I had this surgery back in 1995 in Toronto, Ontario. I wasn't too happy when the doctor had to wash his writing off my face. It really hurt. Oh well. It was a good thing that my mother made me have the surgery. It helped out with my speech and acceptance a little bit.
@LifeIsABigPuzzle Good for you! Jon's surgery really changed him. He loves his smile too, and it helped his speech a lot. I am working with him to post a new video. He is such an inspirational young man. Thanks for watching his video.
I've also done the smile surgery (I have Mobius Syndrome). But mine was a bit different. They didn't take a muscle from my leg. They moved the muscles in my face instead. My youtubechannel is mostly about mobius (and the surgery + recovery) :)
Oh this video is beautifully done. Congratulations. I also had a smile surgery done years ago it was called Temporal sling and was done by Dr. Wainright in Houston, Texas.
i must say,uo are one very special and most beautiful young lad,a true hero and inspiration.you're in my prayers here in the Holy Land.bless you,and may G-d guide in all your endeavors and lead you to success.:)
Wow this video made me bawl my eyes out!! Congrats Jon, and what a beautiful smile you now have. Your such a handsome young man and an inspiration to us all.
Way to go Jon! I had the surgery done in two stages. Stage I in May of 1996, and Stage II done in May of 1998. Dr. Ronald Zuker did mine at Indiana University Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Zuker is truly an Angel!!
Thank you to everyone that has emailed Jon and me. There are many questions that I can answer here for you. Jon's surgery was performed at UMASS Memorial Hospital, Worcester, Massachussetts, USA. Dr. Janice Lalikos learned the procedure and has performed the gracilis muscle transplant a few more times since Jon's operation in 2007. Jon had his first movements about a six weeks after surgery and very quickly had his smile thereafter. He is considering having the procedure on the other side.
