Another artist who's cover of this song is one of my favorites is 'Galic Storm'.. Granted they are a more "modernized" Irish group but I like a lot of their songs.. this being one of the ones that I actually downloaded from iTunes.
Thanks again for showing me ur link to ur playlist
@VerickII haha a friend of mine just showed me that version you're talking about, of the Galeic Storm! That's how I got to know this song in the first place. Just a few minutes ago and I'm already an addict! Man, was it fast.. Love the song.
That's cute! When I was a kid,I'd hear Tommy Makem & The Clancy Brothers on records (those came before CDs,kids ;-) ) when I saw my grandmother (she came from Ireland ) . I never heard THIS song though!Very nice!
Anyone who says an Englishman has no rightto sing an Irish folk song has no understanding of of Irish & British folk music, which has a long tradition of borrowing off one another & claiming it as their own.
While this is the most popular version, many different versions were recorded in written word in the late 1800's ranging from as far as the Isle of wight to Scotland by Alice Gomme, under the name, The wind in the book, The traditional Games of England Scotland & Ireland...Pg 387
Quite right. And a lot of English and Irish songs are actually of European origin. Folk music is for everybody. I can never understand people who want to restrict a song to one group of people.
Exactly! I'm a fan of the Orthodox Celts (Serbian Irish folk band) and they've never even BEEN to Ireland. But they do the music justice all the same, and make the genre popular in Eastern Europe. Who'd think it would work there? Goes to show you that this music is timeless. Thanks for all the contributions, sir.
thats so stupid saying, a brit shoud not sing this song! its just like saying, you can only be a scouser to sing a Beatle song or a manc to an Oasis song ect. its stupid an ignorant.
Could further this logic by saying an irish person shouldnt support Liverpool, arsenal, Man utd ect cos they aint from the respected cities, where these clubs are based.
Keep up the good work mate, am a fan of world music and songs like this are for everyone to enjoy!
was replying to the guy that said a brit shouldn't be singing this song. IMO a brit has more right to sing this pretty little ditty than an irishman... and then is it really then a traditional irish song? :)
rite I am really pissed off... this is the worst version i've heard. This piss british accent does not only insult me but hurts the song in general.. and to those who even thought about commenting on this.. van morrisons version is not the best.. Ronnie Drew's version is the best which can be found on the chieftains world wide over album.
Thank you for your constructive criticism, and please accept my apology for insulting you by singing this song. I was under the impression that folk music was for everybody, but obviously I was wrong.
Have you heard my song "YouTube Comments"? I'd be interested to hear your comments on that one.
yes I will have to work out how to do that ray, so that my backing is heard on your vid, but has yet I dont have a clue how to do it. Iv downloaded it to my tube file, its perfect speed for warm-up and practice sessions
i've heard this song sung by the rankins and seen the wiggles dance to this (to avoid snide remarks i work as a nanny and thats why i watch the wiggles)
Pah, bugger the rest of these criticisms. It's an excellent version of the song, and you really have made it your own. It's not quiiiite as good as when my Grandma used to sing it to me, but nothing ever has been since then ;).
Here obviously you failed history in school theres more the a good chance ray has some irish english and or scottish in him if hes from aus every heard of transportation. it happends about 2 or 300 years ago when the king decided to transport the convicts there for creating the country of austrailia
I'm not going to stop singing Irish songs just because I don't have an Irish accent. As an Australian, am I supposed to restrict myself to Australian songs?
If I'm singing them, then they're my songs! Actually folk music belongs to everybody. That's the whole point. I do have a lot of original songs here too. Comments are always welcome. Thank you.
