@Michele95761 It's not just school though. I'm not allowed to drive when I'm off my meds because of ADHD. I become that unaware and easily distracted. I forget things very quickly, I have a hellish time time starting and finishing projects. I'm impulsive and spend a lot of money on things I don't need or even really want in the long run. ADHD has ruined more than one marriage by the way. This isn't just about school, ADHD affects every part of the person's life.

If "there is no gold standard for diagnostics" then it's not real. It's an umbrella label to put unruly kids whose parents failed at raising them not to behave like idiots. It also serves as a consolation for everyone who struggle at school because they think it is boring. They get distracted, don't try hard enough, and then excuse themselves with the label.
These Doctors think they know how to solve ADHD/ADD when they themselves don't have ADHD/ADD and experience the symptoms that I have. I think it's best to replaces these Doctors with Doctors who have ADHD/ADD cause they experienced it and they would understand kids and adults with ADHD/ADD better.

I think pple with ADHD are more of a threat to dishonest people, cus they have many talents. They can be ultra perceptive, rapidly able to process multiple things simultaneously, and carry on multiple conversations at once, while those they are talking to are trying to play catch up. They have great bullsh*t detectors. ADHDers observe many things around them often not aware they process more info than the average person. No wonder they "SEEM" distracted, their brain is working faster.
It is very easy to say it is fiction, when you are not affected. I am a ADD adult, undiagnosed as child. I am not a moron (working as an engineer). I can vouch it is real, exactly as documented. When somebody says they have a headache, if you never had one, you never understand it. You cannot measure its existence. You can then say it is folly. It does not mean it is not there.

I was diagnosed with ADHD, i was always a smart child but it let me down in schools. I was kicked out of 1 and passed 4 exams with no revision. I could never concentrate in Maths, failed math all the time. I take Ritalin before school and now i understand math and now i'm ahead of my classmates compared to before i didn't understand. I'm 18 doing a levels soon.
AD(H)D is real and has been around for a very, very long time. This disorder has been beneficial for our ancestors who hunted and needed the hyperactivity and/or hyperfocus (look it up, only people with this disorder have it) and it stayed in existence throughout the time. While it was beneficial in the past, it isn't much now. They still are very creative, intelligent and passionate people, but most can't bring out their full potential in this demanding society.

This is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. If the people claiming that ADHD "doesn't exist" actually had ADHD or knew someone who did, they would know that it is not an invention of psychiatry. Also, people claiming to have ADHD and still calling it bullshit probably don't really have it or have a mild form of it. My fiance has ADHD and it is very difficult for him to finish tasks, focus on important things, multitask, etc. He might need medication because it affects his life so badly.

But to be a productive student I have to take meds for ADHD. Go tell what you said to half of America for drinking coffee. I have it and I would not call it a "disease". I've struggled my whole life with focus, on even simple tasks. Work, school, relationships, paperwork, book keeping, etc. I am 34 and was diagnosed 5 months ago. All my life I have been told I fail because I don't care enough or I didn't try hard enough or I didn't apply myself. Sometimes that was true... but most of the time it was not! ADD is very real! Medication allows us creative types to exist in a demanding world of taxes and bills.

I was diagnosed with ADHD and put on medication from 18-27 years old. The video from 4:45 on says it all. It most definitely sounds like they're creating a disease but I don't think it's the doctors faults. Dr's like these, like to feel like they're saving the world. @adinahwithkaden Actually, yes. More recent studies are showing that younger use of drugs may normalize brain development. But those studies are new and inconclusive. But the structural abnormalities (in general) are not drug dependent, and the most stark differences are in medication naive ADHD subjects (meaning those who never took medication are more likely to have small structures). my sister was diagnosed with ADHD when we were younger. They put her on Ritalin and other drugs. She would freak out and beat on my sister and I. We would wake up at three in the morning and she would have the whole kitchen apart and cleaning everything. If we tried to stop her she'd cry and throw a fit on the floor. I'm going ti have to say THE DRUGS DON"T WORK.

Thanks for that link. I'm glad we're finally starting to narrow this disorder down. I hate it when people just write off learning disabilities as nothing. I do agree with them that Ritalin is an extremely dangerous drug, but medicine has come a long way in TWELVE YEARS (seriously, a vid from '98?), now we have medicines like Strattera, which doesn't have nearly as many adverse affects as other ADD/ADHD medications.

The DSM-V is just a book that they use to "diagnose" so that doesn't hold any weight with me. Every conceivable behavior cluster could potentially be in the DSM, and designated as a disease. It's as if we suddenly decided that if you were always thirsty, losing weight, and had to pee a lot, you had insulin-dependent diabetes, without any further testing. Yes, I'm sure there are some kids who find school especially boring, but that doesn't mean they have a medical problem.

I can give you over 40+ resources on research showing structural abnormalities in ADHD brains. It IS something you can SEE. ADHD kids have smaller prefrontal lobes, MUCH SMALLER compared to their peers. Same with ADHD adults. And smaller anterior cingulates. And less white matter and a reduction in necessary neurotransmitters. Painful, honestly.

@Lucius133--First, you are mistaken. I work with a professor who specializes in diagnosing ADHD children via MRIs and personality and skill evaluations. Not every child he sees is diagnosed. I know of many others. There are hundreds of journal articles on the big differences in brain sizes between ADHD kids & non-ADHD kids. I'm not using 'pseudo-scientific verbiage'. I'm not spouting stuff I just found in a magazine. This is what I do. Last, I'm a girl, correct your gender-oriented sarcasm.

He uses it with more severe patients to help pinpoint possible problem areas.Plenty of psychiatrists advocate applying neuro-methods to diagnosis. Nothing new. And the APA & DSM are not perfect--they define sexual impotence exactly the same in causes & symptoms for men & women, but anyone could tell you that's ridiculous. It's an evolving system that is slow to change.

It's an arbitrary collection of disorders (everyone alive has at least five of them), which get in the book by a majority vote of the assembled experts. Neither the definition nor the diagnosis of these disorders remotely qualifies as scientific procedure. In light of this, please be careful feeding young kids psychotropic drugs. I'm 31 years old, but I'd sooner drop acid than touch Ritalin. (PS I apologize for my sarcasm below).
@Lucius133 (this is dawgshark) You're right, the diagnosis process is half-hazard. Truthfully, the majority of ADHD cases (about 3-7% of child pop.) are mild, & are better managed w/o medication. I'm a huge advocate for behavioral therapy, with medication added if no other attempts (such as exercise, yoga, intervention, etc.) work. But I don't like that milder cases are used as an excuse to ignore the kids/adults who can barely function. Thank you for the apology, I'm sorry if I got angry.

@James92802 it's not atrophy, meaning that the smaller parts are not from lack of use. The brain works differently than muscles. Every part of the brain is premium real estate--the primary uses you put your brain to will determine a large part of that allocation. But when kids, who are ALWAYS using their brains with every opportunity, have underdeveloped structures, that's a biological abnormality. Not atrophy; ADHD people are actually pretty creative and intelligent. Just inattentive.

As far as it being addictive, I've been taking various ADHD medications about 15 years, and never have I had a 'craving' or 'urge' to take it. In fact, I often get lazy and go for a week without taking it, much to the annoyance of everyone around me. I have never been addicted after all these years.
I was diagnosed, they drugged me, and I lost a shit ton of weight, when I was taken off, I grew to a height of 6'7" from below 5'8" in about 4 years, stimulants in general are bad for the human body, I am by far not a perfect person, I drink caffiene, and eat some pretty bad foods (I'm young and in college), but all imperfections aside, what happened to mainstream hands on learning, I know myself, and that also, everyone is different. stimulants suck, this would be longer, but I'm out of room

Listen with children, they need time and space with teachers who can help them with this special need. medication shuld be last. Two of my children were told they had adhd. I took them to the doc they got the drugs they never took it. The teacher never knew. I told them how not working with your teacher and other classmates will alway cause you trouble. You dont have to do things that are wrong .but you have to do what they say as long as its right. They all told me how good the meds worked lol.

I was born with a chemical imbalance in the brain and discovered at 25 years old. As a child, I wet the bed, had frequent ear infections, somatic pains, excessive tantrums, sleep problems. During Adolescence the tantrums/outburts were not normal . I didn't know how to control my inhibitions as well as others. During adulthood it became uncontrollable until I was diagnosed. My implicit ADHD was never recognized as there was and still is no expertise in my homeland Ireland. ADHD is genuine.
It doesn't matter whether you BELIEVE in it or not....People with ADHD are not "abnormal"...they arent sick...It is not like cancer. It is a classification of certain behaviours. Medication has different effects on everyone. It helps some and some not as much. Alone, medication isnt enough.

I forget things very quickly, I have a hellish time time starting and finishing projects. I'm impulsive and spend a lot of money on things I don't need or even really want in the long run. ADHD has ruined more than one marriage by the way. This isn't just about school, ADHD affects every part of the person's life.

these so-called symptoms are the result of a conscious effort at classifying, and there is nothing "accidental" about being labeled, unlike say, finding a cancerous lesion while x-raying to detect a fracture. Again, there is nothing "accidental" about being labeled with a mental disorder or disease, which is what the one labeling the child or adult is stating-that one are somehow mentally defective!

If "there is no gold standard for diagnostics" then it's not real. It's an umbrella label to put unruly kids whose parents failed at raising them not to behave like idiots. It also serves as a consolation for everyone who struggle at school because they think it is boring. They get distracted, don't try hard enough, and then excuse themselves with the label.

I think pple with ADHD are more of a threat to dishonest people, cus they have many talents. They can be ultra perceptive, rapidly able to process multiple things simultaneously, and carry on multiple conversations at once, while those they are talking to are trying to play catch up. They have great bullsh*t detectors. ADHDers observe many things around them often not aware they process more info than the average person. I was diagnosed with ADHD, i was always a smart child but it let me down in schools. I was kicked out of 1 and passed 4 exams with no revision. I could never concentrate in Maths, failed math all the time. I take Ritalin before school and now i understand math and now i'm ahead of my classmates compared to before i didn't understand. I'm 18 doing a levels soon.

AD(H)D is real and has been around for a very, very long time. This disorder has been beneficial for our ancestors who hunted and needed the hyperactivity and/or hyperfocus (look it up, only people with this disorder have it) and it stayed in existence throughout the time. While it was beneficial in the past, it isn't much now. They still are very creative, intelligent and passionate people, but most can't bring out their full potential in this demanding society.

This is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. If the people claiming that ADHD "doesn't exist" actually had ADHD or knew someone who did, they would know that it is not an invention of psychiatry. Also, people claiming to have ADHD and still calling it bullshit probably don't really have it or have a mild form of it. My fiance has ADHD and it is very difficult for him to finish tasks, focus on important things, multitask, etc. He might need medication because it affects his life so badly.

I have it and I would not call it a "disease". I've struggled my whole life with focus, on even simple tasks. Work, school, relationships, paperwork, book keeping, etc. I am 34 and was diagnosed 5 months ago. All my life I have been told I fail because I don't care enough or I didn't try hard enough or I didn't apply myself. Sometimes that was true... but most of the time it was not! ADD is very real! Medication allows us creative types to exist in a demanding world of taxes and bills.

But the structural abnormalities (in general) are not drug dependent, and the most stark differences are in medication naive ADHD subjects (meaning those who never took medication are more likely to have small structures). my sister was diagnosed with ADHD when we were younger. They put her on Ritalin and other drugs. She would freak out and beat on my sister and I. We would wake up at three in the morning and she would have the whole kitchen apart and cleaning everything. If we tried to stop her she'd cry and throw a fit on the floor. I'm going ti have to say THE DRUGS DON"T WORK.

Thanks for that link. I'm glad we're finally starting to narrow this disorder down. I hate it when people just write off learning disabilities as nothing. I do agree with them that Ritalin is an extremely dangerous drug, but medicine has come a long way in TWELVE YEARS (seriously, a vid from '98?), now we have medicines like Strattera, which doesn't have nearly as many adverse affects as other ADD/ADHD medications.

Lobotomies were stopped when psychiatric medication came out in 1954, seeing that there was a cure for those problems. Psychiatrists didn't perform lobotomies for their enjoyment, customers asked them to, it was part of their job.

The DSM-V is just a book that they use to "diagnose" so that doesn't hold any weight with me. Every conceivable behavior cluster could potentially be in the DSM, and designated as a disease. It's as if we suddenly decided that if you were always thirsty, losing weight, and had to pee a lot, you had insulin-dependent diabetes, without any further testing. Yes, I'm sure there are some kids who find school especially boring, but that doesn't mean they have a medical problem.

it appears there's only one or two doctors who are skeptical, and the subject of this panel is an attempt to a consensus, meaning it's not a panel on adhd per se but one where adhd skeptics and those with doubts about adhd's validity and diagnostic tools would gather.
Also, psychiatry is a sticky subject to begin with.
One last thing, stimulant medication (which those kids who died were not all taking) is the safest and oldest class of drugs in use in medical hsitory.

The socially exigent, that of altering the individual, and thereby altering the social, will not be easy for our disease mongering culture to critically examine. Wow, these comments are the most painful thing I've ever seen. This video is OLD. I am a neuropsych student and specialize in studying ADHD. I can give you over 40+ resources on research showing structural abnormalities in ADHD brains. It IS something you can SEE. ADHD kids have smaller prefrontal lobes, MUCH SMALLER compared to their peers. Same with ADHD adults. And smaller anterior cingulates. And less white matter and a reduction in necessary neurotransmitters. Painful, honestly.

@Lucius133--First, you are mistaken. I work with a professor who specializes in diagnosing ADHD children via MRIs and personality and skill evaluations. Not every child he sees is diagnosed. I know of many others. There are hundreds of journal articles on the big differences in brain sizes between ADHD kids & non-ADHD kids. I'm not using 'pseudo-scientific verbiage'. I'm not spouting stuff I just found in a magazine. This is what I do. Last, I'm a girl, correct your gender-oriented sarcasm.

He uses it with more severe patients to help pinpoint possible problem areas.Plenty of psychiatrists advocate applying neuro-methods to diagnosis. Nothing new. And the APA & DSM are not perfect--they define sexual impotence exactly the same in causes & symptoms for men & women, but anyone could tell you that's ridiculous. It's an evolving system that is slow to change.

It's an arbitrary collection of disorders (everyone alive has at least five of them), which get in the book by a majority vote of the assembled experts. Neither the definition nor the diagnosis of these disorders remotely qualifies as scientific procedure. In light of this, please be careful feeding young kids psychotropic drugs. I'm 31 years old, but I'd sooner drop acid than touch Ritalin. (PS I apologize for my sarcasm below).

@Lucius133 (this is dawgshark) You're right, the diagnosis process is half-hazard. Truthfully, the majority of ADHD cases (about 3-7% of child pop.) are mild, & are better managed w/o medication. I'm a huge advocate for behavioral therapy, with medication added if no other attempts (such as exercise, yoga, intervention, etc.) work. But I don't like that milder cases are used as an excuse to ignore the kids/adults who can barely function. Thank you for the apology, I'm sorry if I got angry.

@James92802 it's not atrophy, meaning that the smaller parts are not from lack of use. The brain works differently than muscles. Every part of the brain is premium real estate--the primary uses you put your brain to will determine a large part of that allocation. But when kids, who are ALWAYS using their brains with every opportunity, have underdeveloped structures, that's a biological abnormality. Not atrophy; ADHD people are actually pretty creative and intelligent. Just inattentive.

As far as it being addictive, I've been taking various ADHD medications about 15 years, and never have I had a 'craving' or 'urge' to take it. In fact, I often get lazy and go for a week without taking it, much to the annoyance of everyone around me. I have never been addicted after all these years.

I was diagnosed, they drugged me, and I lost a shit ton of weight, when I was taken off, I grew to a height of 6'7" from below 5'8" in about 4 years, stimulants in general are bad for the human body, I am by far not a perfect person, I drink caffiene, and eat some pretty bad foods (I'm young and in college), but all imperfections aside, what happened to mainstream hands on learning, I know myself, and that also, everyone is different. stimulants suck, this would be longer, but I'm out of room

you idiots, how old was this? they have done tests which PROVE people with ADHD have a deficiency in Dopamine, a neurotransmitter. they have traced the activity and production of Dopamine, and ADD produce slightly less. if you had ADD, schizophrenia, bi-polar, you would think differently. the medication stimulates the production of dopamine, before you comment learn about what your talking about and stop watching this ancient crap

ADHD in the intellectual sense (which necessarily impacts behavior) is merely a different way in which some people are born to acquire knowledge - that's it. I've had ADHD since childhood and finally figured out and come to understand, by the grace of the Lord, exactly what it is. It's NOT a 'disorder' - only a different way of processing/acquiring knowledge.

Listen with children, they need time and space with teachers who can help them with this special need. medication shuld be last. Also , a.d.h.d. is usualy coupled with learning disabilities, the health organizations should take a lesson from the adults whom are too old to have been diagnosed and hear what they bring to the table.

What gives your word merit ? Read a book . This is so obviously a group trying to prevent the people that need help with THE DISORDER , to not have access. Are they afraid we will take over the world or make it a better place if we can function better. Drs. have allot of responsibility. each one accountable

@perrytheshit adhd exists. i have it and i can recognize the symptoms. there are literally thousands of empirical research studies to show that adhd is a real disorder with a certain prognosis and etiology.
the other side of the argument, the people who say it doesnt exist, have a few circumstantial pieces of evidence and the ramblings of some scientologists

Two of my children were told they had adhd. I took them to the doc they got the drugs they never took it. The teacher never knew. I told them how not working with your teacher and other classmates will alway cause you trouble. You dont have to do things that are wrong .but you have to do what they say as long as its right. They all told me how good the meds worked lol.

This is old info. The only person that can answer this question are Phycologist with ADD. Not Phycologist that don't have ADD. The Phycologist that don't have ADD are just guessing like any human can guess. ADD is real, people. Would you like to call it somthing else? We all know its a disorder and this is the name for it. ADD. Are you following me? If not, you my have to read this over again and again and again and again. By the way there is no way I have ADHD now is there?

people with adhd just have control issues
try for a day of not trying to control the people around you and try not to control yourself. It really reduces the number of thoughts that you have. If you have thought it doesn't mean you have to act on it. You have choices. ALOT of people act on their thoughts and usually act with unnecessary emotions. A thought is just a thought. Accept it and don't act on it if you don't think its appropriate. Simple as that.

I was born with a chemical imbalance in the brain and discovered at 25 years old. As a child, I wet the bed, had frequent ear infections, somatic pains, excessive tantrums, sleep problems. During Adolescence the tantrums/outburts were not normal . I didn't know how to control my inhibitions as well as others. During adulthood it became uncontrollable until I was diagnosed. My implicit ADHD was never recognized as there was and still is no expertise in my homeland Ireland. ADHD is genuine.

It doesn't matter whether you BELIEVE in it or not....People with ADHD are not "abnormal"...they arent sick...It is not like cancer. It is a classification of certain behaviours. Medication has different effects on everyone. It helps some and some not as much. Alone, medication isnt enough.
