This is BS they had no reason to shoot it down, and not to mention if say China or Korea announced it was going to send a missile into space to shoot down a failed satellite, how do you think our govt. would react?
Anyway, it pissed me off because they had no reason to shoot it, contribute to the space junk (pollution) already in orbit, and not to mention that there are many other ways to bring the satellite down (especially if the truth was exposed/disclosed about what our govt.'s been hiding)
If you will recall, China already has. They shot down a weather satellite. The major differenct between these two tests is that the debris field created by the chinese test will be much more persistent.
We have already demonstrated 12 times in a row we can hit ballistic missiles (see the FM- series). This satellite was a baby seal by comparison... not to mention we have had ASAT missiles since the late 80's capable of taking out satellites 300 miles higher in orbit.
As for the shuttle fragmenting... they had no idea it was going to fragment before it did. And there was no point worrying about it once it did.
It was a Missle test to prove the US's capability that we can shotdown Satellites and incoming ballistic missles. The space shuttle Columbia blew up on re-entry it carried hydrazine fuel but yet Nasa didn't get frantic over it. But now when a spy sat re-enters the atmosphere they go "Oh It's carrying dangerous fuel" if it lands it will hurt people. It's true intent was a missle defense test pure and simple. It's pretty obious
Also, the fuel that was in the satellite is toxic to humans. The government wanted to prevent people from becoming ill once the satellite crashed, so they blew it up instead.
Missle test. Very obvious.

lol, aegis missle. even more expensive than the SM3 since aegis radars are intergraded into the missle.
