my only true strength over these years as a pianist has been putting so much emotion into my music.
However in order to be a musician, a true successful one, you need to be able to read everything you can put in front of you.
BUT, there is absolutely NO shame in taking time to work on a piece, as you work on it, you let it gestate inside you, and grow with the piece, making it more meaningful when performed.
Also, imagine trying to play a liszt etude the first time you see it! (or do you even know who liszt was?)

There is a huge difference in performing piece and sight reading perfectly. Sight reading perfectly is perfect technicalitys with the lack of emotion. Okay, I still slightly disagree with the whole definition of musician - i thought it pretty much means "a person who plays or writes music".
My point of playing piano for a decade was not to compete - I love your playing style - the emotions that go in are the most important to me, as I play by ear, and just add my emotions to an otherwise plain piece.
Sorry if my previous comment sounded rude, as I have a high respect for good pianists - not all can play with heartfelt emotion :)
because...you never learnt with lessons? that's why you can't read? your a jazz pianist? O.o because if you're a classical player like the rest of us it's not possible for you not to be able to read music.

really REALLY nicely done! One of my favorites played with passion and grace. You have your own unique touch. Allow me to introduce you to a friend of mine who also posses that inner musical beauty, His name is Anindya. You can find him at InnocentMalin. Thanx for posting this wonderful rhapsody.
and Axanious..even if you studied formally only briefly and didn't become a professional concert pianist..you are LIVING PROOF that MUSICALITY and artistry are as often living in people who have not "trained" much...and often even more than those that have the opportunities to have successful careers. many concert pianists should NEVER have been musicians...while someone like you should have been. that is as high a respect i can give as a much-trained classical pianist to anyone.
I want to suggest something to you: AWAY from the piano , sing to yourself the tune..as closely as you can according to the rythm notated...more flowingly...you will see..things will come together more naturally and fully. good luck! your arrangement is wonderful.
you're very welcome, Axanious..it's is I that is grateful to hear your playing to express your own love for the music. keep up the good work! and allow us to hear more !
hello..although the tempo is a bit slower than normally done...DO NOT GIVE UP playing it and playing with all your feeling and sincerity. THAT is what comes through your video and that is what matters above anything. I am classical pianist and know these works and I appreciate the LOVE for the music that you share.
Axanious - saying that you like 17 and 18 like "one piece" instantly reveals that you FULLY understand the HEART of the music. the 18th is more beautiful BECAUSE it is like a Flower Blooming out of the Thorns or bush or leaves of the 17th . you got THAT exactly right!! try stringing them together from 16th..keep up the good work.
18th variation is my favourite: it gives me goosebumbs each time I hear it! Love th music! I am not a hardcore fan of the classic genre but some pieces are remarquable! I wish I could play piano too.... you are very ggod, how old are you? you seem to have young, but experienced hands!
Hi Dietcola. I'm 21 years old. Actually I think i'm not too much experienced, but I know (as people tell me) one of my strengths is I can play since the heart. Thanks for your words.
tempo was a bit slow overall (you lost the effect that is meant to be conveyed because of it). And rolling chords when not written is often frowned upon. It's one thing to use that technique for interpretive purposes, another for lack of confidence (i.e. it often sounded as if you had trouble hitting all the notes in each chord at the same time).
I think if you worked on those two things you could illustrate your interpretation fully while also being respectful to the composer's intentions.
haaay wow! i really love this music...., i would like to ask about the music sheet hahah but i just read your info above...haay i spent hours tonight looking for the music sheet but still no luck :( poor me.. hey! you played it nicely! i looooooooooove it!!!! :)
your speed is all over the place. The middle section is really too slow really. alot of it was too slow. i have no idea why every one is saying that's a good thing. towards the end it got to a nice speed.
piano needs a tune.
good technique but overall you lacked the range of dynamics this piece needs to sounds to it's full beauty. however you brought out the melody out over the accompniment which is an acclomplishment. obviously you enjoy it. keep it up.
I learnt to play this years ago when I still played the piano. You play it very similarly to the way I did... So many people rush it, and its a beautiful piece when played much slower...
i have the standard Db sheet music of this piece. il be glad to send u a copy. just send me a message. though it may take some time before i can reply.
Excellent. I particularly liked the way you took your time over the piece and didn't play it like you were rushing off to catch a train! It enabled me to savour the notes and harmonies more closely.
Very good, I am playing it too, you play it by sheet? Sometimes, after I will can this song, I will upload here. But I must learn second part, with different left hand.
lun471k2: The REAL name of this is "You Crummy Stank Ho" by Snoop.
Axanious, this is an outstanding interpretation in my view. Of course the tempo is too slow, and the piano is not well miked, but the phrasing, rhythm, and dynamics are great.
You didn't try to get too cute and uppity with things (the way a lot of players do in order to put their "stamp" on it), and it worked out very well. Great job - thanks for the post!
Hi Dr MalPracktiss, this is a comment that I appreciate, especially because I didn't study piano for more than two years, and (for that reason) I'm not a professional player.
what's the real name of that song? Everwhere on Youtube there is a song with that name but EVERY SINGLE VIDEOS ARE DIFFERENT SONGS!!!! I want to hear more videos like this one for this song... this is so nice.
Hi. This es a melody created by Sergei Rachmaninoff by 1940's or 1930's.... This is a fragment from an entire opus called "Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini". In this opus, Rachmaninoff made several variations of the "caprice 24" (A melody created by de Violinist Paganini). The fragment I play in this video is the 18th variation, adapted to a piano solo.
Do you by chance know who did the arrangement because I'm looking for a good adaptation of this piece. The ones I found I don't think compare to how good your version is
Fantástico! gracias para esta versión hermosa de paganini, me ha ayudado mucho a jugarlo yo mismo. ¡Si yo sólo lo podría jugar así como usted, yo sería feliz!
Thank you for your words. My arts is for free. Sometimes, I go to Hotels where there are a piano and I sit there and I play. This is a nice way of loosing stage fright
Have you ever seen Rich haezy play the whole thing.... Utterly fantastic, a very quiet pianist.( in the public sense) But his recordings are unbelievable.
Especially Beethovan.....But this does sound good, and do tune the piano.....Zippo.....
oh my goodness that was truly beautiful, I have a lot hate relationship with classical music but this piece i know very very well and you totally nailed it to perfection it wa like you really understood the mood, the feeling of the piece my heartfelt thanks you are very talented.......I thank you for making my day :)
Gracias.
Very nice, keep up the good work! This version is already superior of the one from The 5 Browns! :)

you're very welcome, Axanious..it's is I that is grateful to hear your playing to express your own love for the music. keep up the good work! and allow us to hear more !
tedly10027 3 years ago
hello..although the tempo is a bit slower than normally done...DO NOT GIVE UP playing it and playing with all your feeling and sincerity. THAT is what comes through your video and that is what matters above anything. I am classical pianist and know these works and I appreciate the LOVE for the music that you share.
Thank you for sharing.
tedly10027 3 years ago
The rest of the peice is so-so. But the 18th variation (an inversion of Paganini's original motif) is pure and quality.
wefasdf23 3 years ago
Well I Like also 17th variation. In fact, I always play it 17th and 18th variations together, as if they were one same song.
But definitely, 18th variation is the most beautiful.
regards
Axanious 3 years ago
Axanious - saying that you like 17 and 18 like "one piece" instantly reveals that you FULLY understand the HEART of the music. the 18th is more beautiful BECAUSE it is like a Flower Blooming out of the Thorns or bush or leaves of the 17th . you got THAT exactly right!! try stringing them together from 16th..keep up the good work.
tedly10027 3 years ago
18th variation is my favourite: it gives me goosebumbs each time I hear it! Love th music! I am not a hardcore fan of the classic genre but some pieces are remarquable! I wish I could play piano too.... you are very ggod, how old are you? you seem to have young, but experienced hands!
dietcola475769472983 3 years ago 2
Hi Dietcola. I'm 21 years old. Actually I think i'm not too much experienced, but I know (as people tell me) one of my strengths is I can play since the heart. Thanks for your words.
Axanious 3 years ago
you play with your heart: that is the important thing:)
continue that way, maestro :)

tempo was a bit slow overall (you lost the effect that is meant to be conveyed because of it).

Bravo Bravo. Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini 18th variation is THE most moving piece of musinc ever written in the history of this planet.

i forgot to mention that you do the phrasing nicely and have a good interpretation of the piece in general. it just needs a little more work.

Thanks. This is an old video, when I just learned this song. Thanks for your words
Axanious 3 years ago
your speed is all over the place. The middle section is really too slow really. alot of it was too slow. i have no idea why every one is saying that's a good thing. towards the end it got to a nice speed.
piano needs a tune.
good technique but overall you lacked the range of dynamics this piece needs to sounds to it's full beauty. however you brought out the melody out over the accompniment which is an acclomplishment. obviously you enjoy it. keep it up.

How rude inconsiderate, and ignorant a comment!
How could you possibly blanket criticize anyone who is unselfishly willing to share his love and joy of music with the public.
I challange you you to this: Play your version; if it is better, I will commend you.
If not, shut up!, and enjoy a beautiful effort by someone who obviously wants to share joy.

I played your video over and over again. Do you know where I can get the sheet music? I would love to try and play this myself.

I learnt to play this years ago when I still played the piano. You play it very similarly to the way I did... So many people rush it, and its a beautiful piece when played much slower...
Really nice performance of it...

i have the standard Db sheet music of this piece. il be glad to send u a copy. just send me a message. though it may take some time before i can reply.
bxespinosa 3 years ago
Excellent. I particularly liked the way you took your time over the piece and didn't play it like you were rushing off to catch a train! It enabled me to savour the notes and harmonies more closely.
Thanks.

DrMalPracktiss 3 years ago
Hi Dr MalPracktiss, this is a comment that I appreciate, especially because I didn't study piano for more than two years, and (for that reason) I'm not a professional player.
Thanks for your words.
Axanious 3 years ago
what's the real name of that song? Everwhere on Youtube there is a song with that name but EVERY SINGLE VIDEOS ARE DIFFERENT SONGS!!!! I want to hear more videos like this one for this song... this is so nice.
lun471k2 3 years ago

The ones I found I don't think compare to how good your version is
purtykitty24 3 years ago
Hi. There are at least four versions in the internet. You can find it in some P2P program like emule, ares...
Axanious 3 years ago
The sheet music version of that piece is in D major whereas the orchestral version is in D flat. I prefer the D flat myself.
kwixotic 3 years ago
This sheet music is in the original note of orchestra version.
Axanious 3 years ago
Is the sheet music available online in that key? I just might get it then because I like D flat more than the version in the D major key.

Gracias.
