As a former drummer I really understand Ringo´s face moves. He just doesn`t hear anything (especially using more cymbals) and this horrible but frequent situation for a drummer. He looks really angry.
But it seems Mal Evans has made loose job preparing the stage. An hangover?
@the13er I think Ringo had a row with the others about this time and he also wasn't happy with his playing during this time. Mal may not have done much of the setup as the mics etc were already in place for the support acts what gets me is the group were so naive (or perhaps humble) when it came to stage setup they should have had much better stage support with their own PA system etc.
@melTorino Their a hell of alot more than a boy band. They arent a boy band. Their a rock and roll group. And the best four musicians to grace this fucking planet.
@awesomeinabox777 well, I would say define "rock and roll" and what does that mean exactly. I think what you have with the Beatles are what manager Brian Epstein called "a great group of lads from Liverpool." who can make alot of money. And they did. Their formation was similar to the Monkees in that they originally had commercial intentions and a lot of their songs were written for them. Now compare that to modern groups like N Sync and The Backstreet Boys and you see the similarities.
@melTorino First a good place to go to for a definition of rock and roll is The Beatles themselves. Second, you don't know what you're talking about. The Beatles did not originally have commercial intentions. They just played rock and roll in the 50s (Berry, Holly, Little Richard) like anyone else who loved that kind music. When they started trying to get record deals, they were turned down repeatedly because their style was no longer in fashion.
@JGuildersleeve Hello. I checked your profile and I see that you are Canadian. Unfortunately I will not be able to provide you with a response at this time.
even exhausted and ground down from touring , The Beatles still were still peerless entertainers and showmen. as evidenced by this footage, the SONGS are still brilliantand speak for themselves. I find this riveting.
Playing in stadiums in those days SUCKED! Look at the Shea concert. The fans are so far away it was a strain just to connect to the audience. The club days were more to their liking. And the sound systems were antiquated-no monitors! But that's the trade-off when the masses pile in to see you. Security was also a MAJOR issue with these guys.
The Beatles were tired- think of their insane touring schedule, lousy transportation, annoying fans, and no breaks or freedom only work. and of course George and Ringo especially had a right to be angry at John and Paul for being stuck up and hogs sometimes- great musicians just not the most caring people
The mic clips were probably never tightened down. A piece of duct tape on each one would have taken care of the problem. Up until a few months ago, I played music semi pro for about 20 years and to even think of playing live with out running the amps and drums through the mains is unheard of. Check ou how the mics keep swinging away from the guys LOL. Lennon is actually following his around at the end as it swings away from Paul. And this was one of the top pop events in the world that year. These guys knew how to handle it though, their Hamburg days came in handy. They are all in good voice, that's what counts.
Thanks for posting this. I think they sound raw & tight, considering they have no monitors & the drum-kit isn't even miked up. McCartney could have stopped for 1 minute to fix his mike & nobody uses the Vox Continental on the right. The sound's a bit dead but probably on the night it sounded better than the way's recorded. Harrison could have used some pedal & should have played the 12-string on Nowhere Man too. Amazing that they toured without their own PA
By this time the guys were sick of concerts. They loved the music but it was becoming a drudge. Think that a year later they came out with Sgt. Pepper! The medium had to change for them to bring the music forward and the technical problems of the day can be heard here. Imagine them now with all the modern shit, they'd be awesome.
I think they sound great for a bunch of guys on stage with a drum kit and three guitars, no backups, relying on a bunch of primitive speakers behind them, singing everything themselves. But I suppose today's audience thinks Britney Spears is the gold standard LOL.
Remember, Peter Brown says in his wonderful book The Love You Make, the band really enjoyed their time in Japan. They found the Japanese people to be charming and the audiences much more polite than their other fans around the world. It was one highlight on that terrible Summer of 1966 tour. Terrible in the sense that they had so many problems in an administrative and publicity sense.
true, but he also was the only one to still consider the beatles a "band" throughout their career when the other 3 were looking at it as their own music.
wow that's primitive. Obviously a great band, but no PA, no monitoring, no crew, microphones flying all over the place, Paul almost getting electrocuted. Not a bad recording considering all that. No wonder they all look like they'd rather be somewhere else.
This is rare great footage , yet I ,get the feelin they could not hear s----while playin live ..and that was quite a feat to pull off in those days They are so polished here its amazing ,to look and compare to acts tooday w/ all the technology at their disposal , most of it should be disposed of....

Amazing! Turning point in the history of human. Humanity becomes one family! And check that out -there's no backliners! The genious Beatles not only all time greatest, but cool -no need of assistants in stage! -Who needs 'em with a team like that.....
They look so tired and warn out. I think they were surprised that they could hear themselves play! The audience in Japan was more refined I guess. I suppose they wanted to hear The Beatles play, too! And since there was no 'sound check' also notice how no one checked that the mic clips were tightened on the mic stands! All wobbly and turning away from them when they were singing! Also, George said he would wave at the audience so they would scream and 'cover up' any mistakes they made!
umm...i like the beatles & george's my fav beat but that george remark was lame & the performance is sloppy:( no wonder why they didnt released any official live albums...live crap....im dissapointed...2 year after that: the who,the doors, the byrds, the stones, cream, john mayall, pink floyd..etc..were making exelent live shows plus live recordings...amazing...different story...yearsssss appart
they are average here...as jfyenney poinetd out....theyre like in slo-motion here....the studio versions are full of harmonies & the vocal range are top notch....theres no energy here....and theres plenty of bootlegs who shows the beatles at that stage playing like that....its pretty sad cause i like the beatles too
Well, one of the many reasons there performances were lacking was because they had NO MONITORS, and severely under powered amplification, plus lots of screaming fans. The Japanese crowd was tame compared to most of there other shows, but still, they had a hard time performing because of those reasons.
umm...ok...but still...i have shitload of bootlegs of cream & the beatles from that year...beats shows were more expensive than cream but still they performed better than the beatles even if the sound sucked...they worked their asses off...same year..1966....but cream had one advantage: no screaming chicks.....apart from all the screaming their shows lacked & shitty sound...well...it was all in place pretty much...vocal & performance wise...so..im not satisfied with beats bootlegs
Yeah, I'm a pretty huge Cream fan myself, I love there 66' stuff, very in your face, hard driving blues. It could have been they were using high powered Marshalls instead. The sad thing is, The Beatles stopped touring just as the music industry was taking huge strides in live amplification
listenin' to fresh cream right now...just awesome....jack's voice...the band...WOW...but have you heard paul butterfield blues band's east west from 1966 too? mike bloomfield was on fire....one of my fav guitar players...MINDBLOWING...a love supreme is awesome too...coltrane's great...elvin jones & mccoy tyner blows my mind...wow...wish i was there..great years :D
I don't think there wasn't a country where girls didn't go nuts over the Beatles then. Even while they're tuning their guitars, there's still the distinct deafening screams in the background
look how tired and bored ringo is..... cause they couldnt afford someone to sound check for them they done it themself as far back as the late 50's when it was the quarrymen and long john and the silver beatles
I agree but it wasn't one of their best performances. I think the more quiet audience made them a little uninspired. This is a good performance but they usually did fantastic performances - orgasmic!
Paul changed lyric "She's a woman" to "Shimauma" at 5:01 and 5:15. "Shimauma" means Zebra in Japanese. But no Japanese fans deteced it. In after years, that fact was come to light by John Lennon.
clearly your wrong direct me to your lennon quotes hes just not singing quite clearly can u understand half the things say kurt cobaine says from nirvana no but but i wouldnt go asumeing hes speaking in another language

Oh my god, you are a total douche bag, the beatles were one of the best live acts ever, why the hell do you think they became so famous so quickly?

they are average here...as jfyenney poinetd out....theyre like in slo-motion here....the studio versions are full of harmonies & the vocal range are top notch....theres no energy here....and theres plenty of bootlegs who shows the beatles at that stage playing like that....its pretty sad cause i like the beatles too
theachtungtree 2 years ago
Well, one of the many reasons there performances were lacking was because they had NO MONITORS, and severely under powered amplification, plus lots of screaming fans. The Japanese crowd was tame compared to most of there other shows, but still, they had a hard time performing because of those reasons.
Bluesmen88 2 years ago
umm...ok...but still...i have shitload of bootlegs of cream & the beatles from that year...beats shows were more expensive than cream but still they performed better than the beatles even if the sound sucked...they worked their asses off...same year..1966....but cream had one advantage: no screaming chicks.....apart from all the screaming their shows lacked & shitty sound...well...it was all in place pretty much...vocal & performance wise...so..im not satisfied with beats bootlegs

Yes indeed, Mike Bloomfield was spectacular along with the other's in the band. Yeah, I'm a huge Coltrane fan as well.

I don't think there wasn't a country where girls didn't go nuts over the Beatles then. Even while they're tuning their guitars, there's still the distinct deafening screams in the background
kirsm 2 years ago
look how tired and bored ringo is..... cause they couldnt afford someone to sound check for them they done it themself as far back as the late 50's when it was the quarrymen and long john and the silver beatles
scotty160 2 years ago

I agree but it wasn't one of their best performances. I think the more quiet audience made them a little uninspired. This is a good performance but they usually did fantastic performances - orgasmic!
msradx 2 years ago
They also didnt bother to rehearse for the 1966 tour, as is evident both here and in the Germany videos.

So cool to see this whole concert uploaded (and in colour!) You only see snippets on Anthology. Thanks! :D

He was saying "She's my woman" at 5:01... or not?
lantherv 2 years ago 3
I'm sure he sings "She's ma woman" at 5:01
BeatlesFan6270 2 years ago 3
Paul changed lyric "She's a woman" to "Shimauma" at 5:01 and 5:15. "Shimauma" means Zebra in Japanese. But no Japanese fans deteced it. In after years, that fact was come to light by John Lennon.
koyoshi 2 years ago
I do not agree with you. He was saying she's a woman and not shimauma.
